So far I'd have to say I'm pretty impressed with the graphics for Civ III . . . with one exception:

Mountains.

I saw a screenshot (http://www.civ3.com/gallery.cfm - bottom right picture on 1st page) that had multiple mountain squares adjoining and was bothered to see that they didn't appear as if they were touching. They didn't have that "mountain range" effect that Civ II had. Instead they just look like many bumps sticking up next to each other.

Actually, there is a joining effect if you look closely, but it is rather small. I agree with you that it would be nice to have ridges; snow capped peaks would have been nice too.

My main beef with the mountains is that they look like those things kids make on the beach with buckets of red sand. As someone who's seen a lot of mountains (Rockies, Alps, Altai, etc) I can say I've never seen ones like these. Yeah, ones in Civ 2 were way better looking.

Like I've been saying over and over, the screens you are seeing (even the ones on civ3.com) are likely still undergoing refinement and polish. Case in point: there *are* snow-capped mountains in the game right now.

Until the game has gone gold and is out the door, you can expect we'll be continuing to tweak, polish, wax, and buff the game.

Hooray, Dan is back!
What about the yellow map tint, Dan? Have you gotten rid of that too?

You like it?? You weirdo!

Though I suppose it goes right along with the other abstract tendencies of the game, like the caricature leader portraits.

The looks of mountains and whether or not mountain ranges will be a possibility..? We really do have too much time on our hands don't we..?

Yeah. So much to do, yet too tired to do anything else than just browsing these boards and picking up some food for the mind. Too tired to sleep... "miles to go before to sleep". I know I'm gonna crash in a few minutes. But still I'm sitting here, staring empty at my screen. I must be a civfanatic.

PS. I like Dans answer. How come he doesn't visit more often? I like snowcapped mountains. I'd like to see some again. That's why I like Switzerland so much. It's the most beautiful country in Europe. And yes, Norway comes close second.

While we're talking about mountains, I'd like to bring something up. Will units like tanks be able to move across mountain squares that don't have a road or RR? In CTP (and yes, i know it is an inferior game) tanks are not permitted to move across undeveloped mountain squares. I think this accurately depicts real life situations and should be implemented in Civ3.

Does anyone have any information on this? If so, please enlighten us.

Of course tanks can move across mountains, but it will take longer for the drivers to choose the best route and then take it more slowly than they would normally. This is accounted for in the movement cost. Makes perfect sense.

Since when can tanks "of course" move through mountians? Tell you what, find the best modern tank you can find and try to drive it over the Alps without using a road or mountian pass. What, you say you can't without a road?!? Exactly!

Mountian passes aren't scattered every 1/2 mile (kilometer) and this single feature was a welcome improvement in CTP (even if a lot of other things stunk).

Unless units move by foot or helicopter they should not be able to cross a mountian unless there is a road.

Now then what would be really good (IMHO) would be if there were limited areas where mountian groups could be crossed (passes). Would serve to make the game much more strategically interesting.
