okay here's the hypothetical situation.

I'll use vinegarJoe's Iowa to illustrate perfectly.

a civ builds the ww2 iowa, then a tech comes along that makes the ww2 obsolete but upgrades to the modern Iowa. I dont want the modern one to be buildable, is that possible? Just upgrade to something but be unable to build it singely????

I think it might be possible. You could add it in the editor as an upgrade, but not give it to any civs. Never tried it myself though.

I'm not completely sure, if this is possible. I did something similar once for some tests, but with preplaced units. IIRC you have to mark the unit beeing king unit (look at senoku-scn in C3C).

This has been discussed before. You have to flag the new unit as a King unit... so basically, no regicide games.

Making it unbuildable for all civs doesn't work. Basically, if you make the unit upgradeable to the other one but not allow any civs to build it, the unit cannot be upgraded... think for a moment about the upgrade paths for unique units... you have different UUs upgrading to each other, and it works because each can only be built by one civ... so the computer bypasses all of the ones that X civilization can't upgrade to and goes to the next available unit.

Yep, thats it, if you flag the modern Iowa as a king unit, the AI (and the player) will be able to upgrade to it, but not build it anywhere. The problem is, you'll still be able to build the old iowa because it would only go obsolete if you were able to build the upgraded unit.

Sorry for the huge bump, but could this problem not be over come the following way:

Make the WW2 version require certain improvement to build it. Let's call it a drydock. Then, make the modern version require a tech which also obsoletes the drydock. You discover the tech and can upgrade the unit, but can no longer produce the outdated version.

I realize for a scenario, one can simply preplace things such as battleships, we wish to give unique names to, but with some mods this might be a work around.

Again, sorry for the bump and apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere. I have used this technique in mods where you want a character to appear with a tech later in the tree, but you don't want a whole bunch of units with the same name running around.

I should really doublecheck the editor before posting :crazyeye: And you can't have techs make units obsolete either!

But still, you could have either one (or however many units you want) pre-placed and have it upgrade, OR you could have the autoproduced units upgrade.
