The Asphinxian Weekly Times

From now on, the Asphinxian Weekly Times will be a regular fixture. It is not designed as independant media, but a way I, as Governor of Asphinxia can keep all Asphinxians advised about things which affect Asphinxia. Plus I can limit what I have to cram into my Governor's Report!!

Anything you would like in the next, or later, editions, feel free to PM me. This offer is open to all Asphinxian residents or others with something important to say. Editions will not come out every real time week, just every time I think there's enough new info to write a new edition!!!

The views expressed in this are purely my own, that's the idea. They do not claim to be the definitive word on all issues or even a guide of any kind as to what you should think. This is merely in informational service for the citizens of our Province.

Edition 1 - 21/7

News:

The Iroqunos have been driven from Asphinxia and thier armies crushed. The artillary command centre in Thebes was a vital link in the military communications network.

New Mayors have been appointed to four cities in the Asphinxian heartland, Mayor Philippe of Byblos, Mayor CivGeneral of El Armarna, Mayor BCLG100 of Abydos and Mayor Trader/Warrior of Anyang. This marks a significant step foward in the push to get more citizen input flowing into the Forbidden Palace. Callisto is the only Asphinxian city without a local government.

A unified provincial University system may become a reality, with most cities now containing Universities. It is currently the aim of the Governor and the Mayors to have all Asphinxian cities equipped with a Library, University and Research lab this century. This will greatly assist the National Literacy Program.

The proposed Blue Mountians NP is likely to go ahead pending support for the Phonatican National Parks Service. Several other proposed NP's lay within Asphinxian Territory. The Governor has voived his support, but maintaining that each case must be looked into on an individual basis and approved by the planning offica and the Mayors of any cities affected.

The Ambassador to Greece and Asphinxia's favorite scholar, Ehecatl Atzin, has managed to smuggle a second dispatch from Troy, where he is conducting a diplomatic mission. Mr Atzin is a respected historian and the author of a number of best selling novels about early Asphinxian development.

Preparations for the Grand Banquet of Asphinxia are well underway, with the date, menu, location and attendance list in their final stages. The banquet, the brainchild of Asphinxian Recreation Minister Stuck_As_a_Mac, will bring together the leaders of Phoenatica and citizens from all the provinces. More information and links can be found in the Governor's report. All citizens are invited.

The Demogame RPG has taken off, with a numer of Asphinxian Officails offering to help with the set up. An offer to locate the central RPG bank in Thebes has been submitted. Both S.A.a.m. and Mayor Danke are lending their fiscal management skills to the establishment of this enterprise. A new naming system has been proposed by Strider, in which citizens can include their city of origin in their name. Asphinxian residents are usged to participate.

A proposal has been made by former Governor Eklektikos to change the name of Anyang to Arakkis and move the Spice Trader's Guild HQ to that city. The Governor's Office has offered support conditional upon citizen approval. This would offer great oppertunities for the city of Anyang and the STG. So far there has been little discussion on the topic, with only Mayor philippe speaking out against it. A branch office of the STG has been opened in Elephantine.

The Courthouse of Thebes has been sold and all of it's responsibilities taken over by the Forbidden Palace. The historic building is undergoing renevation and will be re-opened soon as an art gallery.

News:

Disaster!!
No sooner than the most recent dispatch arrived from our Greek Ambassador, Ehecatl Atzin, that we got a radio message indicating he was lost at sea. The dispatch arrived through back channels and informed us that Ehecatl was attempting to make an escape from his silken prison, the Palace of Alexander II. He planned to leave by ship and sail straight to CSIM, but it is feared that he revealed too much of his plans. As the Zulus stormed Troy, destroying the Greeks once and for all, a Greek privateer flying neutral colour slipped away from the city and begun following the fleeing Ambassador. Under cover of darkness, the ship launched a cowardly attack on the diplomatic vessel carrying Ehecatl and sunk it. Using the ships on board radio, a final transmission was sent to General Falcon at his command HQ. The science department and Asphinxian treasuries are funding an all out rescue mission. A unit of the famed El Armarna Marine Immortals are being rushed south under the direction of Civgeneral, Mayor of El Armarna and a leading naval strategist.

BCLG100 has been given the keys to the city of Delphi by disorganiser. During the recent discussions on how the country should be run (turnchat), disorganiser was unable to gain acess to some vital information. BCLG100 aided him in this and was rewarded with a pledge of friendship. He has shown himself to be a model citizen, of whom we should all be proud.

The soon to be established Blue Mountains NP is in need of a Park Ranger. The Governor has indicated it would be best if a citizen of Asphinxia was in charge of managing this land. Apply at the domestic department.

The census may be really out of date, a new report has shown. This is mainly due to citizens not declaring their new locations or governmental positions. In the official cencus, Asphinxia has only 3 citizens currently. The unofficial cencus compiled by Danke is more accurate, but still has Asphinxia far more underpopulated than is the case. The Governor has sent out an appeal for all new citizens and officials living in Asphinxia to update their submissions to the census.

Due to a resurgence in the engagement of citizens in Asphinxian politics, we now have a Mayor in every city save one. Callisto is still without a local government. If Callisto were to take on a new mayor, Asphinxia would be the only privince to have a Mayor in every city. There have been some expressions of interest, but no solid applications as yet.

There are no new issues gone to the polls, but the run off for census officer has become more intense, with Danke releasing his plan for the Census Office and Zarn calling on Kashmiris for aid.

News:

Asphinxians vie for new provinces!!
Two of the three candidates for Governor of province #10 and #11 (as yet unnamed) are Asphinxians. Stuck_As_a_Mac and BCLG100 are both running. Myartar is also running. Both of the Asphinxian candidates hold postions they may have to surrender, but every effort will be made to keep thier link to Asphinxia alive. Both candidates have the Governor's support.

A proposal has been made by Donsig to introduce Depudy Governors. Gov Almightyjosh has indicated that Asphinxia does not need a Depudy Governor, due to the input of Mayors and Officials towards the governing of Asphinxia. It must be recognised, however, that in some provinces Governors take unanounced leaves of absence and leave the province without leadership.

There has been much happening in the city of Anyang. The former Mayor Trader/Warrior has resigned in ailing health and moved to Sunshine Beach in Kashmir in order to run the hotel there. Stuck_As_a_Mac has been appointed Mayor in his place. The proposal to change the name of Anyang to Arrakis has been put to the people after winning enough support in the STG. This is a positive change and is endorsed by the Governor and the Mayor.

The Phoenatica Weekly Standard newspaper is out of print, leaving the Asphinxian Times as the only regular publication in the country. Citizens of all provinces are encouraged to read the Times for up to date news on citizens, government and polls.

Stuck_As_a_Mac is establishing the first National RPG Bank and is setting out the standards by which Government officials are paid. Either they are paid fro their highest postion or paid for each position they hold.

Civgeneral has proposed a National Guard and Coast Guard system. It would work in a way similar to the way workers are controled by Porvincial Governors, but applying to military units. During peace-time, Governors would be responsible for troop garrisoning in thier cities. During war time, this power would pass back to the millitary leader. This allows Governors to control units in thier province, in the case of Asphinxia, most of which were created here. The Govenor supports the proposal for the establishment of a National Guard and Coast Guard, recognising that sometimes this power must be resigned.

News:

Victory!!
The Governor's favourite sayind "Victory for Asphinxia" has come true!! Two Asphinxians, BCLG100 and Stuck_As_a_Mac have been voted in as Governors of provinces #10 and #11 respectively. The Governor would like to thank all those Asphinxians who came to the polls and supported their countymen. This victory is bittersweet, however, because these two must now leave our province and take up residence in their new Capitals. However, S.A.a.M. will retain his title as Head of R&D, even though both must relinquish their Mayor titles. It can be hoped that this will forge strong relations between Asphinxia and her daughter colonies. This left a number of Mayorial positions vacant. Anyang, Callisto and Abydos were Mayorless. However, Ehecatl Atzin, back from Greece, will be taking over the administration of Abydos and Bearnstein has come down out of the hills near Callisto to lead that city (though he doesn't know it yet). Once more we have only one city without a Mayor, Anyang.

The Grand Banquet of Asphinxia has begun, with the Governor and the President both giving speeches. All citizens of our nation are encouraged to participate whenever they can.

Delphi County recreational area has opened, encompassing the cities of Delphi and Sunshine Beach, the Spice Bay recreational area and the Blue Mountains NP, jointly established with Asphinxia. This is billed as the premiere relaxation establishment in Phoenatica.

A new Air Force and Navy League has been established by Raven1er to promote the strengthening of our Air and Sea forces. As Asphinxia is a leader in millitary technology and hi-tech unit production (some of our fisrt bombers came from Thebes and the first destroyer in this herisphere was commissioned in El Armarna!) the Governor strongly supports this movement. As we have learnt from the Iroquonos, you can't trust anyone, you can't be too ready.

He's Back...
Ehecatl Atzin has staged a trumphant return in what many are calling a return from the dead. Ehecatl was feared lost at sea, but has been found washed up on a beach in Kashmir, cold but alive. Plans for the Ehecatl Atzin Memorial Gallery of Contempary Art will be kept, but the name will change to omitt the 'memorial' part. Shaitan has established a new embassy in the far off land of Apoltonia. This will serve as a link between our two worlds. Maybe we should send Ehecatl on another diplomatic mission!

I will attept to put in what position EVERY Asphinxian is running for, a short statement by them (PM me one), something by the Governor (in brackets) and a link to the poll when the time comes. Asphinxia has got a great track record with getting our people elected office, so do your duty and Vote Asphinxia.

Edition 5 - 26/7

The Red Butterfly of Asphinxia is now the official emblem of the Province. The governor was hesitant to declare this before, as a number of citizen groups were also using it. However, the only currently active citizen group using the butterfly is the Spice Trader's Guild (page 2) which is baced in Asphinxia. The butterfly can be used to idetify any thread or PM relating to Asphinxia, between Asphinxian citizens and honorary citizens (page 4).

Asphinxia has been blessed with the HQs of three prominent citizne groups. The Spice Trader's Guild (STG) in Arrakis, the National Air Force and Navy League (NAFN) in Thebes and the United Phoenatican Scholar's Voice (UPSV) in Memphis. These groups represent very diverse interest and it is a complement to Asphinxia that we can accomodate them all.
The STG HQ was moved to Arrakis after that city changed it's name from Anyang. Cheiftess, the Guildmaster, said she was pleased with the more central location.
NAFN is a new organisation promoting the production of air and sea units and the development of millitary technology. Raven1er is the founder and leader, Governor Almightyjosh is the co-leader.
UPSV is also a new organisation established by the Mayor of Memphis, Toasty. It aims to have every city equipt with the maximum number of educational facilities.
Citizens with interestes in Trade, the Millitary or Science are invited to join these groups.

The upcoming elections will see some Asphinxian residents gaining positions as national leaders and provincial governors. All national leaders may stay in Asphinxia and retain any titles bestowed upon them by the Governor. Provincial governors are welcome to take the 'key to the city' from thier city if a Mayor and from Thebes if not. This will make you honorary citizens of Asphinxia and welcome to our hospitality anytime. It also gives you the right to use the Red Butterfly!! Yay!

One of our Honorary citizens, BCLG100 has established the province of Mohawkia. It is comprised of the peninsular east of Asphinxia. We can hope that strong ties can be established between our two provinces.

Edition 6 - 28/7

The Party's Over!!
The Grand Banquet of Asphinxia has drawn to a close with the presentaion of the Banquet Awards. These awards were for contribution to various elements of the Banquet such as singing and speech making. The overall award was jointly won by Stuck_As_a_Mac (the Banquet organiser) and CivGeneral (one of the most active participants, very difficult to get him to leave!!). The Banquet was a HUGE success and was one of the most visited locations on the globe while it was on!! The banquet lasted just over 3 1/2 days, now that's a party!! Anyone with suggestions for future events (once we get over these hangovers) can post the ideas in the Asphinxia thread.

The NAFN and UPSV, two Asphinxia baced citizen groups, have decided not to merge after a preliminary poll found little support for the move. Most members felt the groups did not have enough in common. The two groups remain strong supporters of one another and contain many common members.

Competition?
A new newspaper for Phoenatica has been established, as well as editions of an off-world newspaper being sent here. The Phoenatican Daily Tribune has been requesting articles for it's first edition, to be released next month (there's no accounting for the naming of newspapers). Editor, OctavianX, plans to use many forms of media. An Apoltonian newspaper, The Jungle Gazette, has been sending copies here via the S.E.T.I. program. The Governor pointed out that niether paper is primarialy a daily news carrier and niether caters so specifically to Asphinxia's needs.

Debate is open for the Presidential, Department Leader and Governor positions. Asphinxians running are advised to submit answers to the inquisitor's quetions and submit questions of their own (especially hard ones!!). Unfortunately, while the inquisitor's questions give a good overview of each candidate, more quetions are needed to determine policy platforms and future outlooks from candidates. The Governor would welcome any hard hitting or friendly questions be posed to everyone, or even just to him in the Thebes thread (Almightyjosh is Mayor of Thebes).

The next edition of the Asphinxian Times will be in about a week, as the printing press has broken down. It is understood that the old press could not keep up with demand for the Times, popular throughout the nation and especially in Memphis, where 95% of adults read every edition. The new press to be installed on the 5th will be able to cope with demand. Sorry.
