Why the prejudice against foreign workers

I was posting in Gothmog's thread "Do people still buy workers in PTW" and i noticed that a couple of people stated they dont want foreign workers because they "work slower"

I cant understand this position because foreign workers have no maintenance cost. Anything you get from these workers is totally free and should be considered a bonus. If you feel they are to slow team them with one of yours or with another captured worker.

I would much rather have 2 foreign workers than one regular worker. In fact, when it comes time to use a worker for a radar tower, outpost or colony I will always use my own because they can be easily replaced.

So to those who feel that foreign workers are useless, what is the basis for this belief?

ya, when combiined with other workers, your own or more slaves, they are ery good and dont cost nothing.

I don't like having to scroll-count my captured workers to figure out if I have enough. Easier to glance at the number in the Worker units screen...

As an industrious civ one captured worker and one homie will build a road in one turn. Same as two homies. I always try to stack my workers so one stack can finish a road in one turn (and later a rail). This is just one more form of micromanaging, no wasted worker effort (even a half turn).

I think the people who don't like slaves are mostly warmongers who play a level below their ability so they can crush all comers and avoid micromanaging. Thus they don't need to cut corners, or worry about slaves.

Foreign workers usually form the backbone of my work force. I just love taking over AI cities that have two or three settlers in them.

joycem, I agree with you and I think most posters here would too. I made a similar comment to yours on this thread in response to a post calling captured workers "quite useless" because of the slower work rate.

Mojotronica, I am intrigued by your comment. I don't think I've ever counted my workers - I can tell whether I have enough by observing whether all the areas I need improved are being worked upon. Knowing the absolute number wouldn't tell me anything - "I have thirty-two workers. Yippee!"

How do you use this number? And is scrolling through the captured workers list really inconvenient enough to offset the benefits of captured workers?

I love captured workers. At the end of my last game, I had 234 of them, and none of my own. They're the greatest.

yeah cromag. Ive sensed alot of dislike for slave worker as well, but based on your poll and the posting here I guess Im incorrect. maybe im just catching alot of newer players posting on threads.

As I said, I love having slave workers and am ecstatic when I can manage my empire totally with slaves.

I don't buy them in the early years, because, even with PTW prices, it still smells of "exploit" to me. But I am not averse to gaining them by, erm, "more forcible" means. :mischief:

Actually, the thing I don't like about them is the relative slowness. But once I have a sizeable group, that problem goes away. :D

I love the slave workers. They make nice trophies and relics from dead civilizations. :D

And also for the above mentioned points. I use them in defended stacks in dangerous territory to quickly build up destroyed improvements.

YOUR ALL SICK!
you all enjoy using as many slaves as you can, but these are human beings, some are germans, but most are human beings! my personal view is there great for connecting new cities or captured cities in a short space of time, so defenders can get there quicker.
i think that after U.N (if you dont win the election and have to carry on, or you turned it off) slaves should automatically join the captured city, or be able to do the same speed as normal workers.

That is not such a bad idea Flagulent Bob.

ive never seen or heard anything which indicates that slave workers effect either your reputation or your relations with any civs, including the ones they are taken from.
