Is this some incredible mod, or a fake ? ^^

Akka, the 'after' shot is the game that started it all, the original Civilization
Not really, there was no cultural borders in Civ1 :p

And the maps looks like the same on the minimap.

It's either an incredible mod, or an incredible fake ^^

Darn, after seeing the after picture, I was hoping that as I scrolled down there would be a link to a mod-download. ;)

It would be pretty cool if there were a mod that made Civ3 look like Civ, but I don't think I would like it after ten seconds. Too ugly and blocky. How were people able to stand that? :cringe: Also, I thought that the original Civilization looked quite a bit different than that (different colors).... Although I never owned the original, so I have no idea.

Matrix is this the civ1 mod you have been talking about making?

btw the rivers are placed in civ3 style to.

It was EXACTLY like that, except for the cultural borders, the fact that the ground under your rule was not showing on the minimap, and that the rivers were a type of terrain on their own.

And it's not ugly at all ! It's a nice graphical style right from our fond memories

Actually at the time, Civ 1 didnt have that bad graphics. Sure, now its really really old. I mean think about it, I was playin it on a '286.

Civ, We have come a long way baby!

Another difference I just noticed : there is "fog of war", which did not existed in Civ1 ^^

Hmm... and Matrix has yet to tell us wether this is a fake... or if there is a mod you can download to make the game this way.

Yeah, pretty cool ! :goodjob: Even if this is NOT Civ1...
This reminds me of my Civ debut on my old Atari ST nine years ago ! What an amount of time !!!
Btw, another thing I've noticed : grasslands and plains could not be mined IIRC. At least in Civ2, but I'm pretty sure in Civ1 too...

You are right, mining plains/grassland didn't work in civ1. You could press 'm', but turned it to forest then.
Also, IIRC, there was no jungle, just swamp.

Haha! It's fun to see you all guessing about this picture. :D It tempts me not to tell you how I did it...

But ok. I just did a very lot of editing. It took me quite a long time making the Civ1 screen; the Civ3 screen is just a game I'm playing on the moment.

I honestly love the Civ1 lay-out. WillJ's remark about not understanding "how people could stand that" astonishes me. And I have wondered and dreamt about what Civ3 would look like in Civ1 style. :) So I just did so myself.

Another reason is my girlfriend's computer is not good enough for Civ3 and I prefer Civ1 over Civ2, so I often play Civ1 there. And then it susprises me how much fun that game still is! It's different than Civ3 and much more simple, but still so much fun! And I believe one of the most important aspects of the attraction of Civ1 is it's lay-out.

By the way, I don't think I'll finish the Civ1 mod. The fact that all the squares of Civ3 are diagonal makes it actually impossible to do it right. :undecide:

I don't think you'd want it to look exactly like Civilization I - you'd want it to look like Civilization I but with better graphics due to increased resolution and colours.

But, having it from a straight-down view really is much better than this isometric nonsense. It's much easier to plan your moves.

Of course, better again would be to have hexagons! Then the city radius wouldn't have to look like a heavily bolded X, and would instead be a proper radius.
