Just so you know, when I loaded up the game it turned out the cheatmode was still on, even though it doesn't show up on the score.

(You ave no idea how tempting those options have been so far, but a game cheated is nt a game at all.)

Anyhow my game has started out well. I found the Americans early on with my NONE archer, and after exchanging techs with them, they decided to attack my archer outside washington. I won leaving washington open. Obiging I found that the city was the only ones the americans had and destroyed them.

Other points of interst are the same thing happening with an aztec city, allowing me to take a quarter of their cities before declaring peace. (Why does the AI attack you with warriors?).
And I found the perfect site for a SSC. One fish, two whales and gold. Most of the sqaures are ocean but there are a few hills, plins and mountains for sheilds.

It's only 300 (or 400) AD at the moment, and my empire streatches from the pole to the equator, coming top in almost everything. :) There are only the Zulus (whom have not met). The aztecs with their few cities on the pole, and the mongols who invariablly still throw units at my cities walls ever other year.

So far it is has been a good game. (even if I am plagued with rebelion), and i have done extremely well considering I prefer to play on Prince all the time.

I was so excited to see some green squares that I started playing right away!

First I did some general map-clicking to find out info - then I did the wrong things with that info, but that will be told below...

We are on Continent 3. We are way to the East of everything. The water to the south is the main Ocean. There is a peninsula to the north. Most of the land is South and East. This continent looks biggish, and there may be other CIvs on it which should be elminated fast. I also see a Continent 15. That's a lot of land areas. It looks like Maps and LH will be necessary to fast conquer. First step is the hut and then decide strategy.

BC
4000 Move Settler South
3950* Hut: Horseback R. Looks like Conquest.
3900 Settler to SW - Fish. This will be the capital. Work Buffalo for Size 1 or Horse to explare? Hut popping is too dicey. I will build. [OOPS!!]

3500 Mongols destroyed by Celts
3200 Settler. =>horse. Settler moves West looking for terrain.

2800 Hamburg founded.
2750* Horse in Berlin.

1650 Gov: Monarchy. Science: 9 turns. We need to boogie.
1550* We break treaty. Horse attacks Phalanx. Not yet vet.
1450 Their warrior immolates self on our fortified hill warrior.
1400 BW=> Writing
1300 Archer kills 2 phalanx.
1250 Barbs near Konigsberg.
1200 Leipzig builds settlers.
1150* Hamburg builds settlers.
1100 Berlin builds Trireme. Armagh found. Heidelberg founded. Nuremburg founded.
1000 Celts attack horse=>vet. Munich builds settlers. Writing =>Currency (need Trade for Wonder building because we are so slow). Cologne founded.
--9 cities, 6 Techs. (14 bk/turn) building roads for defence and trade.
**********************************************************
The loss of exploring time from 3850 to 3200 was disastrous. By the time I find the Celts they are too big to take out quickly, so it turns into a long war. I should have hut-popped with a horse and tried to overrun the other civs on the continent, then finish up overseas later when I have more tech and a bigger civ.

-more to come

I wandered to get a delay so I could pop the pictured hut in 3850. Was rewarded with: .............25g. :p

I will play this game, my first gotm ever!

I downloaded the save file yesterday and played somewhat recklessly up till 1000AD.

Here is a brief log.

3950 Berlin founded one square to the southwest of the starting position, using whales
Some units found in huts

2000 2 new cities founded
1800 American city of New York destroyed
1050 Form Monarchy (forgot to do that earlier)
0850 Peace treaty with the evil Celts who pay 150g tribute

~500 Demand lots of tribute from Celts who gladly pay
0400 Leipzig builds Hanging Gardens
0350 American city of Philadelphia destroyed
0175 Leipzig builds Colossus
0125 Republic established

980 Carthage pays tribute
1000 War with evil Celts, Armagh captured

My empire in 1000AD

27 cities, 5,990,000 population

Units: Notably the Mighty Cavalry with 30 units, half attacking the celts and half approaching Carthagians and Zulus.

I have used the Carthagians as trading partners early in the game but I will switch to the Aztecs when I get better boats and Magellans. In fact, I have avoided to research navigation so that I would get high trade bonuses for as long as possible. It may look a bit silly, but I am using triremes to ship the mighty cavalry to the Carthagian continent.

We have 45 techs so far and we switched back to Monarchy to make the warmonging easier. The SSC is celebrating anyway and we get new techs every 3 turns with the 70% Monarchy science rate.

We are supreme but atrocious.

Wonders: HG, Colossus, MPE, Mike, Cope, Shake, Leo, Newton

I haven't descided between spaceship and conqest yet. However, my goal is to finish with a big powerful empire before 1750AD.

I've almost finished, and even though it is 1900 already I have hardly done anything. I should never have let the Zulus expand so much on that other landmass. The Aztecs are confined to a small pice of landand only a have a few cities, same to with the mongols, but it looks like I may have to send a experditionaly force to Zulu land to take hal their empire and regain contolr of the world.

I have nearly every turn saved from the beiginning so I may do a full timeline if I can be bothered. I prob. will I have corsework to do so it is a near certainty.

I think the carthaginians were destroyed by the zulus, and they were the only other civ on that landmass. I'll have to wait till Lespiz finshes Apollo before I can cjheck that though.

I traded maps extensively when I got map making and Marco Polo's so I knew evertything that was going on. The Zulus were not very powerful in my game but rather hostile. I have played a few more turns now, it's 1400AD, and evertything is under control. I wiped out the Zulus, the Celts and the Carthagians. Only the Mongols with one city and the Aztecs with three cities remain. I think I will launch into space, that would be fun. Normally I only play conquest games.

I have switched to democracy and started trading with the Aztecs.

I played till 1 AD this weekend.

I founded Berlin at the starting location, built a warrior and then switched to settler. Huts were less than helpful. I got 4 of them early on and they gave me Mapmaking, Archer, Horseback riding, and barbarians. The unneeded techs delayed Monarchy tremendously. The barbarians killed my Warrior. My undefended city of Leipzig barely scaped a barbarian take over. Leipzig is just Southeast of Berlin with access to Buffalo, fish, and Whale. It is my science city.

I Met Americans early on. They demanded Mapmaking outright. I refused hoping to trade instead. They declared war and attacked
my Archer first with a warrior who got killed in attack and then with an Archer. I carefully retreated to a hilltop on a narrow (3 tiles wide) strech of land and fortified. After their Archer also got killed in attack they did not attack me anymore. The strategic location of my Archer kept them from coming into my area and allowed me to expand without defense.

Just recently I sent a diplomat into American territory and subverted size 1 Boston. I have not yet met anyone else. I am still expanding. I have 11 cities and Colossus. No one else has any wonders yet though Aztecs are working on Pyramids.

The AI will always ask to trade technology before demanding that you give them technology.

My first GOTM!

I played until 1 AD. I managed to kill the Americans easily, but found the Celts too late. I found a nomad en route to the Celts and built a city to stop all of their units from coming into my territory.

I found the Aztecs after they built their Pyramids and managed to capture their city which had built the Pyramids. I'm not sure if I'll be able to hold it though, since I only have a horseman and a chariot there and they are far away from my other cities.

Recently I built 2 triremes for exploring. The first one I accidently sunk. :( The second one I loaded with a diplomat and ventured to another land I found a nomad, built a city and found the Carthiginians(I think). I managed to incite a revolt in one of their cities, but it only had 1 warrior.

I am behind in wonder production and havn't managed to build any wonders yet, even in my SSC.

Hanging Gardens, of course

Nice log, Cliff. Other descriptions interesting as well. If you guys would like some Deity action, please visit Civ2 Democracy. It's 460AD, and we are about to build Mike's. We need help with everything over there, Rioting, Trade, Diplomats, and Marco Polo.

This is a lesson in bad luck, and how to make it worse. The first Hut was $25, then a supported Horse, then Scrolls of Warrior Code. At 2150BC, discovered CerBur, but no choice Monarchy. At 1550, surprised by a Mongol, we accept Maps and give them CerBur, hurting our Monarchy research. 1350, an American Horse is an ugly surprise outside the new city of Konigsberg, we again exchange foolishly and give Map for Masonry, daydreaming of Pyramids. At 1300 we discover Currency, but there is no option for Trade nor Monarchy! At 900BC the despotic riots begin. At 350BC recovery begins with the Hanging Gardens, and at 225BC we finally form our Monarchy. 12 cities, 12 tech.

20AD Cheating Mongols die. Both Archers bloody.

I can't imagine finding the time to finish in 20 days. :(

I wanted to build the maximum spaceship, I have never done that before. It was launched in 1670AD and landed 11 years later. In retrospect it was not worth the effort to build those 100+ freights while researching towards space flight. My empire was too small for this so I had to leave most cities small with few city improvements and little land improvement. I did some catching up while waiting for the spaceship to land though.

Here is another mini-log from 1000AD to AC.

1060 Carmarthen captured
1080 Leipzig builds Bach, Navigation disocvered
1100 Carthagians pay 300g tribute

1200 War with Zulus, Ulundi and Hlobane captured
1240 Revolution
1260 Leipzig builds Eiffel Tower
1260 Frederick elected Chancellor
1260 Zimbabwe destroyed, Lighthouse lost
1260 Zulu civilization destroyed
1280 Railroad discovered
1360 Corporation discovered
1400 Leipzig discoveres Cure for Cancer
1480 Automobile discovered
1570 Flight discovered
1630 Space Flight discovered
1640 Berlin builds Apollo Program
1670 Fusion Power discovered
1670 Maximum Spaceship launched
1674 Mongols declare war
1674 Karakorum captured
1674 Mongol civilization destroyed
1675 Berlin builds Darwin
1675 Future Tech discovered
1678-1680 UN, Oracle, Sun Tzu, Great Wall, Adam Smith, Statue of Liberty built
1678 Aztec city of Teotihuacan (with Pyramids) subverted
1679 Tlateloco subverted
1681 AC

Just some interesting notes:

* Hoover Dam was not built and no factory was ever built
* No supermarket was built, refrigeration was never discovered
* I got a free future tech from Darwin's Voyage
* The Eiffel Tower was useful in this game

Oh, the democracy game! I might help with Marco Polo, it is my favorite wonder. I like all the dilpomacy options in civ2. Not only will the AI build cities and wonders for you, they will do your research and collect taxes for you as well!

Cliff, I am impressed by your launching a space ship in 1670. Great job!

I have played till 1700 now. As soon as I exchanged a few maps with AI, I decided to finish by space ship. I destroyed Americans and took all their land. Mongols destroyed Celts. I subverted the Mongol city of Kashghar which is built near a bottle neck. Mongols have only 5 cities (including the two they captured from Celts). Mongols are extremely well behaved for Mongols. They are building wonders and have not attacked me even once. I cannot believe this!

I am heavily trading with Carthaginians and Aztecs. Zulu have only 2-3 cities and have been at war with just about everyone else. I would have taken them over if they were not so far away. My portion of the continent has all the cities I am going to build. I also have cities in three near by islands and looking for more unsettled land at this point.

The AI has been super active in building wonders in this game. Aztecs started Pyramids early and beat me to it. They also got Hanging Gardens. All other ancient wonders with the exception of Great Library are built by someone. I only have Colosssus among the ancients. The AI has these wonders as well: Sun Tzu, King Richard and Magellan. Besides Colossus I have Marco, Leo, Michelangelo, Copernicus, Newton. Bach and Adam Smith are around the corner. I am currently researching Railroad.

I wonder if I am in the same game -- I'm at 1060 AD, with four wonders built -- non of the ai's have even started a wonder!

I'm still in Monarchy but they're all despots -- true to form going slow I guess.

I might not even get this game finished!
I'll have about two days at the weekend in which to play from about 1000AD.
Plus there is the fact that civ2 causes my pc to crash about every fifteen minutes which is REALLY frustrating.(even with the autosave on its still annoying)

You may need the Indeo drivers update. Ask some questions in the Tech Support forum...

I am with you, the AI has not been aggressive with respect to wonders this game. I think that all they have in my game is GL, MPE and Lighthouse, while I have Pyramids, Mike's, Leonardo, STWA, Copernicus, and JSBach. Plus, I am nearly completed with Isaac Newton and Magellan.

What's even stranger is that I established an embassy with the Zulu about 1780 or so. They only have one city! :crazyeye: What's up with that?

You let them get MarcoPolo? For shame... That would answer your question about the Zulus, for one...

My game started bad - I had a Chariot from the visible hut, but lost it to a Barb Horse less than ten turns later! I think I was on a hill too. Several Scrolls of Ancient Wisdom greatly delayed my tech path to Monarchy, and I waffled way too long on getting started with a ScienceCity. Luckily, the Celts took out the Mongols early on and I found and plugged the bottleneck to the south. I was out all last week, but I hope to make up time this week with the holidays (of course, there's always the HoneyDo list waiting for me...).

Generally, it seems that the AI is very passive (although they continually are declaring war on me!) this game with respect to expansion and wonders (as I mentioned in my last post).

Also, the research seems slow. Perhaps because the purple civ (Mongols) were knocked out so early? Does anyone replace the key civ when they are knocked out?

I wonder if I am in the same game -- I'm at 1060 AD, with four wonders built -- non of the ai's have even started a wonder!

I am with you, the AI has not been aggressive with respect to wonders this game.
I am surprised as well. I do not recall the AI ever being so aggressive in wonder building. I have played till 1850 and the AI has built the following wonders: All ancients except Colossus and Great Library, Sun Tzu, King Richard, Magellan, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel tower, Darwin, and Suffrage. That is 12 in total! In contrast I have 11 wonders. Carthaginians just started UN which forced me to start it too. I hope to be able to beat them to it.

In 1850 I have 40 cities, only a few more than the 33-34 I had in early 1700s. I have spent most of the time on creating new trade routes, improving the terrain, and building infrastructure. I have many factories, offshore platforms, mass transits, universities, supermarkers, and stock exchanges. I have just started building airports. I am currently researching Rocketry. There are only a few techs left to reserach. I have all the cities I am going to build on the main continent. I have 8 cities in nearby islands and still looking for new sites to build.

Mongols were model neighbors till early 1700s. Then they started behaving like Mongols! Fortunately, besides subverting their city of Kashgar near a bottleneck I built a fort there. They kept throwing Knights, Crusaders, Cavalry, and Artillery against the fort. I killed all of them without a single casualty. As soon as I had tanks and howitzers I attacked and took well defended Karakorum. My senate forced a cease fire and Mongols have been model neighbors since.

Aztecs have landed a settler on my continent who is just wandering around. Otherwise they have been peaceful. They have 5 big cities on their continent. I am heavily trading with those. They have built more wonders than the rest of the AI.

Carthaginians were also peaceful and my second trade partner till just a few turns ago when they launched a surprise attack against one of my 3 cities in an island south of their continent. They captured the city and stole Advanced flight. I took the city back within a couple of turns thanks to my navy. But I am worried about the loss of Advanced flight when no one else even has flight.

Zulu are still in the game with 2-3 cities. They too are at war with me though it is an inactive war.
