Creating new units problems

On Civ3 PTW im trying to create new units, but when I try and build em in my game a message pops up that says "ERROR reading File"

missing entry in "text\pediaicons.txt":ANIMNAME_ANIMNAME_PRTO

what exactly do i need to fill out on the area when im making new units?what exactly do i need to fill out on any given unit so that it wont confuse and mess up the game? I assume theres something i need to do with the civilopedia entry or something...... Please help me!

When adding a unit in PTW, there's an extra step you need to go through than with 'vanilla' civ. You need to open up your pediaicons.txt file (located in, oddly enough, the text folder) scroll to the bottom to where it says # Unit animations (2nd last section - between # Small Tech Icons and # Era-Specific Unit icons) and add these lines (change to suit specifics):


*more accurately, it should be #ANIMNAME_text you put in the Civilopedia Entry box in CivXEdit

I am Having a problem with missing entry in PRTO Animname for C3Conquests. I add 1 new unit and it is fine. I try to add another and I keep getting missing entry for ANIMNAME file for my other unit. I am New to this and the Newbie unit guide is great.I am just having problems when I add more than 1 unit. Can anyone HELP? Thanx. Civkenny

Sorry, I can't answer your question. I haven't added units to CivIII in years—save for one unit last summer. I'm no expert there. I would assume that someone here could help you or lead you to a tutorial, but they may ask for more specific information. I hope you can work out your problem.

Look at the DATE. 6 years is appropriate?

I would not be doing this if he had made is own thread instead of somehow digging up this one. And on his first post??

Could you specify which lines you add to the pediaicons.txt?

I'm no expert either, but might as well try and give you a few ideas. It would help to have more detail in your question, however.

For both of your units, have you added the PediaIcons section discussed above in this thread? Have you added the Civilopedia entry? If you followed the tutorial like you mentioned, I'm guessing you did both of these, but it doesn't hurt to ask...

More likely: what have you named them in the Editor, specifically where it says "Civilopedia Entry"? Did you include the 'PRTO_' before your unit name (aka PRTO_NewUnit)? You'll need to if that's how you have it referenced in your PediaIcons/Civilopedia .txts Did you include spaces in the name? If so, don't. Use underscores.

The biggest thing is that you make sure things match up EXACTLY. What you typed in the "Civilopedia Entry" box in the Editor must match what you type in the relevant .txt files. The new unit's animation folder must be named the same as the .INI inside of it, etc. The tutorial should cover that, but having something mistyped or not matching appropriately is the number 1 source of errors like this.

By posting here, everyone can get an idea for what information he's found and referenced as he tried to solve his own problem. So, yes, I think this is an appropriate location for his post—even though the thread hadn't been posted in for a number of years.

Plus, as has been repeatedly stated by the moderators, it is not against forum rules to post in old threads.

Hi Civkenny, did your problem get solved? If not let us know. I've added a few units to my game and know a bit on how to do it. I'm not as expert as some of the modders around like El Justo or Eric A but I may be able to help a little.
