FA's official position for a rogue state such as Greece is an opportunistic gain. Seeing as they have not much to give up, I think we can be lenient on this.
on one hand: peace - preferably with a profit. war should seldom be the option. end the war as soon as possible
on the other hand: it seems important to contain the aggression towards our glorious nation. therefore, we should be in control of them - though not necessarily by war.
I will forever be known as a pacifist, and my ever humble opinion is to defend ourselves when needed - do not go on the offensive. End the war as quickly as possible
Once again I point out this is kinda oxymoronic. You're first goal, staying on a defensive, can never accomplish the second, the quickest peace possible. Even if we loose nothing because of such a great defense it will take Alex forever to ask for an acceptable peace. If we start taking cities, however he will be more prone to provide an acceptable peace sooner since he would want to keep what's left.
Of course I have enountered 1 city Civs who refuse to acknowlage that they're doomed if they don't give in, and insist that I will "Soon be crushed." But if this happens with Alex, just think of how long the war would have gone if we hadn't taken him.
Secondly, Greece is currently doomed because of their own "Domino War" against them. The other AI's are bound to crush him regardless. Now that we have war, I think we should try to get as much as we can out of this while we can, denying the other AI's Greece's riches. This would be esp good since several of the cities (specifically Delphi) are relatively close to our Forbidden Palace and could be quite productive.
falcon: I do believe you're right.but just in case there is a misunderstanding:
- my personal opinion: no war. On this matter, my opinion is to stay on the defense.
- for the benefit of our nation: "assimilate" Greece into Phoenatica, leaving one city for the others to finish off.
In my above post I found myself speaking against my own opinion. I agree that we probably will not profit by defending ourselves. Still, mankind will profit, as we will avoid the blodshed(though I foresee that many will not accept this as being profitable enough).
You are of course right about Greece's doom. If we must pursue an offensive; then we should go for key/core cities and leave the rest. If there is time (before Greece is eliminated) we can then negotiate a profitable peace treaty - I hope
There is one city on an island, and another along the Iro./India border. We can always sign an allience (will that hurt our reputation?) with India (or Iro - poetic justice)..
