I woke up in time to see the golden goal (the game started 03:30 am here in Brazil), so I can't evaluate who played better... nonetheless, the replays they showed after the match tells me that Senegal suffered at least two penalties, and the referee failed to book'em... so, if things went ok, there should be no overtime to begin with, and justice was served.
They said on TV today that the golden goal is being abandoned. The reasons for this are obvious: it will make for a more interesting overtime, without as much calculating and with more offensive play.
i thought both sides were relatively attacking in extra time, unlike spain in the other match, and there were definite chances to score. however, in most instances the golden goal roal has created too much tension for creative play to flourish, so it probably should get the axe..
But I can say that I accurately predicted Sweden's demise after I heard they lost, LOL.... I'm such a positively prestidigious prognosticator predicting past play....
Senegal played much rougher than they did in the opening rounds! I'm happy to see them advance. Sorry Swedes, but your team just wasn't any fun to watch this world cup. Senegal has been entertaining - that gets my support in matches between teams to which I am otherwise neutral...
At least you can still claim to have ousted Argentina...
Portugal never deserved to go through, because they played really bad this world cup. I don't know about France, but they didn't seem very sharp anyway. At least Sweden deserved to go through.
Now I will hold my thumbs for England and Senegal. Senegal is a really good team to have beaten Sweden, so they can go far.
