This is the Early Game spoiler discussion thread for Gotm15-Russia.

Read this introduction carefully to make certain you DO NOT run afoul of the new spoiler rules.

Spoiler threads are divided to allow players to participate in spoiler discussions AFTER they have played their game far enough to pass a certain point in time and have already gained specific knowledge of the game.

Every player must pass two tests in order to be able to view or participate this spoiler thread. These two tests define a dividing line where knowledge and events prior to the line may be discussed but knowledge that you may have from later in the game may not be included.

For Gotm15-Russia:
  • you must have completed play to beyond 10AD AND
  • you must have full map visibility of the entire starting continent

Information in this thread must be from BEFORE BOTH OF THESE EVENTS.

Since this is our first attempt at these progressive spoilers, we should make things a bit clearer for this inaugural event. We probably will not include this detailed list of dos-and-don'ts in future spoiler threads but hopefully these examples will help to set expectations:
  1. You may discuss any game features/easter eggs that you discovered prior to the two cutoffs.
  2. You may post detailed timelines up to 10AD or when you try to LEAVE the continent
  3. You may post map images/screenshots that do not reveal beyond the continent.
  4. You may post screenshots of cool stuff, but try to be courteous and crop and/or downsize the images to less than 800 pixels wide.
  5. You may include any knowledge you gained from popups or Fxx keys prior to the two cut offs
  6. If you think you found a "bug", PM me first to see if we can identify it better by some general methods rather than cluttering up the discussion of the play of the game.
    [/list=1]

    Have fun!!

Alright, I'll kick off the spoiler thread with a goody hut discussion!

As an expansionist civ on a huge continent, how well did your scouts serve you?

I continued my streak of not getting any settlers, but I did get some nice techs. :D

25 gold
Ceremonial Burial
Masonry
Map
The Wheel
Horseback Riding

By 2000 B.C. I was already committed to a space race victory. I'll post my middle age and golden age dates later.

I got about 4 techs from the huts, 50 gold total and no settlers! Would have been helpful to get a settler because China started really well and pumped out lots of quick settlers.

Easter Egg-When you right click plains it says Steppes and in parentheses plains.

I was also surprised by the lakes/seas. I thought that only if sea tiles exist the lake would be salty.

Being expansionist i built 2 additional scouts and went exploring everywhere. Based on the QSC results in the Aztec GTOM 13 I decided on a ICS with early warmongering. But I ended declaring war much later than i have planned as i had a huge terrain to plant cities in.

Goody hut results: Warrior, 25g, Warrior, Maps, Alphabet, Horseback Riding (this i didn't want).

I turned Moscow into a settler factory and the initial build order was 2 scouts, worker (someone praised the effects of the early second worker: they were right IMO), granary, 13 settlers to 1000BC.

I turned research 100% towards the Wheel as i didn't see Japan on the map. I was the first to discover it and i got to tech parity. From that point i was never behind in tech. I also researched Mystcism and Polytheism.

I had a turning point in 1600 BC when i got Horseback riding from a good hut while i was building chariots in all cities. That made me build another ring of cities and changed from a horseman rush to a swordsmen rush.

What did you think about the massive amount of forests? I have never seen something like that. Is it the hand of cracker? Also plains are called steppes. Of course i almost fell of the chair when i built the first custom named town. On the same topic i think that the multitude of seas is fantastic, and i even built a galley. Have you noticed thay you could link the two lakes in the right with the ocean with carefully planned cities. I did only later but it would have been fun.

Dave can you please share early strategies for a SS victory? I cannot imagine how where you committed to SS in 2000BC.

Wow, this map feels more like a large map instead of a standard map.

I had 17 cities and 12 workers by 1000 BC. At 10 A.D. I had 45 cities. I also had 30 horsemen, some of which could have been settlers/cities, and I had 47 workers. Germany is wiped out and I captured the Pyramids from them. Got 1 leader (forbidden palace in Berlin). I'm now mounting my horsemen near China's border.

No settlers from huts. Got ceremonial burial, mysticism and writing, maps and gold. Built 3 extra scouts. Beat the AI to polytheism and monarchy just using 10% science. I'm working on getting Sun Tzu's and will be getting chivalry soon.

I'm not doing as well as I wish I had done. Probably won't get an early victory award. Micromanaging is screwing me up trying not to waste food, and I had 1 turn of disorder in the capital, early in the game.

I could have done with wiping Germany out early, at the start they were the runts of the continent, I think it was the mass of forest between me and them that put me off making an assault, even when they had declared war on me I just ignored them letting my defenders soak up their pathetic attack.

But by 10 AD it was me and Germany who were clearly going to split the continent between us with Egypt and China too weak to stand a chance.

Luckily for me Germany seemed to be going around burning the West coast Egyptian cities leaving me to move in a stream of settlers to fill the place. All I needed at this point was a great leader to build the forbidden palace and I'll have whole new mass of productive cities.

My results from huts til 1000 BC: 1 Settler!! :), 2 Warriors, $25, Warrior Code, Horseback Riding (techs I could just as easily have traded for, bleh).
So far I've pretty much left the AI tribes alone, hoping they'll research a few techs for me. In 1000 BC, we are in Anarchy, expecting to become a Republic in 925 BC - not too shabby!
I actually postponed the revolution in order to first complete the Pyramids. Linking up with a third luxury (trade with China) didn't shorten the anarchy period, it remained 4 turns.
Egypyt is really doing well in my game, they pretty much have the entire southern part of the continent for themselves and are rapidly claiming it.

Thanks to a goody hut I had my 2nd city build in 3700 BC already, that was a nice early boost. Thanks to trading I was able to take an early lead in the techrace and managed to keep it for the rest of the game.
I already finished (and won) the game, but won't go into detail to that for now. I attached my QSC timeline that goes up to 1000BC.

From 1000BC till 10AD not much happened.... besides building more cities. Germany and Egypt started a war which would eventually bring doom to the germans. The Chinese were quite annoying with their settlers.... building cities inside "my" territory... Later most of those cities culture flipped to me though and took the remaining Chinese cities by force when they were foolish enough to declare war on me!

Very nice write-up Aeson. I enjoyed the tales of the orangesodians. You also got a lot of early wars. I'm curious to see whether pre1000BC warmongering gives better results than my strategy.

I was expanding peacefully throughout the QSC but from 1000BC to 10BC China got reduced to 1 town in the tundra

A bad point for me, the Pyramids were built by the French, or Babs can't remember but they were on one other continent. It is important that building/conquering the Pyramids gives you a huge bonus for the QSC score.

Edit: Dimy don't tell me that you did not see the other iron that was much closer to your capitol than the southern one.

Edit: Dimy don't tell me that you did not see the other iron that was much closer to your capitol than the southern one.

Seriously, I hadn't seen that one! Well the southern one depleted in 110BC so it wasn't much use to me.... had to hook up the one at my capital after all ;-). It was still a good move to capture that source though, cuz it prevented the Chinese to build pikeman and swordmen later in the game :).

-Dimy

China claimed the southern one in my game.

My empire in 1000 BC:
- 12 towns, 28 citizens, 179 tiles, 4 contacts
- 1 Settler, 13 Workers, 1 Scout, 8 Warriors, 3 Spearmen
- The Pyramids, 1 Temple, 7 Libraries (1 Granary sold)
- all level 1/2 techs plus Philosophy, Code of Laws, Literature, Horseback Riding and The Republic
- 329 gold, 166 food reserve, 154 accumulated shields

:) :)
Nice city names.
;)

Have taken over all my continent and have footholds elsewhere.

In 1000BC I had 19 cities, I was researching Republic, but I already had Monotheism.

I gift lots of things to the AI, like Alphabet, Horseback Riding, Writing, contacts, Mathematics, Iron Working, Philosophy, Literature.... In 1000BC Egypt discover Construction and I gave 4 techs in exchange, entering in the Middle Ages. :)

It was a pity, I found another continent and contacts in 975BC. It could help a lot in the QSC if I had found it one turn before. :(

4000 BC: Great starting position!! A river, cattle, game, incense close by. Thank you very much GOTM crew. This is soo much better than last month :goodjob:

1750 BC: I've got 7 cities. Got contact with 4 other civs on this continent. Expect no more. Main goal now is to get to Literature first to build the Great Library.

I'm clearly in the lead:

Russia : 209 pts
Egypt: 142 pts
Germany: 137 pts
Zulu: 105 pts
China: 95 pts

My closest neighbour, China, is suprisingly weak for a builder! I beat him to the iron to the south and will try to build cities in the centre of the continent.

950BC: 12 cities. I managed to occupie the lush, shielded centre of the continent and blocked entries to it for the Chinese and Zulu. I've got all room to expand now. My science is at 10% and I'm building the GL. I'm the only one of the known world to be able to build it... The Germans beat me to the Oracle (big deal...).

It's getting better and better:

Russia : 334 pts
Egypt: 233 pts
Germany: 228 pts
Zulu: 167 pts
China: 155 pts

China's still very small and looks to be my first victim. I have to watch out for my neighbour Germany though.

10 AD: With 25 cities, I'm the giant on our continent. Two Chinese towns flipped to my side and more are to come: their culture is very weak. Managed to get the GL and money is flowing in with a lone scientist!! Also managed to get the Hanging Gardens.

Drawback: the Babylonians got the Pyramids first... You can't have them all...

It's time for some action in the comming turns:

- The Chinese are too weak. They must be destroyed. I built a giant army of swordmen and just have to wait 1 turn until the silk deal with the Chinese expires...
- My galley will try to cross the ocean to find new land. Our continent is gigantic, so I wonder how things are going elsewhere with the other 5 civs.
- I'm one step from the middle ages. In this period I will try to get to Milit. Trad. ASAP to get my Cossacks into play.

Being the richest, strongest, biggest and smartest on this continent, thing are looking very very good :D

Russia : 736 pts
Egypt: 475 pts
Germany: 412 pts
Zulu: 261 pts
China: 235 pts

The continent reminded me a little of the great lakes - it was nice being able to build ships inland and sail them through the connections to the ocean.

Tech results up to 1000 BC:

Goody huts:
Ceremonial Burial
Warrior Code
Mysticism
Horseback Riding

Researched:
Alphabet
Writing
Mathematics
Currency (in process)

Traded for:
Masonry
The Wheel
Iron Working
Polytheism
Map Making

The amount of tech from huts was nice, and most of the civs on the continent loved me for trading with them. I did manage to set up cities, if not yet connecting roads, grabbing me the southern iron source, as well as some spices. I managed to get some libraries shortly thereafter, as getting Literature early allowed me to start a cultural push. More details to come soon- once I turn my post-QSC notes into something coherent, I'll post here on my later turns.

This is what I have so far... not very impressive compared to what some of you have put together, but this start has been my most successful GOTM start so far. :)

- 4000 BC
What a start! :) I think the start will be a fine location, but to be safe I'll scout east to the hills and move my worker to the cattle to get things started right.
Heh, well I think I've found the site for city #2 or city #3. I would like my second city to be on the shore, which appears to be to the south, but that hill on the river to the east looks like a fine city location.
Moscow founded 4000 BC
I am going to leave the citizen working the original tile (game) because it provides a nice balance of food and production and also has an inital trade boost without a road. I set production in Moscow to a scout.
I set research to The Wheel with the thought that I'll need mobile offensive units on a large landmass and that horsemen will evenutally upgrade to Cossacks.

- 3900 BC
Our scout finds the sea! I know it's sea because the food is 1 instead of 2.

- 3850 BC

- 3550 BC
My scout pops the hut about 10 tiles SW of the starting position. The friendly Bulgars give us maps of their region.
We see a turquoise border to the SW of the Bulgar village. According to the Top 5 Citites this would be Beijing.

- 3500 BC
Moscow grows, borders expand. Citizen set to work the cattle tile.
I change production to scout to avoide wasting additional shields.
Worker begins mine NW of Moscow
My scout pops the hut about 6 tiles NW of the starting position. The Seljuks teach us Ceremonial Burial.
We make contact with the Chinese. Mao is Polite, has 1 silk connected, 10gp, Masonry and Warrior Code. He lacks Bronze Working and Ceremonial Burial.
Mao is willing to trade Masonry for both my techs and he's willing to trade Warrior Code for a tech and some gold. I have a feeling there are more civs around. I'll wait till the prices go down before I start to trade.

- 2900 BC
St. Petersburg founded on plains tile SE of starting position. Citizen set to work cattle and production starts on a scout.

- 2850 BC
Scout exploring area NE of start runs across a German archer (3/3). Bismark is annoyed, has 10gp and Warrior Code but lacks Pottery. He'll trade for tech straight up, so I go for that. He goes from annoyed to cautious.

- 2800 BC
I change production from settler to warrior in Moscow to avoid wasted shields. I waste 1 anyway.

- 2750 BC
Moscow produces warrior, begins settler.

- 2670 BC
St. Petersburg produces scout, begins worker.
My scout pops the hut about 11 tiles SE of the start position. The Celt tribe has taught us Mysticism.

- 2630 BC
We discover the Wheel and start researching the Alphabet.
We're going to have some horsies nearby, which is good too.

- 2550 BC

I trade Mysticism to Mao for Iron Working and 10 gp
I trade 50gp and Masonry to Bis for Horseback Riding
I trade Horseback Riding to Shaka for 25gp.
I trade Horseback Riding to Mao for 40gp.

I'll post my timeline (up through 1000BC, when I stopped taking detailed notes) when I've finished going through the existing posts. As a newcomer, however, I'm particularly interested in how people arrive at a final victory strategy. How could you possibly know by 2000BC that you are going for a space race victory?
