I didn't like the small size of resource images in Civ3. So I've made them all larger, and added quite a few new ones for mods. All the resources are larger, to make them easier to see.

Use this if you're looking to add resources to your game, or if you just want the current ones to look better.

There are 36 new resources, namely:

Timber
Copper
Seal
Walrus
Crab
Salt
Wool
Fruit
Oasis
Clay
Marble
Sugar
Tobacco
Coffee
Silver
Gems (original Gems graphic file is actually called Diamonds and would serve better as that)
Tin
Rice
Opium
Offshore Oil
Cotton
Glass
Amber
Lead
Papyrus
Linen / Flax
Tea
Jade
Corn
Potato
Hemp
Olive Oil
Pearl
Porcelain

Let me know if there are any problems - this hasn't been thoroughly playtested. Enjoy.

Here are what the new resources look like:

Compared to the version that came with the game:

Every new resource also comes with graphic files necessary to update the civilopedia, such as this one:

Finally, here is the zip file to download:

very nice... but I would reccomend changing the rice/cotton/salt and probably a few others so that they look like they are coming out the ground, like cattle and wheat. It just looks kinda odd to have a rice patty sitting flat like it is in 2 dimensions on a flood plains.

Ex,
I'm not sure I know what you mean. I can't see any difference between the ground connection of the Cattle and Wheat and the new ones. Niether of those are sticking out of the ground - the wheat being a bushel of cut and dried wheat. A main thing to make them look 3D is shadows, and all the new graphics have shadows as well (you don't see them here cos they're stored in a different file).

The main criterion to me is having something that is recognizable. For instance, I could have a pile of white powder sitting on the ground for salt and sugar, but then how could one tell the difference between either of those, or between them and gunpowder?

itd be like drawing a pear in two dimensions, just flat, no depth or angles - Like a child would - as opposed to drawing it isometrically (i think) w/ depth, like a pro. Notice how the wheat and cattle are at a slight angle, but the ones i mentioned are not. They are just flat, like the words you are reading.

BTW, its no problem - just a suggestion. I love your work, I am using them as we speak!

I see what you mean now. Your mention of the wheat threw me off, cos I can see the isometric view with the cow, but not really with the wheat.

Anyways, I didn't draw these, I just shrunk down some photos, so non-isometric they will stay. Unless you know of some pictures that are better (and at least 100 by 100 pixels, for the civilopedia files) that you can point out to me and simply require shrinking and converting.

Is there a safe way to add the new resources into the game, to where they are useable and will show up?

Also, I drew a random map in the editor after adding your graphic pack. In the editor, the resources have a pink/magenta |_ around them; it doesn't show up in the played game though.

I would recommending installing Mizaq's Root mod, and following the instructions from there. Then install my graphics modpack. Mizaq's adds lots of blank spots for extra units, resources, etc.. and you just have to do a few simple things to fill in the blanks.

Beware though that there are limits to how many resources one can add, esp. strategic and luxury types. Does anyone know exactly what those limits are?

The graphical glitch you speak of was with the first version of this modpack. Have you downloaded the updated version? There's a link to it in the first post of this thread.

Limits:

Only 8 Luxury Resources. They have to be placed on exactly the same position on which the original luxury resources are now. That means you can REPLACE luxuries, but you can't add or remove any of them. If you want to replace a luxury resource by another pic, you have to copy the new resource on the position of the luxury resource you want to kick out. In hard words: Do NOT use the "luxury"-flag of the editor.
Note: Replacement of the luxury-pic inside the city screen is possible by edding the luxurysmallicons.pcx.

Only 36 different pictures. You can only use the first 36 pictures of your resources.pcx. That means, if you want to use any picture after coffee (no 36), you have to copy and paste it, and replace one of the first 36 pics.
Note: In the EDITOR more than 36 resource-pics will be seen but not in the game itself. They are there (contributing food etc. to the tile) only they are INVISIBLE. You can use more than 36 pic, but you can't see them.

You can add as many strategic resources as you want (well, at maximum 28 (36 - 8 luxuries) ). If you have more than 8 strategic resources they won't show up in the city screen, but at least they cause no problems and work well with wonders and units.

There are no limits on the number of resources if you don't use more than 36 pics. That means you can have mirror resources like fertilized wheat (available with chemistry) introduced with Kittenofchaos' mod.

Being a perfectionist, I decided after all to do what I could about the graphics not looking sufficiently "isometric". They should now be more 3D, and fit in the game better.

Exsanguination, anything still not isometric enough for you?

I've added two new ones (Corn and Potatoes) and completely overhauled some others to make them more 3D, or cos I wasn't happy with them (Tea and Rice). I'm still working on the shadows, but here's what I have so far:

(see below for latest version)

Harlan, looking good.

I do have a question: I downloaded your graphics. Then I started a game, I can't find several of the resources: papyrus does not show on the map visible, but if you right click, it shows papyrus as a resource on a square. I did make it a requirement for Libraries. I had some early game, then it dried up; later a new message about finding more papyrus, and I did a square by square search to find it. Gems may also be invisible as well. I thought maybe I had overlooked them (wishful thinking), but I was long enough into the game to not want to quit. LOL Which probably means since they fixed the edit game thing, I may not be able to go into the game bic to effect the appearance in this game.

do you have a good mod that might jsut be able to add those graphics in and just put in the new resources, bc i am looking for one but dont want to have a million different things changed

Kring, Nonnob3, thanks. Kring, I don't know the answer to your problem - maybe someone else here does.

Absent,
I don't have such a thing, but maybe someone could whip up someone for you. However, I would advise caution - in a mod I'm making now, I found that if you add a bunch of bonus resources, you just get more resources on the map, since you can't control the frequency of appearance of bonus resources at all. With lots of extra trade points, science goes faster and games are even quicker. So if you add trade points to new goods, deduct an equal amount from preexisting goods to keep the game balanced.

so it's up to me again. does anybody bother to read my posts *smile* ;)

You're right with what you've found out so far. The answer is, that all resources above No. 36 are invisible in the game itself. This means, they are there contributing food and shield and trade to the tile - but you just can't see them.

If you want to use resources like papyrus, you have to copy it to one of the first 36 fields of your resources.pcx.

Gelvan,
It may not necessarily be that simple. I played a mod (I think it was the Real Deal mod) where only 3 resources were added, yet some of them didn't show up, some did. It could be a case of misnaming a file, wrong color palatte, or some other mistake.

In any case, I'll have a new version of this mod out soon, so if its a problem on my end, that will probably take care of it.

I'm just about finished with the second version of this mod. A few more resources got in.

Here's a list of all the ones that didn't come with the game, minus the last two rows, which are early versions of some of these.

Timber
Copper
Seal
Walrus
Crab
Salt
Wool
Fruit
Oasis
Clay
Marble
Sugar
Tobacco
Coffee
Silver
Gems
Tin
Rice
Opium
Offshore Oil
Cotton
Glass
Amber

Papyrus
Linen / Flax

It looks even better than your earlier one. I can't wait to try it out. Keep up the good work.
