Could somebody please modify the chinese ancient boat Junk so, that the civ colours would be visible. I cannot do that, so could somebody do something to it.

Suggestion: don't touch the sail - it looks great. Could the civ colour be in the hull of the ship?

Hmm. Where would you suggest the civ colors go?

Well, the hull of the boat is quite small. Propably it would be good idea to put the civ colors to the sails afterall... :)

But the sail just looked so good to me. :)

I know, that's the problem I saw. It looks so nice, I don't want to screw it up

I was thinking the best thing would be to have a little flag off the mast, but I *know* I'd screw that up, and it might spoil the feel of the unit (I doubt junks are supposed to have such things). So I decided to try a sail panel. What do you think of this? I could probably do it in a day or so if it doesn't look like it screws up the unit too badly :p

[Edit, I just went and looked up the original thread. TVA22, are you ok with this? Assuming you don't want to do it yourself, that is, since it was your unit? ;)]

Actually that doesn't look too bad.

About the civ specific colouring - What colour of the palette it should be?

And oh, I got the flicster working. Now I can alter it too ;)

The civ-specific colors are the first 70 on the palette. The unit has the "standard" blue colors there and I used 4 of them to replace 4 of the tan colors. The hard part is coming up with a coloration that doesn't completely screw up the look of the unit; after that it's just time-consuming and making sure you're consistent.

That is nice. I didn't want to mess with the sails *too* much when I first looked at this, but a full-sail conversion does essentially preserve the shading and is actually the easiest conversion to make.

could you just do one panel on one sail rather than on both?

I could. The reason I chose both sails was to ensure that colors could be seen on all directions. If you do just one sail, I think either North or South would be colorless depending on which sail you choose. But, if the consensus is the original 2-sail idea, by doing it in a fixed order and saving halfway through, I could do a 1-sail as a bonus.

pdescobar, if you do this, I'll happily bear your children. ;)
And, maybe it would look good to make the stern civ-coloured too.

Err, thanks... Excuse my nautical ignorance, but that's the back of the boat? I'm not sure exactly what you had in mind so I'll just pretend I didn't hear it ;) Anyhow, here is an expanded list of choices. Lemme know what you think works best by replying here; I'm too lazy to post a poll :p

Actually, could you do alternate panels - or at least change the shading so that the full sail isn't all one shade of the civ-colour?

It's possible, (darn near anything's possible ;)) but it's significantly easier to do the whole sail in uniform shading. I suppose I could go back and make alternate panels slightly different in shade; I'll have to see how it turns out and what most people think of it.

Here's a composite of the attack animation with uniform, civ-colored full sails in the first 8 civ colors:

(Edit: attachment removed; it's mirrored a couple posts down)

I think you should try and go for the different shading. In the above preview, the lighter colours look significantly poorer than the dark ones when it's all uniform.

Here's an update. Before I mess with it any further, I'd like some other input on whether making alternate panels darker will provide a substantial difference and any other suggestions for improvement. Below is the original animation, the first try at full-color sails (palette colors 6,9,10,11,12,13,36 added) and a slightly darker version to minimize the color range (palette color 8 instead of 6)

Further comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Grr , I just realized looking at these previews that Flc2Gif's conversion messes with the colors too much to properly show these subtle differences. If anyone wants to check it out in flicster, here are the 3 flcs: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/pdescobar_temp_JunkInProgress.zip I'm taking the rest of the night off to watch basketball :)

Well, first of all I would like to thank you pdescobar for making this effort. I tried to make changes to the files myself, but there were some problems, and I got tired...

The full sail looks pretty good. But am I too rude to say, that both of the new ones look a bit too dark (to me). Could it be made so, that the darker areas (shades) are quite dark, and the lighter areas are even more lighter - so the contrast of those colours would be greater?

Anyway, this is looking pretty good. Thanks in advance ;)
