I was thinking about a dive bomber unit for an anti-ship plane. I can't animate for crap so i was wondering if someone could make one for me. I was think for it's bombing run it could do a barrel loop or a roll and dive. Can somone please make a dive bomber?

I am working at the moment on a Stuka dive bomber and a IL-2 russian ground attack plane which should both be don soon.
I don't know about a loop the loop :lol: most dive bombers, just flew stright at the target and hoped not to get shot! although her is a shot of some stukas for you, rolling in to attack position(the IL-2 will have civ coloured stars, so you can use it for any civ)

Here is a preview of my Stuka dive bomber, Iv'e only done the Default animation so far, but air units only need a default attack and death ani, so it should be finished soon. Its a shame you can't see all the detail cos I put two pilots in the cock pit wit transparent glass and every thing!

Iv'e also been working on a generic fighter bomber design, with civ coloured stars. The fighter in Civ III is a spitfire, and looks out of place for most civs. In any WWII scenario it is important to have a standard early war version of each unit type, that can then be upgraded to the advanced UU for each civ. so I made a plane for that, all thats left for this one is the death.
It could also be used as a carrier based fighter bomber or in any of the other roles that are missing for Civ IIIs early air war.

Great work Smoking Mirror! :D

I must report however, that Comrade Stalin is ordering you to produce the Il-2 Shturmovik as soon as possible! ;)

I want to do the IL-2, but I can't find any good isometric close up views. I need details of the cockpit set up and undercarriage (wheels).
When I did the Stuka 8way default, I had an exelent Southeast view of a stuka, without too much perspective distortion.

I am going to have another look around today, see if I can find some good shots. If any one has some (and they need to be a respectable size. about four times bigger than the actual unit picture) could they please post them here. Don't go mad, I only need a few.
I was goping to use the images from the "CTP WWII units" thread, but I don't like the way the east and west views come out. it looks like the plane is about to stall.

This is about the best I could find so far, and I think you will agree that it is too small;

Have a look at this website:

Russian Aviation Museum

It's got information and pictures on all the Russian aircraft including the Il-2. Hopefully you'll find it useful!

Actually this is an even better pic than any found on that website:

Thanks, thats fine. You can see certain details that are dificult to see on the smaller version; Such as the arangement of glass and struts, in the cockpit, those bumps in the wing that look like extra fuel tanks (?) the pointed shape of the propellor hub. Thes things dont realy show up in the unit, but are visible in the bigger images I am going to use for CIVlopedia images.

I am soon going to produce a set of "small" (units32) and "big" (civlopedia) images soon. I have finished my generic ground attack plane, and Stuka dive bomber and soon I will have time.

I've got a lot of plane images floating around my hard drive - give me a holler if you need anything specific. I don't really check out these threads very often, so I miss such requests.

I'm also the guy who posted the CTP2 graphics - I'm a bit puzzled how the east and west views are lacking. What angle would make them better, just out of curiosity?

The first two are actually of the il-10, which is a late model of the il-2, nearly identical.

Oh great!:)

With these I should be able to get it done.

With the CTP units you posted, what I meant about the East and west views being a little lacking is just that they are out of alignment with how all the other plane images are in Civ III, they look fine if used as units which move around the map like the "old" civ planes (like flying infantry, 8moves in one turn and back to the city to refuel). But the way that Civ III handles plane movement requires that the unit be facing exactly the direction it plans to go, because the animation is just the plane being moved across the map while the animation plays. It is not a problem with all of the plane images that you posted, some of them are just fine. (in fact on further inspection the russian and some of the german planes seem usable)
The real reson however that I wanted to start the IL-2 from scratch was that I wanted to give it a RUN animation, where it performs a slight roll, left and then right, a little like I did with the stuka.

Here is an example of the East alignment;

By the way, does any one know what the russians used after the IL-10 because I was thinking of doing some post war units, like c1950-60, I guess it would have been one of the early jet units.

SM,
I see what you mean about the CTP units. There's no doubt too that a made from scratch unit would be superior - I posted those more as a quantity as opposed to quality thing. If you want dozens of WW2 units, its gonna take a looong time to do them all by hand.

Anyways, I have a great source for images that show the same plane, tank, etc.. from many angles, so if you need any for future units, please let me know. They strangely don't have any Russian WW2 stuff, but that's a very rare hole. I'm gonna post a new thread about it later, and post some examples.

I don't know anything post il-10 - my knowledge pretty much ends with WW2! :) But given that the game has a:

Fighter Bomber
Jet Fighter --nothing!--
Stealth Fighter Stealth Bomber

It seems like a generic Jet Bomber would be really needed.

Also, I have a favor to ask. I'm interested in getting some Tom Davies made CTP units converted to Civ3 format (I posted a thread about that). He says he could send me the raw files needed from his Raydream 3D models if he knows the parameters. Could you send me the raw files for one of your units (one that has the civ-specific color thing working), and then I could use that as an example/guide? I'd also like to know how the whole civ-specific color thing works. Are there any good tutorials about that?

By the way, I saw your thread about making a 1984 type scenario. I think its a cool idea, but I would make the civilizations a bit different. Germany, Japan, US/England and Russia. In 1984 if you recall, there were only 3 left: Germany, Japan and US/England, but I think it isn't a stretch to imagine Russia surviving too. But its a huge stretch to imagine any kind of Muslim or African power, when even in WW2 itself all of those places were colonized or conquered by one of the major powers (Persia for instance being invaded and divided between the Allies and Russia). You also would be hard pressed to find any real life units/ history to draw from with such a made up power.

In 1984, southern Africa is held by US/England (with the country of South Africa as the strongpoint) and the north by the Nazis, with the middle a huge battleground/wasteland.

I think Turkey, northern Yemen, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia were the only Muslim countries to keep any independence. Had Rommel made it into Cairo few if any would have kept it long, one way or the other.

Anyways, the Germans and others had lots of fantastic units coming out that really never saw the light of day. I was gonna use some of these in my never done CTP WW2 scenario, to give the player more options. Probably the most interesting is the German P-1101 Fighter, which was to have been the next big step up from the Me262. I think one or two were cobbled together in Frankenstein fashion just as the war ended.

Other interesting "1945/1946" units:
Do-335 (best possible non-jet fighter, German)
Arado 234 Jet Bomber (actually got used a fair amount in '45)
He-177 Bomber (German heavy bomber)
Meteor Jet Fighter (British attempt at Me262)
Pe-8 Bomber (Russian heavy bomber)
Wasserfall SAM (some call this the V-3, would have been very effective)
XXI Type U-Boat (another big leap forward for the Germans)

Those would all go great for your scenario. The Germans had by far the most stuff in the works; there's even a website you can find called Luftwaffe 46, filled with wierd stuff. (Sorry for not posting this in the right thread, but I just kinda got rolling)

I use a 3D editor called Corel 3d dream; It comes free with Corel draw 8, its not very powerfull and not very compatible with other 3D programs. Here are those that can be imported, or opened;

Designer 3 and 4 (.RD4 and .RD3)
.DXF .3DMF .B3D

I don't know if I have anything that can open Raw files (or am I just being supid).

Any way in reference to the Post war scenario, yes I was thinking of scraping the middle eastern fundamentalist Civ and just having a nazi ocupied North africa and a small free south african state, part of the weak independent civs. The logic behind the middle eastern/african civ was that the pre war history of the middle east has been shaped almost totaly by the nation of Israel, with out which history would have been very different.
Also the british were able to win the north african campaign with out direct intervention by the americans, thie scenario will be based on a kind of similar line to 1984, but remember that it starts in 1946/47, so there are lots of independant states yet to be absorbed in to the Superpowers. One of the first job for each player would be a kind of land grab, snatching up the territory controled by the lesser powers. In Robert Harris' "fatherland" the nazis didn't have control of north africa, even in 1960, because the american A bomb had put a stop on their expansion.
But even though britain had won the first north african war, could they win a second in 1950? (they didn't have much success with the suez crissis)
