Hi guys,

Anybody bought and/or played Civ: The boardgame yet? I bought it last Friday, but haven't played it yet (lack of free time; how I am going to squeeze in PTW, I haven't got a clue yet, but I will!!).

I did read the rules, but had some questions about it. Like, whether all players can move in every turn and buy units and settlements in every turn.

And of course, I'm very much interested in any experiences anybody has playing the boardgame!!

Thanx,

Mlar.

You are not alone in questioning various aspects of the rules, and the specific questions you have raised have been already discussed in some detail. Eagle will be publishing errata for the game soon and we are all hoping that this includes clarifications to the rules.

As for the boardgame itself, I think Eagle did an excellent job in capturing the feel and dynamic of the Civ3 computer game without overburdening the players with too many rules. By "feel" I think the boardgame effectively captures the Civ trademark gameplay of exploration, trade, resources, conquest, diplomacy, city management, and of course scientific research. The physical quality of the game itself is also outstanding, with a huge game board and over 800 finely detailed pieces.

One thing I find really cool about the gameplay, is that unlike other strategic conquest boardgames that I have played, units from different players can coexist peacefully in the *same* zones (kind of like the Civ3 right-of-passage dip agreement), but of course at any time the peace may turn to war!

By the way, I have created a tech tree for the civ boardgame which can be found on my website at: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pmm1/games/games.html

Thanx! I didn't know there was a forum at eagle games. I'll check in there!

Is this board game anything like the old board game (I still have that lying around somewhere) or is this a totally new board game... I'm wondering whether or not I should buy it, 'cause the old game was a bit of a disappointment to me actually....

No, this is a boardgame based on the Civ 3 computer game endorsed by Firaxis! You can get more details at the Eagle Games website as well as download a pdf of the rules. See http://www.eaglegames.net/

Years ago I too bought the original civilization boardgame (still have it actually) and I can tell you that Civilization: The Boardgame is a totally different game.

By the way, the founder of Eagle Games (Glenn Drover) is a very active member in the Eagle forums and has been very helpful answering questions about the game.
