Okay gang. Looks like we are about to found our first city. As Deputy CP minister I want to post a poll about what we should build first. I think I have included everything that we will be able to build. Let me know if I haven't.

Edit: This poll should end no later than 2300 GMT Wednesday.

Also, I hope you don't view this as a duplication, but I believe that previous polls started before we had the horseman and knew what our techs were.

Could somebody post a screenshot inside city?
I'd like to see shield production... What? We don't have city yet?

I am for a chariot because we have probably enemies very near (techs...)
and with chariots we can explore the nearest territories. With 2 exploration units we can
ensure that no enemy will sneak up and take our city; and with early times have no barbs,
So we can build a settler straight after chariot! And have second city fast! :D

AND WITH A WHALE RESOURCE, WE CAN BUILD THE CHARIOT FAST!
REMEMBER; EXPANSION IS THE KEY.
With chariot we can also take over enemy civ quickly...

DAMMIT!
Why we need a defensive unit? We can ensure that no civ attacks against us when leading
2 exploration units to the only directions! Nobody can attack us!
Dammit! Such a waste!

Why to build a warrior and settler when we can build a chariot and settler.
AND NOBODY COULD ATTACK US! (sorry for spamming... I just think this is so obvius...)

If we build settler straight ahead, then we would have to wait for city grow...
First Chariot, to ensure that no AI will attack us from other direction.

AND WARRIOR HAS NO USE FOR ENEMY WARRIOR/OTHER UNIT!

I voted settler. With the settler we could build roads, generate trade and tax revenue/science.

At least that's what I would do! ;)

Exactly. This is pretty much what I meant in my post in the other production thread: wait and see what our resources are.

I strongly recomend another moble unit, either Horse or Chariot.

If neither, than a phalanx.

I wouldn't build a settler till we know a bit more about the lay of the land.

Since we're going to use the Horse (2-1-2) for exploration, why not build a good defensive unit first? At this point in the game, the Phalanx (1-2-1) is the best defensive unit we have, while the Chariot (3-1-2) is the best attack unit. I would suggest we build a Phalanx first, then, a Chariot, then, based on the production levels of the city, we can either build a Settler, or another defensive unit.

dh7, and others, listen. When we have 2 exploration units going
to only land directions,
what the dell we do with that Phalanx? But chariot would be very useful, we could destroy the
nearest civ (which is probably close) before it gets annoying and scraps our growth
to massive army.

AND REMEMBER: We have Emperor difficulty, so first rebel appears on size 3.
When we are on size 2 and have chariots, we have production from
whale, buffalo and the preria what is our city. Thats 7 production!
We could easily built settler to use it on size 1, then phalanx and
then again settler!

We have very good chance because of 2 production spec. resources.

At start of game, we got only one settler. Chances are there aren't any enemy civs for miles and miles around for us to destroy ...... Chariots are too weak if attked. We'd more likely run into barbs rather than other civs. Esp fr those goodyhuts we sprung.

This may seem obvious, but the resources we're going to have are obvious. The AI will set it up so that we get the plains square we're going to settle on, irrigated and roaded of course, and then the whale. The AI always sets it up so that we get the maximum of food production and the irrigated plains and whale will give us 5 food a turn. Total, that is. We will therefore grow to size 2 after 4 turns and the settler will require 40 shields with our production at 4? (I think) So that's 10 turns of exploration with just the horsey. A warrior will take 3 turns and a phalanx 5. Someone else can work out how long it will take for us to reach size 3 with the buffalo included. Of course, we can always switch resources to get the max shield production and not waste any! We'll see what the result of the vote is. :)

[edit] Hmm, my maths isn't so hot after all, because I completely forgot that the city will grow to size 2 after 4 turns so we will have 16 shields stocked by then. After this, we will get another terrain square (buffalo, quite reasonably) and more shields will be added. So it won't take 10 turns to make a settler after all, but it will probably take more than a defensive unit to keep the people happy. :)

I'd say let's start building a phalanx for now and get the horseman to explore in the East (Is there another special there???) If the landmass seems big-ish then we should change to a more mobile unit (horseman or chariot depending on any enemy civs). It will take us 5 turns either way to build anything and the exisitng horseman can get a good idea of the neighbouring territory. Hey we could even change to a settler if ther is an excellent site nearby.

i suggest that we first build a warrior to have in our city to keep the citizens happy and then build our second settler.

Hey, Porn, does the Warrior keep folks happier than a Phalanx? I don't know much about military units and all. I was advocating building a Phalanx because it's a better defensive unit than the Warrior. Or, are you advocating for building a Warrior because its production cost is lower, and it won't take as long to build?

Juize, I understand where you're coming from. It's just that I'm normally a very cautious person, so I'd prefer having a defensive unit in our city while we explore. I also understand that you are for quick expansion, and believe me, I'm with you on that. My reason for wanting to build another military unit before the Settler is that I think we should have a military escort for the Settler. Plus, when we build that second city, the unit will defend it until we build a defensive unit for it. With the resources that we'll have, none of this should take long at all.
