Longevity too late?

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but it seems to me that the Longevity Great Wonder comes far too late in the game (Genetics).

It comes too late in the game for it to be any real boon to your population, and would seem to logically come more naturally at the discovery of Medicine and Sanitation, which might I add, has done more to prolong life than Genetic Engineering thus far in history.

Maybe battlefield medicine could be built with a later tech, or 5 hospitals and uni's (for health and education) could trigger Longevity as a Small wonder for each civ.

Any additions, or subtractions?

yes its' been covered, and yes you are right. You can mod it in the editor though to happen earlier, be carefull modding though because Firaxis spent alot of time trying to make this game "balance" so you dn't want to do anything that gives one civ or another an unfair advantage.

Here's an example, I wanted to bump up the hit points on all units (it makes it more realistic and less chance for a spearman to take a tank etc.) but then I felt artillery would be less effective, so I also bumped up their rate of fire by one.

sabo, i have played civ for months ow, and most f the time im in modern wwars, and i have never seen a spearman take a tank. even when a elite spearman is atacked bya regular tank. everyone acts asif it appens all the time, but it dont. for the 1 time in 1000 i think it is not worth complaining about.

I dont see the ancient age units as much anymore... since I patched ptw.

To answer your question about longevity. If your not playing the space race then the methods of winning are UN, domination, histogram, conquest. The UN might not ever cause you a win and that leaves you with slugging it out to the end. Once a civ gets sdi, they will start throwing nukes. With longevity + granary, your pop can come back 4 times faster after a nuke hit.

I agree that Longevity comes too late, but I also think it would be unbalancing if it came sooner. In my games, by the time longevity would be available to me, my cities are usually close to maxed out so the quicker growth is not a real benefit. But if it came sooner, at the same time hospitals become available, say, it would mean unbelievably fast economic expansion for the player who builds it.

I hadn't thought about the advantage it brings recovering from nuclear strikes; that makes it a bit more useful than I had thought. I've never had a nuclear war.

I've tried a few games with it coming with Sanitation and this is a great place for it. One player gets a moderate population boost at a time when it is real useful. Is it unbalancing? I don't think so; the teams that got it didn't always (or even usually) win. If you got it in conjunction with Pyramids, you (the human player) may have an unfair advantage, but the AI doesn't seem that much stronger for it.

Well bob it did happen to me once and a long time ago, the point I was trying to make was it DOES happen and since modding my hit points I have never seen it happen again, BUT just about a month ago I had a FULL hitpoint healthy army of FOUR infantry lose to one rifleman with ONE hit point left, so believe me, it DOES happen.

I think it comes too late. By the time you get Genetics and build Longevity, my cities have already reached the max that they are going to grow.

I see how longevity can be helpful if you are in Despostism or Communism, but it would be better, in most instances, if you were Republic or Democracy.

Please, can we try not to divert this thread on Longevity into yet another "spearman vs. tank" thread? Please? :(

Good point, Satchel. . . cough *thread-jackers* cough cough. . . Just kidding, guys. . . .you points are both true and frustrating.

Back to Topic: Longevity is go out of my way not to get. My cities fluctuate between pop points, and it's very annoying to have them go up two down two when I don't get around there and even them out. Could it do better earlier, quite probably.

Now that I'm paying more attention to my tiles, and trying to balance them so I don't have yo-yoing, I build Longevity just for the culture, no other reason.

It does come too late, but it's in the right place in history. Advances in science and the development of vaccines and antibiotics have greatly boosted the population of the world and allowed all of us to live longer lives.

But for gameplay purposes, it comes too late. I'll try a mod where it comes with sanitation. Historically it wouldn't be right, but it's a game. :)

Longevity? I'm a micromanagement freak when it comes to CivIII, and if I had Longevity, it would mess up my feel for the game. If Longevity were on, I'd have about a dozen carefully micromanaged cities fluctuating between getting a surplus and starving to death every few turns.

Just got the game, & built the Spaceship in time to launch but at the expense of military & culture so was looking at a bleak future if wanted to keep playing.

Then read about Longevity, built it, & started using up my bunny procreating citizens to rush construction & bring my cities up to speed, & went on to militarily conquer the world.

Plus knew since a Great Wonder, only one exists, Ive got it, they dont, careful management will eventually result in success.

Doubt if could of gotten the military win without Longevity.

By the way, is there a closing cinema like with the Spaceship for a military win? You dont get one if you keep playing after a win.

There's a movie that plays, is that what you mean?

Longevity is good for late wars, since your starving capuured cities down to One pop, it's good for a quick recovery & less likely to flip.

I don't think one post is considered "thread jacking" do you? I mean I was just trying to "enlighten" farting bob, I always thought thread jacking was when a post turns into a chat room.
One post does not constitute thread jacking as one or two newbie questions in GD by a newbie should not justify a flame to the newbie. I know your joking turner but isn't that what it is??

Anyway I came back here to make one more comment about Longevity, I have thought about it for a while and I've been playing civ day in and day out and I've NEVER gotten it

can anyone who has gotten it tell me if it does any good, I mean it grows your cities faster at a time when all your cities are probably at max population anyway, am I right?

...

Therefore, I feel completely justified in sayin, hey really cool guy, if you had really cool barbies, I would like to come over and play.

I like to play with barbies, & you're a really cool guy.

The above post is a good time to discuss psychological harrassment, & self defense.

Therefore, I feel completely justified in sayin, hey pussy, if you had the balls to stand before me, I would knock you on your ass.
STFU, & get off my posts.

the above poster was asking a simple question, but thanks for the flame and letting everyone know how "smart" you are

I wonder if the mods know there is a new owner at CFC?

and bring it on baby, where do you live?
