People of Japanatica,

We discover Iron Working in 4 turns. If things continue as they are, we will have a monopoly on this tech and would likely regain tech parity with all rivals by trading it to them. However, doing so would also mean giving away a dangerous to tech to our possible foes, which may not be the best idea with 4 nations in close proximity.

So, what do you say? Do we trade it, or do we hold it to our chest and find other ways to gain tech parity?

This poll will be open for 24 hours, or just before the turnchat begins.

This poll is in Y/H/N/A format. ;)

We trade away iron working as soon we have secured 2-3 cities with iron, but not before.

:hmm: am I missing something here...

3 minutes, thats the longest Ive ever seen a poll take to materialize!

we need those iron cities first, then we can trade it

But the AI knows where the Iron is already anyway - refraining from trading it away won't do anything to stop them securing the iron. I say we trade it away when someone else gets it.

One exception - if a civ without contact with other civs wants it and without iron within their borders, why not trade it (unlikely scenario though)

thats not entirely true civman, the computer may "know" where the iron is, but it will not build cities where the iron is until iron working has been flagged as discovered.

aaah thanks Immo - didn't know that. I've had times when I've discovered IW (before AI) and it's popped up around the AI cities, must just be coincidence.

In that case then, don't trade it until we've secured at least one source

we only miss the alternative, secure the iron city before we trade tech, in the poll-

Memo from the Trade Ministry

Those concerned about securing an Iron source before trade should vote NO on this proposal. That should be obvious, but I want to be certain.

EDIT: With the above in mind, the Trade Ministry votes NO on the trading of Iron.

Abstain, public poll.

If we are heading towards the Great Library, don't trade. If it's the monarchy route, go for it. As I favour the GL, I vote no.

Iron Working for Alphabet, Mysticism and perhaps even Masonry (if some civs got it by then).

It's not my strategy to trade only if other civ havs it; it's my strategy to trade when it's beneficial. If we get enough techs for it: yes.

With all due respect, Minister Rik, the Trade Ministry does not wish to be responsible for furnishing our enemies with the knowledge of swords, especially when one of them is Rome(UU is Legionary). Things are cramped enough on our side of the world even without this major concern.

And since our view of the surrounding area will prove inconclusive, we will have no way of telling who has Iron and who doesn't. So any trade partner could use our generous information against us.

I know you are well-intentioned, Rik, and would normally stand alongside you to support such a trade. But we cannot afford to lose this advantage.

Please say NO to trading Iron Working.

With the same amount of due respect, Minister Zoi.

I think it's a bit naief to believe that we can stop other civs, like the Romans in your example, getting technologies. Especially the ones who have their Unique Unit connected to that technology.

The concerns you point out are points that I expected to be pointed out by the Military Department, not by the trade-department. I'd expected the trade-department to be cheerful about all possible trades, Assessing the trade-benefits and costs.

Take my advise, please. Leave the assessment on whether trades are smart "Military-wise" to the Military.

I think the roleplaying can be taken too far, trade can be too trade friendly, science can be too rsearch oriented nad the military can be too singleminded. If we are never to use our military, we can equip them with the best. But for national security, we should hold on iron to the iron city is built, or that certain iron sites are secured. We cannot forget that we are all in the same game, not a series of roleplay sybgames.

It is indeed naive to trade away iron to for example the Romans when there may be a contested map iron between. I think we should delay this poll until next turnchat, when we also can decide on the location of iron. Had we had a stronger and more proactive Domestic department, we could even see coordination between the polls.
Right now, the departments seem to avoid coordination at any cost, for roleplay, "democracy" and personal interest.

Correct me if I'm worng but...

If we wait until another civ has it (as the poll seem to be going), te AI will trade immediately if other civs have something they lack, so we can then not trade to those civs and even if they dont trade it, the value goes down because i) they can get it off an AI. ii) they may have started the research already. Also, we would have started a research we may have got from Iron Working and so further reduce the amount we can get for it. The AI will get iron sources anyway probably as Iron is quite abundant and we cannot take them all so witholding Iron Working only works in the short-term and does more damage to us in the long-term imho.

Well, now that we're going for IW, we might as well trade it. It's about the 5th tech or so that the AI likes to have. We alrady shot ourselves in the foot by heading up that path (little chance of good trades). Might as well make the most of it...
