Kris (aka Sykosys) sent me a statement from Firaxis which he got from Infogrames. Here it is:

The following is a statement directly from Firaxis. I hope this helps:

********************************************************************

Thank you for writing about your concerns with the Civilization III:
Play the World product.

Unfortunately, we too have discovered that the released product, for some users on some setups, does not successfully deliver the expected multiplayer gaming experience. These users may encounter sudden crashes or unplayable delays while playing in an Internet multiplayer game. We understand your frustration and want you to understand that we are determined and committed to create a high quality gaming experience worthy of the Civilization name.

Fortunately, we have discovered the problems causing many of these issues. We are working to create a software update that will fully address the most commonly reported problems with Internet play, including unusual lags and crashes. To demonstrate our commitment to quality and to prevent further frustrations, we will not release this update until our quality assurance has fully and completely tested it. Please monitor the Civ3.com page for more information as to the availability of this software update.

The planned software update will not address other problems that you may experience that are not related to the software, such as:
- playing from behind a firewall. Please see
http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml
for troubleshooting information on firewall setups.
- playing from a slow Internet connection. If you or players in your game have unusually high ping rates, the communication between players and the pace of the game may slow to an unplayable level. This behavior is a common problem for all Internet-based multiplayer games.
- playing with a pirated copy of the game. "Cracked" or "warez"
versions of the product, whether in your hands or in the hands of a player connected to your game, can cause unpredictable behavior.

In the meantime, if you are still unable to host or join an online
multiplayer game, we ask that you continue to enjoy the additional single player content and scenario editor contained in the expansion pack, and to be patient while we continue work on delivering you the opportunity to truly Play the World.

I don't think we need to wait too long for the patch.... :)

I'll take that for an apology. :)

Wait for the patch and go to the babe threads in the meantime...

Hmm, I wonder if they are going to fix the NAT problem in this patch by going to direct IP connection instead of through GameSpy. Worked in Civ 2.

Far as I know, the IP connection is supposed to be coming. We hope it works! :)

Kris.

I'm just going to wait until the patch before I even attempt multiplayer...

Please don't take your time, Firaxis.

Does it baffle anyone else besides me that we can have intense multiplayer games that are truly simultaneous (e.g. Warcraft III, Return to Castle Wolfenstein), yet a seemingly simple turn-based game has lagged behind (for many years) in the multiplayer arena?

It has always seemed to me that playing against other players would be much more satisfying than against AI's (just look at all the threads about how the AI is stupid/cheats/sucks), so you would think that this area would get more attention.

"Far as I know, the IP connection is supposed to be coming. We hope it works! "

How much do you think they are going to charge us for that? sounds like another $29.00 upgrade. that means I spent $110 dollars for a PC game. I thought $60 bucks in 1994 was a lot for Ultima VII.

I think I understand why addiction is a sickness, just ask any civ player!

I doubt they will charge for the upgrade I don't think there complete block heads when it comes to marketing. I think they realise if they charged for the upgrade they would push their fan base over the edge. The Fan base is already mad about PTW, I think at this point they just want to quell the bad feelings.

Most likely, it's another patch. :)

Not really. The technology is different. In an RTS, a fair number of the messages can be lost or arrive out of order and not have it substantially effect the outcome. In a TBS game, every single message should be important and must be processed in order. This means waits and retries until it gets synched up.

I believe that the Firaxis folks are acting in good faith to do the right thing.
