Just curious. Judging by the posts, I'd suspect a wide variety of levels..

I just finished an emperor level game and it didn't go well.. I play random maps and random settings.. this time I got 5 civs on a very small land mass.. one lux resource, and no iron.. doh!! :vomit: who knows where the other three were.. anyways.. the game ended when my third best city flipped.. I've seen the "flip" equation on other threads.. but nothing ticks me off more.. anyway.. that game is toast!! ;)

I've tried playing Emperor several times, but I keep going back to Monarch. It just seems to complement the way that I like to play the game.

For me playing Monarch seems to present a good challenge during the Ancient and Middle Ages, but unfortunately by the time I get into the latter parts of the Industrial Age I'm typically either far ahead of everyone or I've built a much stronger civilization than any of the other AI civs (i.e., I have more roads, railroads, factories, infrastructure, etc.). And that means that my civilization is much better protected and defended and is more resilient if attacked so that in the long run no single AI civ is going to be able to defeat me (they'd all have to gang up on me at the same time).

So I wish there was a level where I could play Monarch during the first half of the game and Emperor during the last half.

I play mostly on emperor now and win about 50% of my games on it. I hope to try for deity soon. I dont think it will be much fun since I think the advantages take away the fun but I still want to beat it at its best.

I dont like losin so i play Warlord

I used to be wimpy and always play chieftan.

Eventually I moved up to Regent and haven't looked back. The fact that you have to plan your game makes it more challenging. Whereas before, on chieftan, I used to do anything that seemed right, I'd win easily, and get bored in the process.

Once I won a scenario that I made on regent or monarch, but I've never won at these levels on a vanilla game, though I've tried a few times. So I went back to chieftain and warlord on small maps. After winning a couple of times, I moved back to regent recently, but I have yet to win a regent game on a standard game.

I try to play Monarch mostly. But sometimes -- especially after a series of not-so-good games -- I might switch down to a lower level for a more instantly pleasing win fix.

But generally Monarch, because it challenges me enough for my current skill level. I think if I wasn't feeling at least slightly challenged by AI enemies then I wouldn't stand up to much when facing a human player. So that's why I don't mind getting humbled every now and then -- I learn from it. (Cue misc BORG reference.)

All right i admit it, im a cheiftan-level player, but i'm almost ready for warlorrd

wassa vanilla game?

I play on regent, its the fairest and most fun

Agreed. I don't like the thought of having to plan every last thing in exacting detail just to keep up with a cheating AI. I play to relax and have fun.

I used to always play on chieftain and warlord. But then I got inspired by all you guys to move up. I play regent a lot now, and it really is fun. Im probably not going up to monarch any time soon because I play barely an hour a day. :(

I'm about to beat my first monarch game (knock on wood), but it was pretty tough. I'm going to have to get better at Monarch before I dare go Emperor.

Warlord, I really want to play monarch...but then again, what's stopping me!? ;)

I am playing on Monarch level with a map size of 256x256.

This is interesnting becaus I like conquest victory and on a large land/water ratio. It takes a long time to build the required army to find and defend

I havent yet won a game on warlord, but I always got bored playing them, regents closer and Im close to my first victoy on it.

Just started playing Emperor recently, only three games, two won and one lost... I did not keep track on enemy progress enough and I was dominated by the Mongols :o

i'm currently playing regent (i usually play standard map with maximum civs and standard settings) but i seem to be able to beat up on the comps way to easy i played on moncarch for a few of the GOTM's and got beaten (though not horribly) on them so i'm thinking of moving to monarch in a few games. i get tired of a game when its starts getting so that i win every single game on the hardest and thankfully that will be a while for me in civ3 :)

There was a thread on this LONG ago... but now.. regent. I've tried deity once or twice... too un-nerving. :) Although, I had a good ice-area game going as Persia (could have used ICS more).
