SLEEVELESS

Concept: Nothing up our sleeves. Leave off the standard bag of tricks and play some basic civ.

* We do not execute nfer trades. One tech per turn, maximum, to be acquired via trade.

* We do not build great wonders.

* We do not form armies.

* We do not raze cities. No abandoning, either. (Autoraze of size 1 is OK).

* SGLs disabled.

* We do conduct our own research. At least sometimes.

* No starting worker for us.

* No intentional prebuilding.

* We accept peace any time an AI at war with us offers it.

* No blockades of any kind, unless at war.

* No worker farms.

* No suicide ships.

* No intentional renegging (via any method) on credit payments.

* No "excessive use" of bombardment: artillery SoDs, lethal air. How much is too much? Hard to pin down. We'll regulate this during the game. (Y'all can be a little flexible with this rule, right? The spirit, not the letter, shall govern.)

Civ: England
Map: Standard Pelago 30%
Difficulty: Demigod
Victory: Space or Domination (set to 40% land and 40% pop. If we get to that point, the game is probably already won. If a single AI gets to that point, oh well for us.)

This should not be considered a well-polished variant, but only an exploration.

Checking in. Can't wait to see how this goes.

I still don't really understand what "research - sometimes" means though. I understand that it's a concept more than a rule, but can we clarify that, a least a bit? I mean, do you want to keep the sci slider at, say, 30%? Is the intention that we have to research a couple of techs for ourselves per age?

Checking in

As to research, at Demigod it is entirely feasible to do all our research by ourselves.

OK who broke the upload server? Arrgh.

I played the first ten turns. I have two pics and the save to upload. Trying to upload files (now one at a time? Who's idea was that??) nets a result of it complaining that the file is not uploaded and that I should change the filename and extension to all lower case. Um... yeah. Since the filename and extension are "rbc16-3500bc.zip" I'm wondering what the heck it is smoking. :smoke:

Why do people break things that are working nicely?

I guess I could use some help here. How are things done in this brave new world? Thanks.

The easiest way is to just directly attach to a post, but that will only display the screens if you have only one attachment. So you'd need three posts to attach the zip and show both screenies.

Did you try changing the dash to an underscore in the filename?

EDIT: Are you able to upload the screens? If so, you could just attach the zip and use the img tags for the pics.

Weird. I never have problem with uppercase filenames (extention names I don't know).

I've had it tell me that before, but that was never the problem. I was invariably trying to attach a .bmp or something like that.

Apparently I misread the upload message. :o The "File uploaded successfully" headline is gone, and the first thing I'm reading is instructions about how to use lower case. Missed the word "IF" in there. Oh well. The files DID upload. In fact, I seem to have uploaded three copies of the zip. Sorry about that, Thunderfall. I guess we all have to adapt to changing circumstances. :)

So anyway, not a whole lot takes place on my first ten.

4000BC: We are not allowed to have that worker, so I edit him out of the game in lazy fashion.

I settle on the starting spot and start max research on Ceremonial. I order a warrior.

3750BC: Warrior trains, start a worker. Warrior explores southward.

3500BC: Worker trained, start curraugh.

Looks like an interesting start position.

I have it, and will play in another 10 hours.

Are you going to add "No minimum research" to that list? It seems to fit the idea of using no tricks.

* We do conduct our own research. At least sometimes.

I think it's quire clear that we do sometimes not research. :)

OK, guys, game already started so let's not propose new changes in the rules..

By the way, what is "no worker farms"?

Worker farms are cities built for the express purpose of doing nothing but cranking workers, either for the whole game or a huge chunk of the early game. Instead, we will build workers here and there as we need more, spreading the training duty out across our civ.

FWIW, it's preferred to use the forum attachments system now rather than the file upload server. The Javascripting for the attachments doesn't work very well in Opera (you use that, right?), but it works fine in Firefox, at least for me.

BTW, why no starting worker? That doesn't sound like anything that one would have up their sleeves...?

I still do it the old way with (IMG)...(/IMG) and saves.
