The 1230 AD save is here: phoenatica1230.zip

Here is the last turn chat thread.

A short history of Phoenatica

Since we hope to get into the habit of having turn summaries I thought it would be appropriate to start this thread off with a short history of our country's first five thousand years.

Our first city, Fox Nest, was founded about 5,000 years ago. As our population grew we sent settlers out to colonize the surrounding area. The great sea was to the west and south was very hilly. There were mountains to the north and the sea as well so our settlers looked to the east. There were fine lands in that direction but they were settled by the Americans.

We had warriors scouting the outlying areas in those days and they discovered many other countries. Some of these countries thought Phoenatica was weak. One, Babylon, even threatened our leaders and demanded maps of Phoenatica. Our leaders wisely refused, knowing that surrendering our maps might lead to invasion. The rebuff enraged the Babylonian King who declared war on Phoenatica. The Babylonian King bribed another country to join the war against Phoenatica and this country bribed another and so on until Phoenatica stood alone against the Domino Alliance.

Most of the early fighting in the Domino Wars was in America as our mighty immotals set out to defend Phoenatica. Soon, a great leader, Charis, formed an army of immortals which conquered America and Egypt as well.

During the Domino Wars our country began a great project in Fox Nest. A Great Library that was meant to store the knowledge of the entire world. Despite the wars, the Great Library was completed bringing much knowledge to Phoenatica through the ages.

Once the Domino Wars ended, Phoenaticans turned their energies towards trading and building up a fine culture. The old monarchy gave way to a republican form of government and peace became the norm. Phoenatica was once more the target of a foreign war when the Aztecs attacked. Other countries remembered the fate of the Americans and Egyptians in the Domino Wars and the Aztecs were unable to find allies. The Aztec war was short and Montezuma sued for peace after losing the city of Tlaxcala and having his iron mines destroyed by Phoenatican knights.

As Phoenatica looks toward the dawn of a new era she is at peace with her neighbors while the citizens of foreign tyrannies beg to join the Phoenatican republic!

Let's try to follow the proposed format. Turn chat instructions start here. One post per department please.

Instructions from the President's office. Bold indicates there are relevant instructions posted in this thread.

Pre-turn order:

1) build queues (Istar, Normandy, Ameri, Asphinxia, New Cormyr, Kashmir, Province #10
2) FA instructions
3) trade deals
4) domestic dept. instructions
5) military instructions
6) NSD instructions
7) Culture Ministry instructions
8) New CAP City was renamed Plexia during the last turn chat and it must be changed in the game

Notes for mid-turn chat:

We will have physics in 3 turns and may possibly acquire free artistry or metallurgy through trades. We need a science queue accordingly.
Refer to FA instructions if any country wants to renew RoPs or peace treaties.

Foreign Affairs:

Turn 0
Zululand:
ROP + Contact With English <-> ROP

Babylon:
Extortion time: Renegotiate peace for all their gold (6).

Turn 5 and beyond
- The peace deals will expire with India, Rome, Iroquois and Greece. I suggest we let them continue, preferably without renewing. If they demand renewal, we should just take peace-for-peace.

If the Aztecs demand peace renegotiation, I recommend taking the best deal available based on priority:
1. Most expensive Tech.
2. Most total Gold.

Normandy

Miami: aqueduct[c]/ marketplace
Boston: aqueduct[c]/ marketplace
Washington: musketman[c]/ marketplace
Chicago: temple[c]/ marketplace

[c]= Current

I have done some research into new trade possibilities, given that we can get Contact with the English from the Zulu with a ROP. This will allow us to ask for more gold from our potential trading partner. In a brief discussion with Chieftess, our honourable Trade leader, I found she was approving of these deals:

India:
Free Artistry <-> gems
WM
174 Gold
2 gpt
(thats a total of 214 gold over 20 turns)

Iroquois
Free Artistry <-> gems
WM
121 Gold
8 gpt
(thats a total of 281 gold over 20 turns)

The only reservation I have about this is keeping the Iroquois honest abut 8gpt. If they run out of money to pay for their trade, they may declare war. I'm not sure we're in danger here, but I thought I'd note it. We could bump it down to 7, possibly.

This all hinges on whether we really want Free Artistry. I suggest that we take it, because it will also get us more gold, and, even if we do not plan to build a great Theatre to honour Sir Shakespeare, we have a backup plan or switchable shield-holder. Response is requested from our citizens, and especially from the NSD and Domestic leaders and deputies.

If any techs are complete just follow the poll or anything else. If it comes to need be just vote for it.

Thanks,
Strider

The New Age Has Dawned!

We finally made contact with the *English* in 1130 AD thanks to our friend Shaka and our new right of passage deal with Zululand. As soon as communications with this strange new people was established we managed to double the size of our treasury! We did this by giving Elizabeth a letter of introduction to Ceasar and teaching the English about our new republican form of government (we threw in a lesson on vetos for free). Along with the English gold we acquired a map of the England lands. They live on an island all by themselves! The English maps also revealed three previously unknown islands, all of which are very small. Two are occupied by India and one by the Iroquois. We also arranged to export our extra gems. The competition for these high quality gems was pretty stiff between Ghandi and Hiawatha but the latter came up with more gold and was awarded the deal. The gem imports broght over 100 gold into our treasury along with another 4 gold/turn. We also acquired *free artistry* in the deal.
In the year 1140, Magellan (the Iroquois) managed to sail completely around the world! On the home front, Port Gisnod completed an aqueduct while workers were dispatched to Khatovar and Callisto to improve the lot of those living in these cities.
Ten years later San Fransico completed its own water works system while Khatovar opened our nation's third bank. Phoenatica's financial recovery continued as the treasury reached gold.
A *theory of gravity* was formulated in 1160. The residents of Callisto built a wall all around their city! PDX had earlier been chosen as the site of Phoenatica's next great project and there was much debate about just what this project should be. By the slimmest of margins and in what is sure to be a controversial decision, culture won out over science and a great theatre was begun in PDX. That same year spice exports to England were begun and English *wines* began flowing into Phoenatican ports. As part of the trade agreement Phoenatican engineers were sent to train Englanders in thier science. Elizabeth also insisted that we teach her all about monarchy. (It seems she does not like the veto clause that comes with republicanism.);) Spices and incense exports to Iroquoisland were also commenced at this time. In return, Hiawatha agreed to pay 11 gold/turn and sent Iroquoian artisans to teach our people the fine art of metal working. The President categorically denied that the increased spice exports had anything to do with the fact that the founder of the Spice Traders Guild is now VP.
In 1170 AD Shakespeare's Theatre opened in PDX with the play *The Merchant of Fox Nest*. Abydos completed a courthouse while Pherris laid the cornerstone of what is hoped will be a great university.
1180 was a quiet year except for the sounds of the *rifles* heard near the Greek border. The Civil Defence Board reminded the President that Phoenatica still has spearmen.
The decade of the 1190s saw the completion of a temple in Elephantine, a cathedral in New York and an aqueduct in Miami.
Our peace treaty with Greece was renewed in 1200 even as the sound of *rifles* was being heard on the Iroquoian border. A deal was struck with Ceasar wherein we exported horses to Rome in return for military tradition.
Lobbying by the War Church and Civil Defense Board resulted in the authorization of a military academy in PDX in 1210 and work was started on the project.
The 1220s saw the completion of Shailonegha's library and the understanding og magnetism. A great wave of patriotism and nationalism spear over Phoenatica as well.
Byblos built a temple in 1230 and Malinalco completed a cathedral soon after. Eyr opened Phoenatica's fourth bank and the Phirst Phoenatican Cavalry Regiment was recruited in Philadelphia. There are strange tracks inside Greece... BTW, we lost our gems near Tlaxcala! They are niside Greek borders again!
Phoenatica's fiscal recovery is well underway as the treasury now stands above 1300 gold. Both Smith's Trading Co. and the Forbidden Palace will be complete within 30 years bringing further boosts to our treasury. We are still a bit behind in technology but are gaining fast. Things are looking up!
