I have no net connection at home for a few more months, and I want to play some hotseat with my wife. Whenever I click on multiplayer I get a black screen of death. Any idea what is wrong or how I can get a hotseat game going? Thanks.

This is probably related to my complaint. When I go to multiplayer it immediately and automatically starts to dial a connection which I have to stop before I get a cost. This has all the hallmarks of a feature rather than a bug, but is totally stupid. Does anyone know of a way round it that is not just as inconvenient (like taking out the tlephone plug) or should I start writing hate mail to Firaxis?

Same problem here. Choosing hotseat or any other mp option causes the game to crash. happened on ptw and on conquests also. So dont buy conquests thinking hotseat might work.

Okay, same problems. For few months PTW Multiplayer worked ok and then suddenly without for any reason it didn't work any more. I always got the error message about the exe-file. I haven't altered any files. Single player still works though.

Now I bought Conquests and I thought that the game will work. No, it did not. I manage to start the multiplayer but when program loads the second human player the whole program crashes. I'm getting really frustrated with this problem!

Uninstall won't do the trick so could there be some problems with the 3D-drivers?

Anyway, if someone knows the answer I would be very pleased to hear it.

I have WinXP, GF4 128mb with latest drivers.

O.K. I’m going to try and give you fellas a hand, there are a few of you, so lets just start with everyone doing the basics and we will work our way up.

First off, it looks like most of you are using C3C, there is a problem (unverified, but I believe by the number of complaints its real) with the installation of the 1.29f patch for vanilla Civ III with C3C. SO everyone give it a download at

ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/civ3/Civ3v129f.exe

and update the base stuff.

As far as the game accessing the internet through a Dial-Up in order to make MP games I am unaware of any toggle switch for this. If you are using firewall software you could set up Civ III to need to ask permission to use internet. Note that the windows firewall will not work for this. Should, for any reason, that option not be applicable you could try using the device manager to disable the modem when you don’t want to be able to connect, along that same line you could also create a hardware profile that does not have a modem for just playing Civ III. Of course, should the modem be external you could always just unplug it. I also remember that, back in the day, I would just pick up a phone to cancel a modem dial.

As far as a 3d driver is concerned, don’t worry yourself. Civ III does not use 3d and any applicable graphics driver would only be using a 2d driver, which should not have any problems.

Thanks for the info confirming my suspicion. I alredy use Zonealarm so it does not actually get to the internet. I just can't understand the design thinking that led the code to assume hotseat (use on one computer) should want internet access (use on more than one computer). It is a nuisance because I have to stop the dialling and tell Zonealarm "not this time please" before the game startup can proceed. I had rather hoped they would have sorted this for C3C especially since the list of options separates internet, LAN and Hotseat.

I am having the exact same problem. To the T.

Funny thing is that it worked just fine for a few weeks, then just stopped.

Okay, I know this is an old thread I'm digging up here, but I need help and I can't find anything more recent with a similar issue to mine.

I am trying to play Civ3: Conquests in hotseat.
Everything works fine except multiplayer.

I haven't tried playing on a network on the internet, so I don't know how it responds there.

I used to play hotseat with my neice, but then one day it started freezing when trying to assign colors.
This happened every single time. I was playing with only PtW at that time.

Since then, I have replaced the harddrive in my computer (so a fresh install of Windows XP) and purchased Conquests.
I still can't play hotseat.

I have tried everything I could think of or find hints to trying.
Obviously, the reinstalled didn't work.
Someone on this forum had a problem with civ3 that was fixed with DirectX 9c, but that hasn't had any effect on my issue.
I also have replaced my video card and recently got working drivers installed for it, and yet the issue still persists.

Anyone find a solution?
As I was typing this, I suddenly realized that something I did to fix a small problem I was having with Pirates! could also fix this issue... maybe.
I'll run off and check that, and if anyone has an idea of how I might fix this problem, let me know please.

Okay, that didn't pan out. I was thinking that an ini or something dealing with mulitplayer information had somehow ended up blank. Looks like the multiplayer information is intertwined with the single player information, so if that was the case then everything would be failing.

My preferences file for Pirates! had ended up blank, so I could set the resolution in game and my sails and flag and such and it wouldn't record it. I just went to the Pirates! cd and copied the preferences file from the cd over the one on my computer. All it contained was "[user preferences]", so I guess as long as the file contained something, then it would be able to do something with it... go figure.

Time goes by, and the problem is still awake.
I have this problem on both win 7 and win 8.1 on three different laptops.
If someone had found any solution, please post the link.
