Has anyone heard of www.viewpoint.com? Man, do they have the graphics. They allow you to view about 5 sides of each graphical model for free, but beyond that, you need to pay to get the actual 3D models (very expensive). Interestingly, I saw a mention that "We've built custom characters for films like ANTZ and Godzilla, and for games like Civilization II & III, Abe's Oddysee, Gauntlet: Legends and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy."

I didn't see any legal disclaimer against using their free image views. Unfortunately these views typically aren't as top down as the usual Civ3 unit views. But maybe someone can find a way around that, or put it with it.

Here are some examples of units I would really like to see made into Civ3 units. I hope someone does! Of course they have tons of tanks, tons of planes, modern ships, but its the more unusual stuff that one rarely sees that I found most interesting.

German WW2 Arado Jet Bomber:

Early Cannon:

Dromon / Late Galley (this was the main Meditteranean ship for over 1000 years, different from Greek/Roman galleys)

Here's a few more. I complied different images to try and best match the Civ3 angles. Sometimes they line up closely, sometimes they don't.

Roman era infantry (just about the only decent person graphic they have, strangely enough. I imagine all the ones they made for Civ2, Civ3 and such aren't available for the general public):

If you like this kind of thing, they have thousands more, most from the modern era. These were some of the very few ancient/ medieval models.

Too bad that Civ3 takes a different angle. The Arado, for instance, should have much wider wings, as you're looking at it from a high viewpoint and not so much headon.

 WOW! These are AWESOME. I love that Dromon. Absolutely awesome.

Womoks, where are you? You've got to see this. :)

EDIT: I just checked out the site. They have awesome stuff for Ship-of-the-Line, WWI transport, WWII aircraft carrier, jet bomber, subsonic early jet fighters, modern landing ship/transport, on and on. Wow.

Yeah, they have awesome stuff. Too bad the perspective angle isn't the same. Also, there's a trick in getting the more angles: many units have very high, high, medium and low versions. The very high and high are nearly identical, and even the medium is sometimes essentially identical. So if you don't see say a straight ahead or straight behind view in the very high, check the high or medium.

I don't know if it's helpful, but the page linked below has a selection of VRML models of modern aircraft, mostly Russian and American. They could be used to create Civ3 units maybe.

The website is in Russian, but the models are self-explanatory.

Also, as I mentioned somewhere else in this forum, there is a website Gunpoint-3D which also contains previews of 3D models of military hardware, which are also very good. Check it out.

hey if you can get me some units with the following directions i can try to make you one, N, S, SE or SW, W or E, and NE or NW and i don't care what type of unit it is as long as it isn't an air unit then just post the pictures on this site and ill try to check up on it. but i can't promise i will be very good or fast at it. Also i'm not sure how to do jointed things like running or fighting except if its rockets or guns or mobile so keep it in that category

ohh also if you did want an air unit and you have the n, s, se or sw, w or e, and ne or nw, i can make it but not with any shadows

i will try to make that cannon up above

hey if you want to make units the best things to used i think would be both animation shop 3, and paint shop pro 7 both from JASC so that is the web site www.JASC.com also i am currently looking for a 3d program i have quick 3d but i don't have the full version and if i had, had it i would only need one pic of a unit in .3ds format or other 3d formats and then you just twist it and save the picture as a 2d format, so if you have any 3d software that i could download that allows you to have the option of making a 2d export file than tell me and hopefully this will help out.

:crazyeye: opps i forgot to tell you that animation shop comes with the full trial version of paint shop so don't try to find both

hey also if you need the tutorial go to http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14394 its by dark sheer but its not for v1.21 i think but the main diffence is that you don't have to shift units over on the units_32 and you must use the flicster program by *monir*(spelling) to make it eaiser.

Incubus,
Great that you're making that Cannon. I sure could use it. I just hope that you include civ-specific coloring areas. Most unit makers seem to not include that :(.

Hey people one thing i noticed about trying to make units form the 3ds file is that once you convert it to a 2d format you have to shrink it down by like 25% which then after that i looks really different form the org. picture. Also i tried to find the cannon so i could make it but pleaseharlan if im going to make it tell me the webaddress.

k thanxs and also check out my general unit i just made i used the viewpoint stuff so theres and example of what i can do also it didn't take me long so i would say i will have this done maybe by next weekend if i don't have alot of homework to do beside my finals. Also i can't find the south view so it may be a little acquired for that view otherwise I think it'll be good

Incubus,
Cool. For the south view, check out both Medieval Cannon 1 and 2, and also check out the various high, medium, very high, etc... Except for the low view, all of them are pretty much the same quality, and some show slightly different angles. It was from one of those that I got the straight on south view. Or you could just grab the graphic I posted earlier in this thread.
