*** GAME STARTED ***

Hi, this is the thread for the new Napoleonic PBEM replacing both Iena and Eylau.

"Arcole" was a famous Napoleonic victory. There should be a bridge there actually !

It is for Conquests, using the MP version of the Napoleonic scenario and the patch 1.22.
So you need to have both Conquests and the patch 1.22 installed on your computer.

Civs will be attributed randomly (with redraw in case players already have that civ in another Napoleonic PBEM).

Austria
England and allies (Italy, Portugal and Netherlands)
France and allies (Denmark)
Ottomans
Prussia
Russia
Spain
Sweden AI

Players : 7 (Sweden is played by AI).

1. Akots - France
2. Sega Fanatic -Austria
3. Random fan - England
4. Rcoutme - Russia
5. Romeothemonk - Ottomans
6. Gnarfflinger - Spain
7. Portuga - Prussia
8. AI : Sweden

You want to be in ? You have further questions ? Post in this thread or send me a PM. If ready to join, send me a PM with your e-mail.

Organization : the game will be called "Arcole" to be recognizable and when you get the game, send a mail to inform the sender you got it.

SPECIAL RULES AND OPTIONS

Razing is not allowed since there are no settlers.

Treachery and change of alliances were common during that period (think of Saxony that turned from ally to opponent to Napoleon within the very battle of Leipzig) so an active diplo and alliance breaking should not be considered evil in this PBEM (as a victim you can still be unhappy and complain though) !

Both Prussia and Spain will have the possibility to triger a golden age through a victory of their infantry (jaeger, soldado).

o_O Britain... I tend to end up with seafearing civs lately, at first Danes now UK. Don't get me wrong I am pretty happy with my current position, but if Akots wishes to exchange civs (since he was Britain in Eylau) I will be glad to give Napo a chance (since he was my ally in Eylau). By the way what concerns game settings I am for AP and monarch too, though if akots will want to exchange I think I would prefer Regent :)

@ Dazz and Detlef : these were members of two former Napoleonic games who failed because of droppers so we decided to build out of them a team of reliable players only so that they can enjoy a good and fast game without having (normally) any worries. So it was actually filled before being posted...

Altogether I have decided not to accept newbie players in one standard PBEM anymore. I want first to see how they react in a newbie PBEM or as replacement player. That usually shows fairly quickly who is reliable and who is not so the relaible ones can be "incorporated" into the mainstream. No offense meant, just protecting the other fair players by checking a little. And usually an experienced PBEM takes part of it to help a bit and I stick around as would-be replacement if need arises.

@ Dazz : except if you hate WWII Pacific, why don't you join ODT ? This should be a fast and tense game.

I don't like in general accelerated production. It alters balance between build rate of units and research/terrain improvement/unit movement. Your workers do not work faster in aceelerated production neither the units movement is doubled... IMO in this particular game it would greatly benefit Britain since they have the most improved terrain of all the countries at the start.

Regarding difficulty: No preference here, Regent would be fine, Monarch OK as well, Deity might be possible to play, it is all about human players.

@Portuga: Please make sure Prussia and Spain indeed can trigger their Golden Age with their UU, otherwise the game can be very unbalanced if they don't. :)

Finally, regarding civs: I've played Austria (it is tough) and Britain (it is easy), so time to try France.

I would also like to say that even treachery might be considered normal to a certain extent, I'd like the players to stick to their word and keep the formal agreements (treaties). We are not some uncivilized monarchs of early 19th century Europe, we are decent guys or supposed to be after all.

Also, I'd like to have "preserve random seed" option checked, so we can play with "preserve random seed" ON.

Overall, that is some formidable company of decent and hopefully fast players, thanks to Loulong who tries to pull this off. :)

@Loulong : fair enough point ... I too have suffered with inconsistant and unreliable players on other sites although I do have one steady game currently running. That is what attracted me to this site ... the fact there seems to be a good number of steady reliable players here. Still, I guess i'm a newbie to you chaps so, like I said, fair enough.

Which site (and under which nickname) ? in case we can shorten a bit your quarantine ! ;-)

Actually new players are really welcome (I even go fishing for them sometimes) but as far as I am concerned I just want to check them. But Arcole was special anyway since it was a "redo" with already known players. And someone applied for the replacement just before you posted (Pangea)...

So have you tried WWII Pacific ? :-)

Akots: regarding AP, what you're saying makes sense. The reason why I'm in favor of AP is that combat is too random, so if we are able to build more units I guess the result of battles are not as random and don't deviate so much from the statistical mean.
I noticed that the conquest as AP by default, so maybe that's how the scenario was meant to be played. But I never played this conquest before, so I don't have any argument against AP benefiting England :)

"preserve random seed" ON is certainly a good idea.

I'll wait until tomorrow before starting the game, so that other players may give their opinions.

This would leave Prussia a very slim chance of survival :)

IMO, Accelerated Production is mostly used for on-line or LAN games where players have a limited time to finish. This game will be short even without AP, maximum can be 40-50 turns IMO if played well by most players. With AP it might be a mess since a few countries would not get the full benefit of their Golden Age (max 30-35 turns total with AP). And I'm sure, Prussia does not want to go to war with France right away even if it means triggering Golden Age on turn 5 or 6. :)

Darn, I was looking to get into this scenario with some good players! Perhaps I can be Sweden? I haven't tried the scenario before so don't know if that's plausible..

Sweden cannot be played by a human normally. It could be made but it would not change really much the results (Sweden is to small to make a difference) so it would only increase turn length (like me having Egypt in RoR lol !).

But to organize another one in the near future (one month) with reliable players is a possibility (and not just by me) if this one goes as planned (the results of both Iena and Eylau launched together was not up to my expectations so I will wait a bit...).

Oh well. I'll just keep an eye out then.. although if you can easily mod it to include me as Sweden I'd love to give it a shot if that's ok with the others. I just took a look at the scenario and love those units!

I just mean the various infantry.. they look great :)

(btw, did you see I posted your RoR save in the forum thread?)

AP on or off is ok with me. I will actually do far better with it on since most of Russia is hopelessly corrupt, but AP allows very rapid research which may be unbalancing.

I'm hearing that Ap is not a good thing, and I guess it would only really benefit the big guys anyway. I'll vote for off. As for difficulty, I'll go with whatever it starts with...
