A new unit to fill the gap between Offensive HTH foot unit and Guerilla:
Grenadier:
Stats: A5.D3.M1/Cost 50s + Saltpeter (available w/ Metallurgy)
Medieval Infantry and Longbowmen upgrade to it, then it upgrades to Guerilla.

It represents the adoption of gunpowder as the primary offensive weapon by European armies -- it's cheap and powerful enough to encourage players to upgrade or replace all those old obsolete units with it if they have Saltpeter.

Guerilla are made slightly better to make the upgrade to them f/ Grenadier more attractive: A8.

Musketmen are made much cheaper (because they are very OVER priced in the game) Cost 40s + Saltpeter.

Cavalry are made a little more expensive because they are astonishingly UNDER priced in the game. Cost 80s + Saltpeter & Horse.

By modifying these units in minor, balanced ways the age of gunpowder becomes much more dynamic, and players won't have all those ancient units running around well into the Industrial age...

Finally eliminate the Age of Sail-spoiling Ironclad.

Comments, anyone?

Actually, a project already underway could supply you with the requested Grenadier. I will direct you to the Cossacks Conversion Collection in the Completed Units forum. Several examples of European Grenadiers are being converted and rigged up as we speak. They are looking promising.

Kryten has just completed a Minuteman unit, that could possibly fill in your request for a cheaper Musket unit. Available at the Unit Library

And lastly, in the Units Library once again, there is an Iron Frigate unit, that brilliantly replaces the American-centered ironclad.

Just some ideas for ya.

Cheers mate!

Hello Mojotronica :)

I very much agree with you about the costs of Musketmen & Cavalry in Civ3.

I don't know if it is of any use to you, but have a quick read of the third post in this very, very old thread.....

....it might give you some ideas.

(Sorry for not posting more at this time, but it is getting very late over here....and even Kryten needs his downtime!)

:D

Nearly exactly what I did. My grenadier is (6/4/1). I use the Napoleonic Infantry-Graphics for it, but will probably change this to the Cossack-Grenadiers.
It works really good. AI uses them very effective.

I made the Guerilla (6/6/2) + Ignore movement cost for forest and jungle.
Makes up a good cavalry-replacement while waiting for tanks.

Finally eliminate the Age of Sail-spoiling Ironclad.

I replaced the ironclad with the iron frigate and reworked the middle ages-tech tree so that there are several techs between magnetism and the industrial age. (Physics, Chemistry, Theory of Gravity not optional). Ironclad comes with industrialisation.
Works good!
