Hail to the Chief -- an Open Succession Game

Think you could do a better job as President than most holders of the office? Here's your chance to try, Civ-style.

Anyone and everyone is encouraged to take a term in office. Each term is 10-turns long (this may get shorter in the later stages of the game). Post an "I've got it", and play your first 10 turns.

ARE YOU BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE 10 TURNS AGO? ---- To get re-elected, you must have a higher approval rating (hit F11 to view) than when you took office. As in real life, this may lead to certain compromises: should you reduce taxes and increase luxuries to get reelected? Hire more entertainers? Pay any price for diamonds, thereby tying the hands of your successor? Start a good war, and ride the war-happiness to a re-election victory? Various American presidents have tried them all, sometimes at the expense of the country's well-being.

TERM LIMITS ---- Only two terms in office; there will be no FDRs :) However, you may play again as a different President after either 1 week or 7 other Presidents have played, whichever comes first.

NAMES ---- Cities should be named after (1) former Presidents (2) other old white guys (3) New ______, where the blanks correspond to a real American city as in New New York. Our capital should be named after the first President. Boats and warships should be named after states or war heroes.

LIMITS ON BEHAVIOR ---- You're the President, you can do nearly whatever you want! Go ahead and break treaties, start wars, reverse your predecessor's policies. Ruin our reputation -- go ahead! If you think that it will improve your standing among the other Presidents, its fair game. However, no exploits, and no ROP-rape, please.

EVALUATION ---- At the end of each of your terms, please post ALL of the information in the Demographics screen (either in text or image format). I will keep track of how each of the values changed over the course of your administration in a sortable database (to have a link added later once there are some values in it). Awards will given at the end to those deserving Presidents that improved the country (or failed to do so) in the various categories.

Game and world specifics:

Civ: America
Map: Standard
Land: Random
Climate: Random
Difficulty: Emperor
Victory: all but Wonder enabled
Barbarians: Random
Other Civs: Random

The start is below -- I took the first one that came up, no lame waiting for the ideal starting position to come up.

I'd like someone else to get us started by playing the first term. If you're interested, go ahead and download the savegame. Good luck!

Since I just made this stuff up, and especially since I'm new around here, suggestions and/or ideas and improvements are MOST welcome.

Here is how I do screen shots.
1. Hit the "Prt Scrn" key to place a screen shot on the PC's clipboard.
2. Open Microsoft Paint.
3. In MS paint, click "Edit" then "Paste". This should put the screen shot into paint.
3. Save the screenshot as a Jpeg. Name it something like "HANDY_SG002_BC3000_02.jpg"
4. At the very bottom of the forum page, click on "Upload File".
5. Browse, attach the file, and click upload to send the .jpg file to the server.
6. When the upload is complete you will see a box that says "upload Confirmation" Click on the link that says "Veiw New Upload Folder 7" This takes you to all the files loaded in chronological order. The file you just loaded will be at the top since it is in last loaded chronological order.
7. Right Click and select "Copy Shortcut".
8. In the forum select "Post a Reply" There are some Icons above the box where you type your reply. Click the box that says "IMG". Paste in the "shortcut" (the pictures URL address) in the box. Make sure the box does not say "http://" two times.
9. When you click "OK" the link should appear in the bottom of your post and look like this with out the quotation marks and extra "*" I put in.
"[*IMG]http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/uploadpic.JPG[/IMG*]"
__________________

If you resize the picture to 750 pixels or less in step 3, you won't have an annoying scroll because the screenshot is too wide.

We're now on upload folder 8

For a hyperlink to the thread from the succession game registration page, just enter this thread. Go to the address bar, highlight the text and copy it. Go to your registration post, and click the hyperlink button. When the first popup shows up, it is whatever you want to call it (like I called the save >>>THE SAVE<<<), and the second popup is where you paste the address of the thread you want to link to.

To post a hyperlink to a save, you upload it like a screenshot and instead of the insert image button, choose the hyperlink button. Hope this makes sense :crazyeye:

OK, so I just post a got it and then play the game, right? Well, I got it :)

Oh, interesting start. No fresh water, and mostly desert. To be able to use the cow, you need to be beside the volcano or have a culture expansion (cannot use another city).

We have only 9 sqaures that can produce 2 food before map making. I have no idea how to play this start. I guess ICS with every city we can, the first one going on the hill NE of the cow.

The only question at the start is whether to move the scout or not. I think not.

Well, I shall play now.

Oh, I just looked at the rules in mor edetail. Does the last bloke get another go? I have played the turns, but will not posty if it was his turn again 'cos he has 100% rating.

Wow, this start does look hard. That will make things more interesting :)

Well, nominally rrau should get another term in office, seeing as he has managed to keep the people so happy so far. Gosh, if you start your term with 100% approval guess there's no chance of doing any better! That should even out in a hurry though, I should think.

How about it rrau, are you going to do your second term? If not your turns are okay, if_only.

I'll pass since If_Only has already played

pre turn - 3550 - Oh dear. I shall leave the scout were it is, on the off chance of meeting a purple. Lux rate non-zero when city size 1? Science rate set to 100%, CB in 3 turns. [EDIT] Oh, so it is to do with the variant, oh well.

IBT - My borders expand. I see coast NW of Georgy boys capital. It looks like the land is green and bountifull. I am already thinking of a palice jump, as it is allowd.

Purple AI borders expand. We are next to their capital.

Turn 1 - 3500 - GW to size 2. No extra happiness requd. Still leave scout there

Turn 2 - 3450 - zzz

Turn 3 - 3400 - worker finishes mine, builds road. CB finished in 1 turn, but 2 turns at 90% science. Perfect efficency ;)

IBT - We finish CB. We are 23 turns from alphabet and boats. I think we have to go full science, though we may not save that many turns.

Turn 4 - 3350 - zzz

Turn 5 - 3300 - worker finishes road, goes to mine other sugar

Turn 6 - 3250 - starts mining

Turn 7 - 3200 - starts mining

Turn 8 - 3150 - We finish granery. I leave science on 100% even though we are loosing 1GPT. We may meet purple an get some cash out of them before we run out of money. NExT PLAYER _ DO NOT LOSE OUR GRANERY!!!!!!!!!!!

Set to settler, done in 6 turns.

Turn 9 - 3100 - zzz

Turn 10 - 3050 - finish mine, start road

[edit] I got confused, and put too many here.

SO, who can take on this chanlenge? The big desision is where to put the next city? I think it has to be on the hill next to the cow. This spot can get 3 extra food from the off, and can keep that up to size 3. It is next to the volcano, but I think this has to be done. It is also a bit of a way to the capital, but the distance corruption should not be that bad.

The question is how offen do volcanos go off? It is mostly in the early game, so it could be something to do with the number of years rather than turns. I think it has to be done though, as it is the the only point were you can get decent food.

Oh, and do not forget to reduce the tax rate if you do net get any more money in the next 8 turns.

Good luck, it could be chalenging.

My turns started at 100% approval, and now it is down to 50%. I could do the politicians thing, and put up lux rate just before the election, but I shall let someone else have it.

I hope the play and write up is suitable, it is my fisrt SG.

0 3000BC: zzz

1 2950BC: with no luxuries on our impoverished little island, I sent the worker south
to build mines and roads at the site of the second city, near the cow as if_only
suggested.

2 2900BC: settler completes, he's headed to the cow. GW-settler->warrior

3 2850BC: zzz

4 2800BC: zzz

5 2750BC: GW warrior completes. Yikes, its costing $$$ in support, so though we have $2
left, we're at a 2$ per turn defecit. Science back to 70%. Sending warrior south to
new city. GW warrior->settler, as GW is size 2 and settler completes in 6.

6 2710BC: zzz

7 2670BC: zzz

8 2630BC: start mining the cow.

9 2590BC: hmmmm. Re-election coming up, and I don't see how I'm going to get over 50%
approval. if_only_we_were City is founded at the spot he recommended. With the settler
no longer costing support, I up luxuries to 10%, creating a happy person in GW and
increasing my approval rating. Set if_only to building a Temple, to expand the borders
in the future, but this can be changed. Still 4 turns to Alphabet.

10 2550BC: zzz -- I am re-elected with approval rating 63%. Hooray!

11 2510BC: new settler produced in GW. If only there were a good place to send it!
Sending it to the hills SW of town to create a worker-producing city, won't be good for
too much else. GW settler->warrior. Luxuries reduced back to 0%, since we're losing 1$
per turn after the settler. Still no contact from the purples on the West.

12 2470BC: cow is mined, roading.

13 2390BC: New St. Louis founded, since they have the best record in baseball, set it to
building warrior, to be followed by worker. go to mine the grassland near if_only's worker.

14 2350BC: Alphabet! Finally. Sid claims that we're moderately advanced, but I can't
imagine how. Set science to 80%, Writing in 24. GW completes warrior, builds new warrior.
Seems to me there's room for two more cities on our little island here, one just SE of the
scout, and then one in the desert south of the capital. Send G-dub's warrior to New STL.

15 2310BC: zzz

16 2270BC: GW warrior->settler, sending warrior to prospective new city location near
scout.

17 2230BC: zzz

18 2190BC: shoot, I should have done this earlier. Change if_only from temple to Curragh,
wasting 3 shields. change New STL warrior->worker. Red borders appear on the verdant
happy continent to our NE, that's a problem. No contact.

19 2150BC: Curragh completes (change to temple), sending him E to see new red guys and
see how far they are into that island. Roading.

20 2110BC: zzz science to 90% -- good luck to my successor!

The scout can be disbanded somewhere for some extra shields
Most builds can be switched to harbors when we learn map making
Two more cities can probably be put on the island.

Here is the save

Here is our empire
httc1450.JPG

Edit: Read the variants
The cities have been appropriately renamed; the next leader can rename the curraghs because I forgot how to rename units.
Here are the demographics
httc1450demo.JPG

Looks good Tim, thanks for fixing the city name thing. looks like our life expectancy dropped through my terms and Bentley's, interesting. Who's next?

Ok. I will give this a try. This looks like a little bit more difficult than I am used to since I am just starting to play on emperor level.

Being a canadian, I am not familiar with former american president and war heroes. But reading the rules, I see it never mentionned that they had to be american after all. :nya:

How about having a city called Mitteran City and a boat Charles de Gaule? ;)
