Ship-of-the-Line? Take a look.

I've been wanting a Ship-of-the-Line for a long time now, but I don't really have the skills to make one. I thought about modifying the Man-o-War, and this is what I've come up with:

SoL.gif

This compares my SoL with the Civ3 Man-o-War.

This one frame probably took me 3 or so hours to do. I'm not sure I could take the time to modify all the different directions for all the different animations. It's simply too arduous.

I just wanted to see what you guys think. Perhaps there's someone who would be willing to copy and paste with a more sophisticated program than mine, once I've modified all the first frames from all the directions of an animation.

This would really make a cool unit if it could come to fruition.

Tell me what you think.

Your version looks great! :)

I can´t stand those little black thingies between the masts on the standard Civ3 ManOWar. Your unit looks much more like a real SoL of the Napoleonic era :goodjob:

I love IT:love: I'm a great fan of the Napoleonic Navies..-=ENGLAND EXPECTS=- I wish you'd (or some one else) would finish this...perhaps removing the civ specific colours from the sails and just keeping
them on the flag.

Ok, I've removed the emblems and added a new angle. Tell me what you think. :D

My SoL next to the Civ3 Man-o-War

I'm going to keep going with modifying every view of the run animation. I'm hoping one of you creative, amazing unit creators out there will take this and run with it (no pun intended ;) ).

BeBro, those "little black thingies between the masts on the standard Civ3 ManOWar" are the cannon, aren't they? And this Ship Of The Line could do with some. Looking good, btw.

On the Man-o-War, you can see the cannon coming out the sides of the "walls". The things between the masts sort of look like cannon, but they're huge. Anyway, on the SoL, the black squares on the sides are the gun ports. The guns are there; the Civ3 unit view is too far zoomed out to see them at that scale. The gun ports alone are only 2x2 pixels. Don't know how I'd put cannon there. ;)

Thanks btw, Zulu. :) When you get praise from the famed Zulu, it's saying something. ;)

Great Job Colonel Kraken :goodjob:. I cant wait for this unit to come out. I myself do not like thoes pretruding guns comming out of the Frigate and the Man-o-War.

And shouldn't it have a crow's nest (possibly more than one)?
No. Ships of war didn't have "crow's nests" - these were usually seen on whaling ships. Warships did have "fighting tops" at the junction of the lower masts and topmasts, but at the scale CK is using they are virtually invisible (looking closely at the pictures, I would say CK has depicted them as well as is possible).

CivIII units and their parts aren't to scale. The cannons should be more visible. The weapons on all the naval units are exagerated so we can see them.

Ok, here's the 3rd preview. I think I've done all the directions necessary for the run animation (the rest can be mirrored). I've modified the first frames only. If someone wants to take it away, awesome.

 You'll be waiting a long time if it's up to me. I won't be the one to do it. It's up to one of the other talented unit creators. But thanks, though.

Thanks, but that leads to . . .

You're quite right, but I like how these look. I would like to make some guns sticking out, but I simply don't know how I'd do it on this unit to make it look right/good. Maybe I'll experiment around and see what I come up with.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Hopefully somebody will pick up this ball and run with it. :goodjob:

CK,

you seem to be able to wipe out those sail emblems pretty quickly, would you mind wiping clean the sails on the privateer? Cleaning up the Skull & Crossbones would allow the privateer to be used as a Corvette. It wouldn't require anything more than that. What do ya say? :)

I actually think this ship should have an emblem, to make it fit with the other ships.

I totally agree, Zulu. I just couldn't think of what to add, so I left it blank for now.

Anyone have any ideas for what symbol(s) to add to one or more of the sails?

Well, I would, but the only problem is I only did it on 5 frames. Do you realize how many total frames there are? I could try a little copy and paste and see how it goes. I'd actually love to do something for the great Kal-el ;) ; I'll just have to experiment a little.

 Hey, thanks. No problem. I left some of the cannon? Thanks for pointing that out! :)

EDIT: Just cleaned it up. Re-posted on my 3rd preview. Look better?
