Looking for people to join Monarch Trainer (I need training)

It's been suggested to me that in order to progress past Chieftain, it would be a good idea to join a trainer game at Monarch level (in order to learn the game mechanics better). Unfortunately, the person who suggested it is not available for a succession game.

I've started a game (Americans, 7 opponents, Monarch level all victory conditions enabled), and was hoping there were some people who were willing to join it as a trainer. I confess that I used Civ Edit to find a good starting location (this is the actual starting location as it appeared in Civ Edit, I just assigned it), but if those who are more experienced desire to start somewhere else, go ahead and say so.

As far as I'm concerned, as many people who want training can join, but I'd like to get at least 2 people who've beaten Monarchy on a regular basis to join in.

16 October 2004 Here's the current play order:

DocT
tmarcl
geonnyboy
bigfoot
Michaelangelo

Here is the saved game.

Edit: Actually included the save game file

I will not have the time to assign as trainer, but I lurk a lot...
Honestly, for any type of training game it's a pretty bad idea to make a start with the editor. I mean, you know what to expect, no (nasty or nice) surprises, you know the map. Don't think that is helpful.
It's perfectly fine to re-roll the start until it looks decent (better not too good to be true).
Just my 0.02€

I thought about that. But I really didn't feel like spending a half hour waiting for something good to pop up. I figured this way I just select a good starting location and go from there. With my memory, I don't think I'll remember what's where. You'll just have to trust me when I say I've deleted the original edit (ie, only the .sav is left.)

I agree with Doc here. Your goal is obviously to learn how to beat Monarch-level. That goal can be achieved, but it is so much more educational to not know what you're going to get. No-one can truly "unforget" things.

I advise you to not start on an editted world; but to have a SG where no-one knows what is thrown at you. Loosing a game isn't bad and in fact, loosing a SG with partners who can tell you what went wrong is far more educational than winning a game in which some parameters (such as starting location) is made favorable for the human.

Not an "I sign up" BTW, but I am surely willing to give advise. I have beaten Monarchy ;). In fact I've beaten Deity.

Well, this was sort of my idea, based on thread in strategy in tips. If someone good in the editor would make a map that would be challening, in that we may have to fight for some resources, but also allowing to learn some basic concepts, like maybe 4-turn settler factory somewhere in the area, that would be nice.

Tmarcl I have a very good random map for you.
I think it's a good exercise in trading,exploring,
warfare,expanding,diplomacy and main goal victory.

The civ you play are the Dutch (also random).
Large map,wet,warm,60 % water,archipelago.
No respawn and no cultural starting links.
Victory conditions by default.Monarch.C3C 1.22

If you are interested let me know.

I'm still playing this map,so I can't tell
you too much about it,only one thing
I think I'm gonna lose this game.

What version would it be?

EDIT: By "version", I mean like vanilla, PTW, or C3C

I'd be happy to join up.

Oh, and post in the announcement thread as well.

[Edit]
My £0.02 - use a totally random map/start position/Civ?, pulling one up in the editor is kind-of cheating because you already have an idea what the world looks like. By all means keep re-generating until you get something that looks nice, though.

Neil.

Alright, when I get home, I'll do up a random map. I'd like to stick as the Americans, if only because of 1) The free scout (I have trouble with research), and 2) I like Industrious. However, I'm willing to be democratic about it.

How many people do we want playing? So far we've got:

tmarcl
eldar
bedhead

as definites. If anyone else wants in, let me know. Today's Thursday, so applicants will be welcome through Saturday at noon (Pacific time). That gives people close to two more days.

Oh well, haven't played the Americans for ages.
Sign me up for now; I can beat Deity for most of the time.

But I'll take the liberty to drop out from actively playing once the game is in the bag; I'll surely keep lurking + advicing until the end, just don't feel like moving around 150 MAs against opponents with Rifles.

What world size do you want? Standard or large?

Thanks for joining, Doc. I feel comfortable on emperor now, though if I get sandwiched between the Celts and the Persians and I don't have iron I'll lose, sp a higher level 'trainer' was something I was hoping to find. And eldar, I wasn't talking about having one of us use the editor, because I agree that that would be cheating. Occasionally, in a succession game of this type where the object first and foremost is to teach concepts necessary for moving up a skill level, an outsider will come forth and make a map.

@ tmarcl - you've got a great trainer on board with DocT. This is not a sign up but I'll be lurking to see how DocT's methods differ from Bede's (BTW Bede did a great job in Clive1 - see that thread for lots of tips). Good luck. I like efficient workers also. One the things DocT will teach you is not to be so much concerned with research, but with trades. Get mpstat)see utilities thread) if you don't already have it. You're gonna need it...

I'd like to sign up, but my schedule is kinda funky, as I'm away from my home computer (the one with C3C on it) on weekdays.

I really want to improve my game, (I’ve only squeezed out one win on Regent) but I'd hate to keep everyone back if my turn were to ever come mid-week.

Well it depends on what the others think, but I would be flexible with switching spots with you so that you could play on the weekend if need be, geonnyboy.

<delurks>
I would like to sign up. This would be my first SG. I am pretty comfortable playing at Emperor level, but I don't have much experience at levels beyond that. I am currently playing a game as Japan at Diety level (PTW), and it should be a win for me. So I don't really know if that makes me a 'trainee' or a 'trainor', but I wouldn't mind getting some SG experience if you still have a slot open.

Doc: Cool. Welcome aboard. A standard map will be good, so the game isn't too long. I'll start loading one up shortly, and post it either tonight or tomorrow.

Admiral: Mpstat is being downloaded.

Ok. So far we have (in alphabetical order):

bedhead
bigfoot
Doc Tsiolkovski (henceforth referred to as 'Doc', which is much easier to remember how to spell. Sheesh, and I thought mine was hard!)
geonnyboy
tmarcl

That's 5 people. Do we want to hold out for more? Or go ahead and close it before the Saturday date?
