Honestly, I'm surprised their isn't one yet.

As soon as I finish my fencer unit, I would like to create this blimp unit for you.

What do you want it to look like? Do you have any pictures?
What about stats? Any ideas?

I'm very open to ideas.

Perhaps something like the Hindenberg?

A few questions:
  • Is this unit an attack unit? (i would think it would be more for spying/recon )
  • Is this a unique unit for a certain civ?
  • Is it like a scout? (only a bigger move factor)

:) Good idea!:goodjob:

I would think that it would be an early bombing and recon unit, Attack 0, Defense 1 or 2, operational range 6-8. I'd prefer to see a generic zepplin (non-UU), but I should be able to use whatever you feel like working on. I don't have any pictures, but maybe someone else does. Thanks for taking up this project.

Yeah, I thought the UU idea was bad. Just wanted to make sure though.

Like I said, I need to finish my fencer first, but I hope to finish him this weekend.

I used a 3D model for the fencer and I think I'll make a 3D model of the blimp too.

personally, the idea came from my boston sports mod as an early air unit with no attack. i'd put it to better use then that, though. maybe add it to my cubamod.

Sports mod, eh?

Maybe we could make it the Goodyear blimp? (just jokin)

Almost ready to begin work on it

Hello! Just saying...
In WW1, the Zeppelin was one of the biggest threats to Britain. They'd drop bombs all over London. So I think the Zeppelin should definately be a bombard unit. It ought to have a pretty-allright D, though, since Zep's had many turrets.
I think this new unit would work out well with the Anti-Aircraft Gun unit that was discussed a few weeks ago. The interplay of these two could be interesting.
In any case, I think it should have the best aerial bombardment of any unit until the Advanced Bomber, just for the fact that it's able to carry so much more. Perhaps also a transportation unit, but I think its range ought to be shortened. No way 6-8 would be realistic. Zeps were fairly slow compared to other craft. I think a good way to simulate this would be to keep the range at about four, but allow base-switching.

Personnally I think zepplins should have a long range. Yes, they were slow, but they also had an extended range--they could fly across the Atlantic with minimal resupply. Also remember that one turn can represent anywhere from 5 years to 1 full year (by the time you get to the industrial age), so I don't think a range of 6 to 8 would be unrealistic. As for their defense, they had lots of machinegun turrets, but also lots of blindspots. And more manueverable fighters could fly circles around them. All in all, fighters generally got the better of zepplins.

I believe zepplins were able to carry a limited number of fighters themselves. An interesting unit concept would be to create an early blimp-carrier that could carry 1 or 2 fighters. I guess you would have to make the zepplin into a land unit to make this useful, though the AI probably wouldn't know how to use it properly.

Pesoloco: I like the blimp...it's a good start. Just wondering if you were ever going to finish the Red Baron unit? It would be a good compliment to the blimp unit.

Thanks. Sorry about the Red Baron unit. It's been left on the back burner for some time. Since I now know that people really want it, I will put more effort into it.

Thanks. I don't mean to rush you, but I have a couple of projects where I could use a WWI era fighter plane like your Red Baron. I think it looks cool too. Looking forward to it....

pesoloco,

the airship looks good so far. could you square off the fins though? right now I think they look just a tad too big. otherwise it is very nice.

Not a problem. I will adjust the fins and post a new preview soon.

hi there,

the idea of a zeppelin also accured to me (something like the kirov at red alert 2) - therefore i searched some pics to know what to create.

unfortunately my pc at home just crashed a few days ago...
and at work - i haven't got any pictures...

but i think i could still help.
fortunately i know of a german project called cargo lifter - they are building a zeppelin way much bigger than anything else ever seen. on their hp they got quite some beautiful 3d pics - so just search for cargo lifter within google and visit their hp...

there is also some interesting technical information, like range, transport capacity, speed and the most important: the measures

when i got more time (e.g. tomorow) i may return and post a pic...

with regards ;)
