I have proof that the AI cheats in the harder levels... it doesn't cheat in cheiften, warlord and regent. But it does cheat in Monarch, Emperor and diety...

I was bored so I decided to make a very very small island and have only two civs side by side, a distance of one tile. I don't have to say anything more just look at the pictures.

This is monarch... it is the year 3950 bc.. only one turn has passed durnig the game.

Now this is diety... the Ai is getting 2 archers one spearman and 2 workers but they start off with just a worker and a settler but as soon as they built the city the units just pop out.

hmm... so the AIs also receive free units at start on higher levels!? This IS new info. :)

The free units the AI gets seem to be random. In a little test I did on deity level, the AI got 3 warriors, 1 archer, and 1 additional worker.

I hope we get an explanation on why this cheats were never mentioned before. I almost didn't enter here because I was tired of those "I have proof" threads that had no proofs. Now can someone at firaxis say something?

I remember reading in a forum where the firaxis people said that the AI don't cheat at all... so I guess they do. But there is more to this... we just know what happens in the begining of the game but we don't know if they keep on cheating after their first city is built.

So that's why my 1000/1000/100 Jaguar warrior runs into a ton of guys everytime the civ respawn..

Dunno why you remember that, because Dan *definitely* said that the AI gets cheats Monarch and up -- this was before release even. Don't understand why people are treating it like a conspiracy ... nice to know the details, though.

The official cheating is that the AI pays less for units and imrovements (was it 60% on Emperor and 40% on Deity?), but there has been no talk about free units.

It was commonly know that the AI cheats at the higher levels.
This info is not confidental, as it was well spred all over the internet, before the game was even released.
it is good to know those details, (thanks btw.) but don't just get why you kinda complain about it

ive always wondered about this too, i have always been amazed at how large the AIs armies are the first age... then somehow they are so easily defeatable in the the modern age

Here's a hot tip:

When the patch is released, go directly to the editor and hit the "Difficulty Levels" tab. This will settle, once and for all, what bonuses the AI gets on each difficulty levels.

Those who complain that the AI cheating on Prince and below will probably be embarrassed when they see just what the AI has to work with on those levels. But the free units at Deity is absolutely true. It's *SUPPOSED* to be nearly impossible, isn't it?? :)

Will that cover all the AI planning cheats such as looking at complete city garrisons, seeing units through fog of war, knowledge of unexplored map areas, etc... ? It does that at all difficulty levels and seems like it would really break things to disable it in the editor. Of course some of those cheats make the AI play worse instead of better, at least until the patch arrives :D

Also, will this finally let us disable AI respawning and settler teleportation in Civ3?

Not that it's particularly useful to complain about the AI cheating. Without it, the game wouldn't be particularly fun as the cheating is the only real source of difficulty.

Oh well, back to stomping on the "nearly impossible" deity civs. Maybe I'll finally break the 15,000 point mark this time :king:

I think once you get used to Deity, the advantages aren't so bad. But this explains why the AI is able to make contact with the other AI so fast - allowing for the huge tech headstart ... especially at Deity. It's actually quite frustrating not knowing these things ... you start questioning your own ability to play the game. But that said, it is the hardest level, and thus should play as difficult as possible ... I have no problem with it ... it could have been harder though ... no?

Question ... were there any plans to try and sustain the AI's advantage BEYOND the initial stages (production bonus apart)? It would be interesting to know what ideas might have been thrown about.

Another question ... does the AI get a corruption bonus?

In the notes for the patch, it talks about additions to the editor.
Some of these are the number of 'free' units the AI gets, etc.

I guess this confirms that it does cheat!

I think it sux that The AI have to cheat at higher level just to make it hard. I think the building speed is ok but getting free units isnt. You would think that just the building speed would make it almost impossible to win on deity if you have good AI
