Reform the RPG

I think the rpg is in need of a major overhaul. Note this is both a citizens discussion and for the rpg.

The reason for the overhaul is this:

Banks - Banking not discovered
Stock Exchange - Economics not discovered
Knights - Chivalry not yet discovered

The rpg was meant to be played along with the game, not for it to advance farther than the game itself.

I undertand where you're coming from Fionn, but I don't know how exciting sitting in a hut, waiting for the sun to rise so I could go hunt and gather would be. The middle ages were much more fun. As far as the stock market goes, good luck getting away from yuppies...

a) this discussion belongs to the rpg forum. if we move citizens groups only dealing with the rpg there, also those discussion should be mooved there

b) most of the knights dont even belong to the rpg. most of them were created by citizens groups of the actual demogame (fanatikan order). also, knighthood is something which in rl was invented far before chivalry, only the armor-lance-shield thing was added later ;-) but i must admit we are a bit earliy with that

c) the banking is used as central transaction log and ownership reference for our gold. no other way to do it, except calling it something different with the same function as a bank. so i now propose renaming the banks at the rpg to "gold accounting businesses". would that fit better? btw: also before banking was invented people were counting their money... there were "banks", but they were not "nationwide" or "international". the technology banking of civ3 applies more to the international organized banks imho.

d) if we cut all that out, there wont be a rpg any more as it will loose its fun. bookkeeping would be impossible.

e) i comply to you that building and weaponry technology as well as openly sold goods should comply to the actual game. but this is already discussed at the rpg forum for a few weeks.

1) Their is a RPG rules refinment thread in the RPG forum.

2) I don't know what BCLG or Shaitan did with my idea's to run it this way (all but the bank.... we need tha banks). We don't need the stock exchange yet. Also back in the nomadic times they had many tournments. Those are interesting and is a perfect idea for entertainment in the "cave times."

fionn we have had this conversations many times before and it mainly comes down to if we wait for every advancement then at the moment it would be very boring in the forthcoming ages when tech advancements come more quick itll change but at the moment we are just trying to keep the things in the same age

Doesnt matter it should go by the game, you dont think people were bored back in the old ages with out computers and such, its a fact of life, they did things such as paint or create sculptures or have philosopical debates. the only thing i see is a lottery, horse races, stock exchanges banking, which never took place until the renaissance when currency was finally discovered instead of using shiny peices of metals and seashells on the ground. Knights and such no matter what didnt come about till the middle ages. We are in the Ancient ages for gods sake. If the RPG would go so friggin slow in the ancient ages then stop playing it until as dis says the middles ages comes up because it was better which i have to agree it was but plenty of things great happened in the ancient ages. The money aspect scares me as in this game. Not many people back then cared who had money or not, that was again a renaissance thing when central banking was dicovered. Again the only thing i say is reform the RPG and maybe you guys playing and posting more in the RPG will get your heads out long enough to notice the real game because if the real game loses then the rpg wont be around. At least not till Demogame 3

fionn the most fo the people who post in the rpg also post in the demogame just at the moment the 1st term to be quite honest has been really boring it is starting to get interesting as a war is going on but for the first term we had numerous t/cs with only a few turns in them. now we are nearly at war people will become mor interested more involved in the next demogame i am sure the rpg will be better improved just liek in demogame 3 the actual demogame will have improved some more.

Fionn has a point. He is obviously using the guidelines that the RPG people set up to use as standards.

i explained it in chat. I wont play something thats got a modern mix to it when the idea of role play is to get into the game many have seem to not realize that. So what if it was boring be creative come up with things from the Ancient Era. Research what they did back then, instead of saying oh its boring lets spice it up cuz im bored. That is a sad excuse for a good idea of role playing

I totally agree with Fionn, I tried using bartering until the discovery of currency, and held the History department off until writing. But I guess not everyone is willing to just use the techs at hand, it would adhire us to the demogame a bit more, but that would also mean that most, if not all, business would close (no money) and many other things would have to be revised. I'd sudgest to keep it as it is but beging slowing down changes, ie let's not get into the middle ages (more than we already are) when we are in the middle of ancient times.

I totally agree. We should fix the RPG. Just as the RPG should not affect the demo game, the demo game should not affect the RPG.

If someone owns a tile that gets a city built on it then the owner should get alot of gold since his land is now worth so much more!

BTW, we don't have stocks in the RPG we have shares.

If you don't like the RPG you are free to not play. Just don't stand outside crying that we're doing it wrong. We're having fun. And we're not afraid to have a !

What a load of ________ (fill in the blank). The original idea of the RPG was to play along with the game. Nobody cared about owning land until the middle ages and then even then cities were already in place by then, what a rediculus(sp) notion that someone should get paid gold for land a city is built on, as ive selling the land was crazy enough. Did anybody pay attention to history class, land was givin to the nobles they didnt buy it. As for shares, its still crazy. I relaize to some that the ancient era wasnt as cool as the middle ages but so what get over it. this banking system is nuts, crazy, and many other words come to mind to describe. I may be getting a bit too attached to the idea that the rpg can be altered to make it both exciting and fun, as its supposed to be a supplement to the demogame. Not have a life of its own.

You are right Fionn. But I believe that the RPG has evolved much too quickly for the parent idea to confine it. All the "should've beens" and "was supposed to be's" won't bring it back to the days of drawing pictures in the dirt with a stick. Maybe we should halt it's growth (if that's possible) until the Demogame catches up, but we're not going to be able to "timewarp ourselves" back to 1275 B.C. Keep in mind that the Demogame is running about 1000 years ahead of a real history line also.

Land was given to the nobles they didn't buy it. And who gave them the land? The did. But we don't have a bloody to hand out land to the nobles now do we? What not? Because our country is populated by a bunch of little boys who'd rather sit in a Great Library reading about the adventures and accomplishments of other great nations. If only we had men who would don the chain mail and take up the sword...

I'm really missing something here Fionn. To me the RPG is exciting and fun. Since the RPG sub-forum has more posts than the other other 3 demo game sub-forums combined I'd say I'm not the only one who enjoys it.

Mind you I'm not really into RPG stuff though I did spend most of Saturday playing D&D. Killed 2 Orcs single handedly while my companions laid near by in a deep magical sleep. Later I got knocked unconscious in a fight with alot of Goblins. Guess my point is that RPG doesn't have to follow reality, now does it?

You are missing the point, altho you have made one point ive been making all along. That people are more into the RPG than the actual demogame. To quote donsig Since the RPG sub-forum has more posts than the other other 3 demo game sub-forums combined I'd say I'm not the only one who enjoys it. Point made.
