Wellllll... I haven't done a GOTM for quite a while and this isn't the best one to start back on methinks!

Going as hardcore as I can I haven't been able to get to Australia until1AD.

Quickest possible with science, govt, etc...

I dunno... Anyone done better? And how... I had big waits with the barbarians all being exposed as well.. was not fun!

Blah.. . Good luck to the rest of you!

Now 160Ad and have 4 cities... expanding nicely now... will start attacking say - hmmmm, 600AD...

Happy Civving....

I guess I am doing somewhat better. At 1 AD I have 17 cities sprawled around the globe.Cities in Australia,Far East,India,Panama,South America,North America and Africa.Basically most of the choke points are currently with a white city on it :).Sent at least 6 triremes with settlers to discover new worlds, settle, meet new people and kill them ;)

I have 19 techs and 2 wonders(Marco's and Gardens).

No war by me yet.Lots of barbs but none bothering me yet.2 landings at my capitol were easily repulsed with a vet phalanx.

DoM: Normally we do not allow maps to be posted in the spoiler thread, but since the map was revealed for this game, it is allowed, but not the norm.

I fear the AI's are dominating the world. Way behind (as usual)

1 ad 4 cities , population 390,000
wonders HG, Col, Pyr
13 tech adv

1000 ad 7 cities (5 in NZ, 1 in Aus, 1 in South America) population 1,040,000
wonders HG, Col, Pyr, GL, Cop
20 tech advances
had 2 sets of Barbarians land in South Island of NZ delaying Settlers plan to colonize, did capture their leaders but it slowed me down alot

1500 ad 8 cities (5 in NZ, 2 in Aus, 1 in South America) population 1,410,000
wonders HG, Col, Pyr, GL, Cop, Mag
29 tech adv
Had a city in Mexico (was a good location to block Carthage I thought) , which was bought by Carthage, we bought it back and they bought it right back.
Also lost another city in South America to a Knight

1750 ad 11 cities , pop 1,670,000
wonders HG, Col, Pyr, GL, Cop, Mag, MC, Leo
made some progress but still in last place vs civs (inadequate)

1850 ad 17 cities, pop 4,930,00
wonders HG, Col, Pyr, GL, Cop, Mag, Statue of Liberty, Darwin Voyage
42 tech adv
Built Sol, then switched to Democracy with 60% luxury for about 6 turns, got Population up to the point of having Moderate power, switched to Fundamentalism bought some cities in South America, and rebought Mexico for second time.

1900 ad 49 cities pop 13,430,000
wonders HG, Col, Pyr, GL, Cop, Mag, Statue of Liberty, Darwin Voyage, United Nation, Shak Theater (captured)
56 tech ad
Attacked in Asia, conquered Mongols mostly with spies, Power went to Supreme around 1875
Carthagians are mostly in Democracy and are rich when not, so hard to buy cities

Conquered Spain 1907
Vikings 1917
Carthage 19xx
technique was spies take out city walls in capital
take capital unil $ < 1000
buy rest of cities when no capital left
final population 43,570,000
56 techs, was just about to get Automobile, so no tanks for me
Stayed in Fundementalism from 1900 on, so score will not be great.
Carthage was last AI and really hadn't scratched them, so it felt like a game of Invasian America with me playing the bad guys. Also from my first set of 4 transports to North America 2 were sunk by the AI, ouch
I must say that by 1800, I thought victory was improbable and if it wasnt a GotM would probably have quit, but it goes to show the AI can be defeated from quite bad positions

The barbs seem especially nasty in this game. They are popping up all over the place, sometimes at the same time. Isn't there susposed to be a time interval between their appearances?

I had the same problem at my capital as Smash, but I took a different tack. I moved my garrison unit unto the grassland next to the capital (I built the capital on the forest) and the barbs never unloaded! They just sat in their trireme next to the capital for many turns. It happened a second time, the same way, several turns later. In fact, at 1AD, they are still sitting there!!

Good plan.I got the instant materialize and attack barbs unfortunately.Morphed in right beside the city square.I was holding my breath on the first attack.Phalanx survived and was promoted to veteran. After that I am safe until perhaps a barb crusader party appears. They are appearing but my capitol is safe.Colonies are fledgling though.Especially the city in North America.

As usual, impressive Smash.

Myself, I have 9 cities, Marco Polo's Embassy and Hanging gardens. Six cities are built on hills for the extra production and food. My NONE settler has been busy mining the hills before settling there.

I only have 15 discoveries, because I didn't want to trade for warrior code and such useless techs this time. I want to research faster this time. The mongols (purple civ) died early, so no help from them.

I have only two improvements; a marketplace in Moscow and my second city St. Petersburg. Moscow is soon building a library and Colussus. I am too lazy to sail around the world. A ride to another continent would take 30 turns or so, so I will develop peacefully in Australia. It is time to develop some land and build more cities.

I finished in 1940. The barbs were tough, particularly early on. I have a b2450 sav of an early situation. How do you insert part of a civ screen into a post?
I used my two settlers to start two cities right away. I expanded to the south island first, then to australia. by ad360 I had 9 cities, 14 techs, hanging gardens and lighthouse. In retrospect, perhaps lighthouse was not needed. By ad1020, I had 15 cities, 25 techs, and had added great wall and marco -polo. By 1834, I had 23 cities and 56 techs. I got michelangelo's, JS bach, magellan, leo, darwin's, and statue of liberty. I was able to bribe my way across asia, taking the spanish in africa, and finally the vikings in europe about 1913.
The carthaganeans in america had too much gold to bribe(20,000) for some cities, so I built up a howitzer blitz which I delivered from asia via hawaii. All in all, a good game, though it got a bit tedious at the end.

I didn't get started fast enough...

It's 1930 Ad...

and no where near finished...

Have 11 cities - lots of tech - not sure how many, got most from GL though... 4 cities in se asia 4 in aus, 2 in india...

severely opressed by the mongols, were quite friendly while I had more techs but as soon as they leeched these off me they attacked...

have a wall of fortified riflemen and cavalry blocking their spies from buying my asia cities (as you'd know every space has to be blocked to stop spies coming through...)

am now building a huge army of vet fanatics and some spies and have a fundy govt... my science is crappy even on democracy so concentratring on building money to buy out their central cities... all costing 10K - 18K.... lots of fun...

they have wasted about 50 - 100 destroyers and ironclads on my coastal cities in the past 10 turns or so... but have just gotten steel so can expect some battleships soon and don't know how I will hold up against them!!!

definately need more practise in starting from a crappy area...

:P

Fun map!
I built 2 cities on the northern island, 2 more on the southern island, then 5 cities in Australia and that was my civ during many centuries: peaceful growth under Republic most of the time, apart from an alliance with the Carthaginians (they asked for it), against the Vikings, but of course we avoided fighting the Vikings and used the alliance to get a secure shipchain to North America.

The tech race was hard early on (as usual  because of heavy swapping between the AI civs) but we are now on the edge of discovering Mobile Warfare, some 10 techs ahead of the best AI... The first and final fight should be mostly a question of logistics, with armours (and howies later on, I hope) against brave musketeers. Hope to finish before 1x00 :p .

Finished exactly 1x00 AD.
Apart from a transport with 8 strong units onboard sunk by a susprise Spanish ironclad, the conquest was easy, as expected (managed to build howies just in time to allow my vet spies to rest in peace instead of working hard destroying city walls  ).

I'm not sure whether it will be quicker to go waring straight away or sit back and then hit them hard ala lafayette.

I really didn't get started waring until after 1AD but I wasn't sitting back.Went on the offensive with crusaders.Soon I will be beyond 1500AD and still hitting with crusaders and dips

I sit back very seldom, but when I looked at where we were (somewhere between New Zealand and Australia) and where we ought to be (Northern Germany for a Viking city), I really started wishing to build Magellan and transports ... and railroads.
I agree that it will be fun looking at vet crusaders onboard mighty gallions and see whether they manage to finish the job sooner.
My bet is 'No' because there are too many walled cities... but if you take a number of unwalled cities with crusaders and a number of coastal cities with ironclads, then you probably can manage to finish quickly with a mix of cavalry and spies [dance]

wait and see

BTW here is an announcement for those willing to improve their gameplay:
solo, who is the champion of early landing, has just started a comparison game at Apolyton (without starting techs and without huts :D ).
I bet those who will have a try won't regret it.

The ais have built on rivers and put up walls.AND they all have pikes. This has made things rather expensive unit wise.I'm still in Monarchy as I shutdown science hoping I had enough, and its takes along time to raise gold for bribing.

hehehe, I'm still tranporting with triremes!..takes a bloody long time to assemble forces this way :o

...guts :goodjob:
This will make the comparison even more interesting!

It's not fair!!!

I've been having a bit of a battle with the Vikings. I bribed back one of my cities and got this message:

weird1.jpg

I got a negative amount of money, wiping out my original balance!! This is what I got when I tried to rush buy something:

weird2.jpg

The next turn it turned back to a positive amount and a cease fire had been signed with the Vikings. :) I decided to invest it in subverting (not inciting revolt) in another town of my the Vikings had captured.

Again, I got a negative value. 'Not to worry' I thought 'because it'll be positive again next turn'. But this time the Vikibgs sneak attacked (with a nuclear weapon no less!) and the Greeks captured my town. Because I had a negative value it took all the amount leaving me with 0 gold!

Whaou !!
I never saw this before !
Have you been forced to sell some installations ?

IIRC there is a cap at 30 000 gold.
Strange events can happen if you are richer than that.
But why would you like to be THAT rich ?
(I mean Bill Gates is NOT the author of this game ... and you certainly have better use for your gold elsewhere)

It's weird. I only had a few hundred left after bribing the town. When I pressed F3 after, the Viking had more than 60,000. I'm gradually making money back, but I had a few turns I couldn't buy anything, and I certainly can't afford to bribe towns and units anymore.

Ouch.

Here is a pic of my game at 1000ad.
el_kalkylus_1000ad_gotm25.jpg

At 1000 ad I have developed my empire like I normally have at 1 ad. I have 27 discoveries and the other civilizations refused to trade with me after 1 ad. They wanted war and my techs and money. I actually had to research horseback riding and masonry myself to be able to research sanitation, and that took a while.

Right now, Moscow will build a university next turn, and the turn after that Coopernicus observation. I must research Monotheism so that my cities can grow. I have only built three more cities after 1 ad.

My priorities were completely wrong I think.
