Do you guys ever build subs? I never find the time and need too (i play on Regent mostly) because they are completely useless if you don't get Magellens Voyage. I meam, three movement points c'mon!!! Now Nuclear subs, for some reason i find the need to build these ;)

I actually kind of like having them as a picket screen: put them in the right place and you can herd the AI's transport fleets into them.

I don't build them since AI knows where each one of my unit is anyway.

I edited all ships to move one extra space and I like to use them like Richard as a picket to get through too my coast. THey work good for that cuz as we all know the AI can't see subs (cough, cough)

i build them for late game inteligence only you dont need a huge number and you can see all waterpaths to your country even if its large.

I'd build nuclear subs, but that's when I can actually get my hands on some uranium!

Not invisible units. I've had the AI blunder into these enough times to convince me that Soren made them forget about the presence of invisible units.

Whether this is true or not, the effect seems to be so: when I use them as a picket, it's generally in the areas that I expect the AI to land. So it doesn't matter whether they see or not; they still move there. And the point is, a sub may not be fast, but in a fixed position it doesn't matter, just as in WWII.

And consider it training for PTW, where I am sure all of you sub doubters will suddenly see the light...

I make both subs, but heavily modified. Extra movement for all modern naval units, make the regular sub very high attack, low defense, and increase the nuke's capacity to 4. You've got yourself a fast attack sub and a nuclear boomer.

Nuke subs only - to carry tactical nukes. Not that I use them, just something to do to pass the time. :)

Come to think of it - never use any nuke yet in any of my games. Hmmmm.... :mischief:

Before you have AEGIS only subs can see subs, and I have bumped into enemy subs enough times to want subs, even though my staunch refusal to edit the game means that I have to travel in bursts of three squares (why with railroads can you get from Spain to Siberia in a split second by land but from Spain to Mexico by sea takes decades?) My other use for subs is to plant them close to enemy islands or ports to watch traffic in and out - they are not seen and not required to be moved out of enemy territory and you have to keep a lookout for those transports...

I like them, because they can spot enemy subs. Never seen one though... But it's a leftover from my CTP-habits.

I use them to use them as pickets and to cruise around the AI's naval borders to just 'check up' on how the AI ships are doing

I always have a strong navy in my games and that might be because all ships and subs have been modded a lot. The "moderne" ships from destroyer and on wards have either 7 or 8 moves and I've also added the TypeXXX sub wich I use as a modern privateer. Battle ships have been modded so that they can carry cruise missiles, generally all ships have been boosted so that they are worth while to build.

I never build ships unless I have to - the naval batles are so ridiculous that i just don't bother.

Yep! :goodjob:

or should that be -

Yep... :(

Absolutely! I always build nuclear subs, and load them w/ tactical nukes, to patrol and surround the other civs. If I'm in a tight s/r, I have a few transports parked near the enemy's capitall w/ a couple nuclear subs to clear their way; for a first strike to take out their s/s.

After having a Carrier sunk by enemy subs, I've come to appreciate pre-AEGIS units that see subs. Since DDs and aircraft inexplicably suck as sub-hunters in Civ II, that means subs. I've used them as launchers for tac nukes too, but prefer ICBMs - flexibility is king during the sneaky diplomacy of the Modern Age.

Yeah I think your right, I've never question any AI actions when my subs are involved.
