Hmm, I didn't know this about tech brokering...

I'm playing a deity game as the Ottomans, and I have been in no wars at all so far. And I recently entered the Industrial age, as all other civilizations on the map.
It's a large map, and there are currently 7 civilizations left in the game, only France has been destroyed.

I just built the Theory of Evolution, and I got Atomic Theory and Electronics. Now I wanted to trade some to get me some cash and techs (especially Industrialization). I started by checking out what I could get from the Celts.

They would give me:
- Ivory, Spices, Communism, Industrialization, World Map, 152 Gold, and about 180 Gpt.

Then I checked what I could get from the Mongols (I always check before I do the first trade, as I want to trade it to the one who gives me most, first). The mongols would give me: Dyes, Communism, Indust, WM, 200 something GPT, and 194 Gold.

Then I noticed that Egypt and America didn't have Scientific Method, so I traded that to them, getting some old techs like Democracy and Navigation. Now I went back to the Mongols and the Celts to check on their deals. And I don't know why I changed the GPT values, but I did. And I noticed that I could now increase the GPT values pretty much. I could increas the Celts GPT to 200 Gpt, and the Mongols Gpt to 249 GPT. So the conclusion is:

If more civs can buy a tech from you. The more are you gonna get.

sounds very interesting! i always have found that i get less for techs if only 1 person wants it, but this never occoured to me! thankyou!

I got 469 or something like that from one tech...
I think it was ecology...

Good boy!!!!! :)

I never knew that either, although it makes sense. The more Civs needing to know a specific tech, the more valuable that tech is. Good to know... thanks Grey Fox. :goodjob:

Here is a bit of a screenshot that shows the most amount of money I have ever been offered. 1410 gold per turn would have come in handy but at the time I was the only one with modern armor so I had to turn her down.

Hmm, this discovery might change my tech brokering strategy! Before I thought that a tech is worth less if more civs have it...

I'm currently playing a modded game in which I significantly increased tech prices in order to make the game fit a more realistic timeframe, and even in early industrial age I was able to upto 800gpt from the English! My research for a long time (until I went to war with England) was "sponsored" by France, England and America- at 100% science I was making upto 2000gpt, so currently even though I have much fewer trade deals, my treasury has 65000 gold! It IS worth less if more people have the tech.

But if you are the only one having a tech, lets say writing. And only 2 out of 8 other civs have Alphabet. Then you will get a better deal for Writing, if you first trade Alphabet to all the other civs.

What is the best way to determine what techs the other civs have?

By the diplomacy screen, look what techs you can trade to them, and what techs you can trade from them.

(Welcome, McGlock!)

Woody - Is that unmodded? Is that a huge map? I am just trying to figure out the conditions that could have happened in. I couldn't have said no to that deal, personally. Even if I was the only one with modern armor. With that kind of cash you could build a lot more than anyone else, that's for sure. : )

Unmodded game, huge map, monarch skill level. Egypt had so much cash to throw at me because they had the market cornered on two or three luxery items in a 16 player game.

Thanks for the info, Grey Fox. I'll be sure to try to make good use of it. :)

Now that I think about it, I may have been wary of a such a deal. They may not have had the money for that for too long and gone to war with you. Unless that's what you want of course!! :groucho:

thats an incredible ammound of money! how much gpt would egypt be making or able to make to make such an offer? its wonderful! hehehe

It may have been dipping into it's savings also. If it had like 28,000 gold, they could just pay him out of that. I assume that's the case.
