The Barony of Kultis is located in the hills overlooking the Great Eastern Sea, northwest of what is now known as Morgana. The family has dwelt there since time immemorial, protecting the peoples from the outlaws that once roamed the hills. There were once pressures from neighboring Lancre, but they were resisted, and the two families have since become friends, to the point that the lands of Kultis (and Mara) are often included in the broad term "District of Lancre"
The County of Mara is a fertile grassland located at the head of the broad valley that sweeps south and East from a point between Morgana and Bavaria. It, too, was once coveted by Lancre, but noble intermarriages in the past brought it into the sphere of the Barony, which helped protect it from takeover. The current Count of Mara is childless, and on his death, the title will pass to the Baron of Kultis.
The Current Baron of Kultis (and soon to be Count, for the Count is aged and ill) is the middle child of a large family. His two elder brothers were killed fighting the marauders and bandits that once roamed their beautiful hill country, while his younger siblings have chosen to become priests, or to seek their fortunes in other lands.
The Baron was fostered out at an early age, as is the custom, and was raised by several of the noble families of Fanatika. He has, therefore, close ties with the Seabrakes, and the Aegir, as well as with Cupertina and Lancre. While still a fosterling, as well as during his later wanderings, he became known as a peaceful philosopher. He is said to dream of a time when Fanatika will be known for its cultural achievements as well as its warriors' prowess.
Those who fear he is soft, however, are soon taught the error of their ways. For while he is gentle with those in his care, is is ruthless towards his enemies. While he yearns for peace, he understands the necessity of war, particularly in thse brutish times.
