Iron Working is only 15 turns away, at most. If I can convince the Domestic Leader Noldodan that research is currently getting way too few attention, sliderwise, being at only 90% and should be no less than 100%, we might get it in 13 turns, max.

So let's focus on what to research after that.

Options:
1: Masonry - The smart stacking of stone. This allows defensive construction on a city-surrounding wall. It is believed that it can also be used to build a large grain-storage for the entire landmass we are on. Civ-value 4.

2: Alphabet - the calligraphy of pictures on paper. This is very useful for the Domestic department as an aid to city-planning. For the Military to give scouting-orders and ranks and to create designs for pants ( ;) @ Babbler) . For the Foreign Affairs department for putting down on paper the agreements with foreign nations. For the Trade Department for the recording of trades. It can be an expression of culture. Etcetra, etcetra, etcetra... Civ-value 5

3: Horseback riding - If we can tame the great animals to our south and north-east we can go quickly exploring; have a possible new quick unit and they taste good as well ! Civ-value 5

4: Mysticism - Doing strange things for the good of all. Very often the greatest scientific breakthroughs are made by doing something stange. Remeber that my great-great-great-grandfather Riko Meleta smashed 2 stones together after he broke his axe in an effort to sharpen it? That gave us fire. Strange things will benefit us. Civ-value 4.

5: Other - please post

6: Abstain - Anything is fine with me.

The science department advises a speedy research to this tech:

Literature.jpg

Libraries are great places for research and education. The first moment of glory in Science is the construction of Libraries. But this cannot be studied immediately. We need some other techs first; and the one leading to this is Alphabet.

This poll will remain open for 48 hours.

I voted for Mysticism.

Didn't we already poll for the Iron and Monarchy route?

Inn all my roles, with all my officalities, citizen group memberships and the entire spectrum of who I am, I am for Mysticism, as we might shuttle into monarchy.
With monarchy it is easy to round up the rest and build up a military-

A quick path to literature will speed up our research all around. The Great Library will can give us many different techs. I voted for Alphabet.

RM, can you please explain what civ value is all about?
The Civ-Value is the index that shows a comparison of how many beakers are needed to research that tech. Researching a tech with Civ-value 4 requires the dounle amount of beakers compared to a tech with Civ-value 2. It also reflects what the trade-value is.

Of course, these numbers are á prioiri. If a tech is already researched by 1 or more other civs, the price drops.

As you can see from the list (which I have not made, don't blame me for the typo's ;) ) Pottery is always researched quickly, due to its Civ-value of 2, while techs like Construction, Monarchy and Republic always take long. And are highly valued by the AI in trades.

Taking into consideration that Zululand has Mysticism and Alphabet, i'd advise to research for Horseback Riding.

Why? The only other tech we can research right now that is not owned by the AI (Zululand) is Masonry, and it is a base tech for Industrious civilisations. Now, there is a very high probability that we will encounter a industrious civ before we finish researching it.

We can probably trade Iron Working to get both Alphabet and Mysticism. Researching Mysticism ourselves will only lead to a loosing race with the AI (they already have it now, imagine in 15 turns...), and it is the same thing for Alphabet.

I believe that by making a dent in research for either Alphabet or Mysticism, it will become less and less expensive as we deal with the Zulus. Perhaps we could revisit the deal every five turns to see if we could buy it for gold.

And if we decide to go this route, then Mysticism would be the better choice because it would cost us less. Then perhaps we could trade it to Babylon.

FYI, the Trade Department is strongly opposed to trading away Iron Working for any reason, no matter how dire our circumstances.

:thanx: very much Honourable Minister. :) Where can this info be found?

Given that Horseback Riding yields an upgraded horse unit, it should not really be considered as a crutch for Trade.

Masonry, on the other hand... is cheap. We could get Mysticism 3rd if we go 2nd with it, but it might take a litle gold. Alphabet... well...

Hm...

I disagree with your statement Sir Don 3. I believe that if we get Horseback Riding then we should have a monopoly on that tech and should be able to get good returns on it. We could use it to trade for the tchs we need. I believe that we should go for Horseback Riding.

generally best to go for the techs requiring least research early on, namely masonry or mysticism. I'd go for mysticism as the focus is very much on monarchy.

I have got to agree with Sir Donald. The Trade Ministry is strongly opposed to trading away military techs.

It's on my PC, I got it from Chieftess around the beginning of DG3. I wouldn't have a clue where she got it from.

I created it myself.
