uh....ouch! what a starting position

The starting position is great. Its whats around it that is not so great ;)

I suggest that Map Making factor into early planning.

Hmmm tough choice -- pop the hut & hope for a Non unit (-- but is there a chance of getting a advanced tribe in the non optimal site?) or build Athens right away & then pop the hut -- maybe get a supported unit?

Duh question number 1 -- will there be anyone researching anything BUT Alphabet at the start? (Just think you could get Poly in just a few turns... of course the hut could give the letters, but...)

Real question number one -- will anyone research writing (to get a dip & buy a boat when the barbs come) as their main plan for exit?

Looks good Smash -- I want to see how Narz enjoys this one.

Well, since I do not have much time to play the civ2 gotm, mainly due to study and the release of a multiplayer expansion for a game I won't mention here ;), I was actually, like Jayne, planning to play this gotm and all following ones as OCC's from now on.

I guess this will be a tough one to start my OCC-streak with.

btw, Old and Slow, I thought that getting an advanced tribe in 4000 BC was impossible. I'm not 100% sure though, please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Who made this map?!
Could be an interesting game though!
Maybe i'll get time to finish this one!
Actually its a pretty good site for a first city what with the whales and musk ox and all but it won't grow too big.

Quick question: are the sexes of the opponents ALWAYS the same?
I always get hannibal of the carthaginians but in the last gotm it was dido of the carthaginians. (and she sneak attacked me!)

I decided in the end I would try an OCC. Up to 1890 already and doing OK, though I don't know if it's enough to get a Spaceship. I've done a log this time too!

Definitely settle! This starting point is rough, and would only be made rougher if you get an advanced tribe without the fish in the city radius!

Hey, Smash, did Narz give you this idea? :)

Lighthouse just became an infinitely more important wonder!

Definite OCC - thanks Smash! Nice Christmas present!

If Barbs have to land before attacking, putting one unit on the extra Plain tile will keep Barbs away completely...

No problems on growth for OCC - get Seafaring early for Harbors, then Engineer the city radius and Plains to Grass (if there's a shield there?) and the MuskOx to Buffalo. Should be able to get to size 23, with 7 shields up to Explosives, then 10 up to Offshore Platform, then 28... and 40+ base trade...

I don't agree! Provided that the advanced tribe will get a palace and become your capital, this advantage of virtually starting with three settlers is bigger than the drawbacks of having one fish square less to use. Expansion is faster and you get to Monarchy faster. Without the fish it will take longer to grow to size 4 but that can easily be cured by a few turns in republic. You need seafaring a little earlier, that's all. When the city is maxed out you can support one less specialist. That isn't a huge disadvantage.

Its a good location for OCC but making contact and sending cargo will be more involved to say the least.

And with that extra land square, you will NOT be safe from sea going barbarians :)

What to do with that extra settler.Gonna be awhile before it can go anywhere.Road and irrigate the square and then maybe join city?..then again it is a non and could be put on the 1st boat built....

You lose the MuskOx tile too...

Is it actually possible to get an advanced tribe on your first turn without having any cities?
It has never happened to me.
One time i saved and then reloaded a LOT of times to see could i get an advanced tribe but it never happened.
Maybe they just don't like me.:crazyeye:

Also i have a feeling that this island is very close to the north pole!
I haven't had achance to play it but that musk ox looks like it could be connected to the north pole.

I had a dip in a fortress in the second tile most of the game. A ship full of barbs came along and sat outside my city for centuries before a Sioux ship came along and destroyed it!

Hmm, this looks interesting. My last two GOTM's I got to around 800AD or so and never finished and submited, this time perhaps I will. This starting position is quite similar to the one in my current NMCC but I'll just take it as flattery ;)

Well, let me download this and have a go at it!

Yeah I’m getting psyched about an OCC with this one as well.

ElephantU -- try to keep some trade notes (I’ll try as well) I’m wondering if our starting trade choices will be similar…

OCC question -- first wonder -- Col, LH or Marco’s?
