Diety!

Took a mini-vacation and was 3 days without CIV!:( So I started the GOTM in the wee hours this morning. Time sure flies on this level. I'm on 1860 AD already. I managed to kill off the orange people (Carthaginians?) but my old GOTM nemesis (the Celts) were too much.

I was stuck on three cities for a LONG time and had to hide behind my great wall. Before (and after) the great wall I've given the dastardly Celts everything they've asked for. (Just tech so far.) I got to republic (though I had to delay the revolution) then democracy ASAP. Hope to catch up in tech and bankroll some $$$.

Is this another game where I must hang on until I get fundmentalism?

Well, that was quick. The Celts killed me off again! At least I made it to 1925 AD. Fortified phalanx behind city walls do not stand up well against cavalry.:crazyeyes

I gave the Celts everything they wanted (except when I had the Great Wall) and they just pummeled me. No respite. They even rubbed it in by occassionaly send ing an emmisary to tell be we were at war.:p

Well, now I have all month to play Civ III...:)

Yeah, time sure flies on diety. The carthagians were really a pain in the ass this game. They got polytheism and horseback riding early on, so I had some trouble defending myself. I have had a big war with them since I found them 2500 BC.

I am now 380 AD and have just found the Celts. I somehow managed to destroy all of the carthagians cities, except the capital (it has city walls:(). I now have 10 cities, and 2 wonders, 1 in progress. I would have had the colussus if the barbarians hadn't come and taken my city with 150 shields.

I really like this island/continent. There are alot of grassland and specials. There is much unused land that I like to take care of.

I have a little question. I am now in monarchy, and I have only 3 cities with temple and marketplace, and there are a lot of unused land that I want to build cities on. So I wonder, should I go into republic anyway, and skip building cities for a while?

I started out with the plan of Hanging Gardens/expand like crazy but the Carths were in the way.Something had to give....and it did.No more orange.
Had to get involved in war with Celticia when they took Carthage after I had emptyed the defenders.Steal my glory will ya?

Thats where it stands in the late bc years.I cannot see any other cities cept my own.White units coming from the left somewhere....

Ok Celts, you wanted war...IT'S WAR!

I had to stay in monarchy...the celts were too annoying!

I was lucky my third diplomat managed to destroy the Carthage city wall, so I could destroy the city already.

I'd wait. My advice is to fight until your land is clear then go to republic. I went to republic after destroying the orange. Built the Great Wall and the Celts left me alone until metalurgy came. Then they sent cavalry after my phalanxes. It was not a pretty sight.

Yeah, you are probably right. I did wait too, and built myself an army. If I had gone into republic without the michelangelos chapel, it would be hard to control the people.

I am now at 1500 AD, I have 13 cities, 3 wonders, and 6 crusaders close to the celts. The celts also have city walls :(. So I have to wait alot of years before I can even think of an assault.

feels like I am progressing kinda slowly but steadily at least.
I captured the Gardens from the Celts just as I was about to finish it myself. That was kinda nice.I now have nearly 200 sheilds towards the next wonder. Not sure what that will be.Favoring the Lighthouse.I am set up for war with War Academy and knights.Seems logical to establish dominance over the seas as a followup.Plus it can be done in a couple turns to free up my cap again. If this were mp I defintely build the Great Wall now...but its the ai.....with the wall and gardens I could settle whereever I want though.....
Carths are dead.Celts in big trouble.Others..a mystery.

I realise that loads of people will be away playing Civ 3, but I am very disappointed that so few posts have been made about the Civ 2 GOTM. It's been out for a week now yet there have been less than 10 spoiler posts! I haven't got a (working) PC at the moment so I can't play, but it's a shame to see such a fine tradition going to ruin like this. If you're playing it, post about it! :D Please....

I had a really good GOTM 10, but this is going to be different, my first ever Deity levl game:eek:
I will be glad to finish this one alive.

I haven't started too badly, take the nearset hut gave me a horse, non as i hadn't settled yet, sent him awandering and hut popping, only one barb so far and he was an easy kill. I took out the Carthginians and the Celts before they got started, allied with the spanish and the Zulus. I acn see the zulus being a right pain.

Citizens get unhappy real quick, though things have settled now that i have HG and Oracle. collosus is built and the caravans are begining to roll. Cureently running monarchy. 600AD. if i can get Mikes I'll be away.

Unfortunately people playing Civ 3 isn't the only thing making this a low turn out GOTM. Most people on the site don't play at deity. So, most people won't be playing this GOTM.

I hope they don't put too much weight on this one when they are deciding the fate of the Civ II GOTM. I'll continue to play them as long as I have time to do so. I'm trying to play every game that is a medium map or smaller, but have only been able to finish two so far. :(

Huh! Usually I don't play deity as it's not a very good levl for my strategy, :) Always as fast as I can to republic and fast expansion,! Hopefully I'll survive. Another thing that is different with deity is that you must build defenders in the beginning to keep the population happy...

I'll do my best....

I am still playing Civ2 Gotm and I hope it survive - simply I like it. I was happy when I saw my eight place in Gotm X untill I saw the number of players.

I am now in 1700 and going to defeat the last Spains. I was lucky to kill the only Celts city in the very beginning - when I see yours problems.

Yet about delty - I think that changing the strategies, depending on the level is funny.

I've pushed out a bit and found the orange guys still wandering around with their initial two settlers. So they died without even founding a city. I'm not sure what the AI was trying to do, but then again, who does.

Here's a screenshot of my demographics at 1950BC. I'm off to a very slow start this game and haven't been able to even touch it in a week, so odds are I won't be able to finsih it in time.

We need to have a talk with Thunderfall; his last three games have all been one huge contient. :( If its going to be a medium map, at least make it where we don't have to spend the entire game building cities.

I only have 7 cities, but I have found the white player, yellow player and a unit of the green player. Sorry, I never check who the AI civs are, just what color they are. I'm at war with all of them just so I can knock them down to one city (that's a non-capital) and decide who is going to be the pet city. :)

This is my first try at GOTM. I hate diety games.

Well I managed to kill the orange guys next to me early on and have been fighting a millenium long battle with the celts. I used caravans to rush build every wonder I could so I was in good shape whilst the Oracle, Sun Tzu, Michelangelo, Great Wall, Great Library and Leonardo kep me alive but one by one they expired and the Zulus and Spanish are racing ahead even though I have a two dozen cities.

One of them will definitely get to space first so I am giving up.

My first GOTM
Just found this site when I was hunting for civ3 info (I don't have civ3 yet...)
Also , I don't like deity, too much hard work.
I'm in 1955AD with 31 cities and growing fast, great opportunities for expansion.
Carths gone, a simmering war with Celts (5 cities left)
but with the Zulus ahead of me in research by 5-6 sciences and they are 1st in most demographics.
I'll hang in there...

I avoided this thread because I didn't want to inadverantly read a spoiler. I posted about my early game in the "seeing red" thread. To update from there. The Celts are gone, found the Spanish, and joined the attack (after getting 100 gold or better in tribute three turns in a row!!). bungled much of the initial attack and attempts to expand beyond the first city taken have really slowed me, and now I find I have no time with Christmas programs rapidly approaching (as I feared :( ) I had hoped to go for a quick military victory and finish this game, but it will not happen. I will likely finish the game, but long after the end of the month :( Sure wish we could make these two months instead of 1.

Got a great early goodyhut combo (2 Archers!) and went north to Carthage where I sheathed my arrows into the beating heart of Hannibal :D I'm presently moving west rapidly, filling the plains with settlers and on the verge of Monarchy. Celts are weak and out of my way for the time being. Cardiff seems like a good pet :p

Well I didn't give up but the Zulus killed everyone else (I had united nations) and their spaceship arrived in 1999 when I was building the last module.

I think I should have concentrated less on the spaceship and nuked Zimbabwe from a sub with one marine unit on a nearby transport to destroy their space command center. Well that is another story.

I got a pretty good start. Killed the orange player early and allied the Celts. It is about 200 years a.d. I have about 40 cities and colossus, mikes, hanging, and bachs. Happiness is working out well I've started to build up a SSC a few squares west of Trondheim. I'll try to get out of my alliance so I can kill off the Celts who are in the way of my expansion. I have made contact with all players and I'm at war with green, zulus?(dont remeber:))

Just a short summary. My biggest problem now will be to finish the game I have only 2 days, :)
