Science Poll: Continue onto Literature or alter course ?

We are researching Writing and we've voted to go for Literature after that.
But is that still what you want or have new developments made you want to change your vote? You can. A new science poll is here.

Sorry Rik but that's an out of date tech tree ;). We also have Alphabet, Masonry, Mysticism, Horseback Riding and Iron Working.

But anyway as Immortal pointed out earlier the GL is almost useless, but the Pyramids would be better. I saywe go for Monarchy, but if not Monarchy then Republic so we can get a good gpt or less waste.

we need literature for libraries not the great library IMO
 
Rik, Monarchy will still take almost 40 turns whether we have Literature or not. But there is no question that a Monarchy would immediately increase our Science output, as we would reap the benefits of the government the very next turn. Besides, with the uncertainty surrounding our all-to-near neighbors(that actually surround us...), I really do not feel that Libraries are a high priority.

Also keep in mind the Trade opportunities that Monarchy and Poly provide. While everyone else scrambles for the middle of the tech tree, we can make an end run for two techs that will likely secure the bulk of their hard research.

We need libraries and even the Great Library, if we can get the GL we can skip both governments and just let the AI get them for us, or research the one we want and leave the other one be. You also have to remember that we can nab Engerneering without researching to from the scientific civs.
 
Strider, we are a Militaristic/Religious civ. Libraries cost 80 shields to build. We cannot incur that type of production schedule without Monarchy.

And we can gain as many techs thru trading exclusive techs as we could by building the Great Library. But we have to be savvy enough to choose the right path. The Poly/ Monarchy route is the premier example of that path.
 
after literature we should go for monarchy, but i think we should get literature first

If we really wanted Monarchy that tech line should have been the first one we picked, and we should be researching it by now. We have no chance to get Monarchy before someone else, it would be a waste of time and gold to even bother with it. The only tech we can get reasonably is lit, lets get it and use it to our advantage.

And what advantage would that be, exactly? Building the 80 shield Libraries or the 400 shield Great Library? I would much rather have 15-20 Swordsman for that price.

Did I forget to mention that we are surrounded by four civs? Building Libraries now would be a foolhardy move at best, as we should be focusing solely on happiness and defense. The Monarchy path works toward happiness while allowing us to build up our defense without distraction from an as yet unneeded Library as a build option.

Of course were surrounded... were by the ocean... what did you think they'd just leave a big blank spot for us to settle?

Monarchy will help us, but it will do nothing more then gives us more production/food output. We have very few rivers to get any real commercial advantage from switching. The chance of us getting the Hanging Gardens is almost zero, even with a good mathimatical pre-build. So don't even start thinking were going to get it.

We can build up our defense/offense easy enough while building the GL. You have to remember though that we don't even have Iron yet!! An attack is still twenty through thirty turns away! We can be about 15 turns into building the GL (or about half way) by the time we are ready to attack.
 
Vote Poly now. Monarchy will be our only saving grace.

I don't even now how to respond to this Strider. First of all, are we playing the same game? Our immediate area is rich with rivers. :eek:

Secondly, even if we go for Literature, that too would be 20-30 turns away. So we would get Lit just in time to mess up our strategic plans.

Finally, I have a insiders perspective, as I am playing as Japan in the Cage Match. And at Turn 110(update soon! ;) ), donsig and I can tell you that a lot more civs are working on the Great Library(3-4 known civs) than they are Hanging Gardens(zero). :D

The logic is this:

* The AI almost never researchs Literature

* The Monarchy path is one of the most sought out by the AI

* Were closer to literature than Monarchy

Let me re-phrase that, we have very few River Cities to give us any commercial advantage from switching.

It won't mess anything up, most likely it would be our capital building it, which would be to far away from any civilization to make a real advantage.

Online/PBEM- games often turn out much differant than single player.

I strongly disagree.

And a pre-build is a pre-build, no matter how you slice it. Hopefully, we will be able to rent a god city from one of our neighbors to use as a Wonder-builder. :rolleyes:
 
I bet the Romans are going to get monarchy before we do... we have to take into account what the AI will research so we can research what they don't and trade them tech.
