Race Wars 2: Byzantium
Version: C3C 1.22
Difficulty: Monarch
World Seed: random
Size: Standard
Barbs: Roaming
Land/water: Pangea!! / 60% water. Normal, Temperate, 4 billion years.
Civ: Scandinavia
Rivals: Random
All Victory conditions are on, Respawn off. Rest defult.

These will be the conditions for all the Race Wars. The only thing that I'll change is the land type (arch/pan/con)

They Byzantium Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire was created by the first Christian Emperor Constantine to leave the wicked and corrupt Romans. Long after Barbarians destroyed Rome, Byzantium survived. Their highest point of prosperty, or golden age, was during the reign of Theordora and Justinian I. They were also the inventor of a potion called Greek Fire, which we still used today in military ops as Napalm. The main use of Greek Fire was naval, where the Byzantium ships, called Dromons would launch the Greek Fire on to enemies ships... and we all know the saying about fire at sea.;) In 1453 the Ottoman Turks assulted and captured the city of Constantinople, triggering the end of the Byzantium Empire... Things shall go slightly differently this time around.

Civs stats:
Traits: Seafaring, Scientific
UU: Dromon, early galley with added offense. Difficult to trigger a GA with this unit, but we can time it much better as well.
Leader: The lovely Theodora.
Starting Techs: Bronze Working and Alphabet. Suggestion of a Philo gambit, with a Great Library possibility.

Current Roster:
Alerum
Bede
BigNHuge
-Oblivion-
ScoutsOut
M60A3TTS
Sir Bugsy

Oh yeah, one final twist... this is Always War Monarch.:p

Here are some photos of 4 saves I generated:

Save #1: Was actually the first one I pulled up. Is a nice spot, and figured I might as well save it.

Save #2: I just saved this because I've never seen so many BGs so close together. Look at 'em all!

RW2_start2.JPG

Save #3: This is my "challenge" one. If we want it a bit rougher, we may want to go with this one. Hoping the Goody Hut pops a settler.

Save #4: Is very close to the first save, but it was the second best one made.

Voting has begun. Anyone up for the "challange" one? No bonus food, but it has Flood Plains. I don't think it's that bad, and besides not having a cow the goody hut may be helpful. Another settler would be nice.;) Do we really need a settler every 4 turns?;)

This should be interesting... I was gonna suggest the ol' Republic Slingshot, until I got to this line:

...hmmm... why not call it "Monarch, Always War" (MAW). Like a great, big shark, ready to devour the AI, with great big, sharp, pointy TEETH! :D

I like the one with BG all over the place... that oughta be fun.

...not so sure a philo gambit is the tickrt, though...

I like MAW!! :)

And the four BG look really spiffy.

Great Balls of Fire!!

Best concert I ever saw/heard was a double bill of Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry at Carngie Hall, had to have been 1968.

I like them both, but I'm afraid they had no concerts around when I was going to them.:( So Brother Bede, was my brief description of the Byz empire meet your approval? Anyone who's name is an obscure monks name must be a history buff.:p

I thought you might... :)

Toss up between one of several Jimmy Buffet concerts... Rush, with John Butcher Axis playing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" during warmup on a left-handed Stratocaster (Moving Pictures tour, ''81)

...speakin' of rock-'n-roll, where's that 'lectric git-fiddle slingin' troubador?

hehehe... alright, I'm going to take that as a yes on the Monarch Always War.;) Warning to all: My only other AW experience is the NOW of SGOTM.

I'd have to say my best concert was Ozzfest '02 or maybe it was Summer Saniturium. Free Tibet in '96 was awesome too... was the closest my generation came to Woodstock.:p

I'm in Alerum. Always war is fun. I have played one regent AW as fun about a month back. Should be pretty tough with Byzantines, with no land UU, on a Pangea

I like start 4, moving settler to the forest square across the river..

I've never played the Byz, but would like to give this one a try. Agree with #2, that would give us a nice power capital to start.

AWM - Sign me up.

Best Concert - Dec 27 1980, Bruce Springsteen, Nassau Colisseum, Long Island.

Edit - the GH won't give us a settler, since we technically have one as we're popping it.

I think I like either #1 moving 1 SE, or #2 settling in place. We don't want to move off the coast. An early curragh as the third build would allow some exploration.

Sign Me up please! :)
AWM sounds like a great time!
I would like either the 1st or 2nd save. As Sir Bugsy stated, the goodie hut would not give us a second settler. If we want AWM, with that second save, we'd have a very nice early unit producer, and quite possibly a Wonder city later on. (For such things as ToE.)

One thing about save #2, the city will be able to produce 15 shields at pop 7, which is a dromon/horse/sword every other turn.

Welcome aboard everyone.:) It looks as if we have a full crew now.

It looks like the save #2 is going to have it. Anyone have any needs on the roster? Anyone want to go first or last? I'll post the save and roster tonight so please give me some input. I don't think we should build a curragh though. Don't know about early contacts in MAW. One thing I've learned is explore as limited an area as possible in always war. We should do it in rings... map out our first ring and go no further... when that's built, map out another ring. We might be able to get 2-3 cities up before contact is even made this way.

Now, I just want to make sure everyone voted on the right one... #2 is the one with all the BGs. If this isn't hte one you want, let me know.

Nah, no objections. Number two will be a powerhouse city. Churning out units left and right. Just like M60 said, a sword/horse/dromon a turn is pretty powerful at this stage of the game.

On the roster situation, i would like to go third or fourth please :)
I might get some fighting done in those turns :D

Since you've no room, I'm might play in parallel, if no one objects... Probably not at the same pace, as I'll be solo.

Are we allowed to trade for techs on initial contact?

Thoughts on initial research priorities? Iron? Warrior code? We're going to have to figure out some way to mount offensives from the early going...

If i could, Id like to go 3rd. Its kinda my lucky spot :)

If we can trade techs on initial contact, consider going min writing, then philo gambit to take MM as free tech. Alphabet we can trade for WC if our first civ contact doesn't have it. Don't think it will take all that long before someone finds us, being on pangea. Writing we should be able to trade for IW once we find someone else after turn 50. If not, certainly philo by turn 65ish. MM thru the philo gambit gives us dromons. Then we have our off-shore fire support team. Or if you don't want dromons, we could take IW as free tech, but would not be my first choice.

I think the more important question in regards to research is: should we try for the Great Library? I'm thinking that we should. Maybe a Philo slingshot to lit.

If we go with start number 2, We will want to get a few cities and then start a pre-build in the capitol.

I think we will want a pretty tight build. Probably no more than 3 tiles apart.

Good luck guys, enjoy :D
