I am very interested to hear how everyone's game is going. I am, however, a bit wary about giving out too much information as it may be spoilish to someone who has just begun. So... If you haven't explored the entire world yet, haven't made contact with everyone yet, or if you just would like to avoid anything that you may feel would take away from your own game, then please do not read on.

So far, I am about in year 1550. My still-expanding Mongol Empire had made short work of the upstart Engilsh Cililization almost 3000 years ago and finally finished off the last Russian city (when I finally found the darn thing) about 800 years ago. A more enlightened Empire has risen from this violent past and a Democracy rife with science and trade has emerged. A beacon of light in the world symbolized by it's Statue of Liberty and famous Observatory and University, the Mongols have granted Women's Suffrage, have built the United Nations, discovered a Cure for Cancer, built a mighty Hoover Dam and are currently in talks to finish developing a SETI program in the very near future. Future plans also include a space program but - with peaceful intentions - have decided not to pursue the development of a weapon of mass destruction. Yet.

Relations have been good with the Chinese and the Japanese. The Chinese have been rather isolationist but their cities are quite majestic and trade has been lucrative with them. The Japanese have been slowed by an apparent haphazard and poorly planned method of expansion that seems to include random city sites with little to no improvements within - rendering them relatively harmless.

Relations with the Vikings and the Egyptians, however, have had some strains. This is likely due from proximity as we all are sharing a very large continent.

The Egyptians have grown in similar fashion to the Chinese in that their cities are large with well-developed infrastructures, but of late they had been doing some major sabre-rattling. They had placed a great number of military units on the outskirts of a Mongol village about 50 years ago and when one of their diplomats was discovered stealing technology a minor war ensued. The superior Mongol units of calvary and destroyers cleared the threatening Egyptian units and, in a show of counterespionage, two Mongolian spies were able to bribe a large bordering Egyptian city. While still tense, relations with the Egyptians have improved slightly.

The Vikings still present the greatest obstacle to peaceful relations. Sneak attacks are happening with greater frequency and with more advanced military units. My own counterintelligence has spoiled every attempt to garner technology by nefarious means, but very little progress has been made to make the Vikings pay for their indiscresions. For some reason, an inept foreign advisor refuses every time to insist that Viking military remove themselves from various city limits. I am only given the choice to share maps or suggest an alliance. Mental note: fire that dopey foreign advisor. Why does she think it's always such a good idea to trade technologies anyway? Anyway... They (the Vikings) are constantly changing governments from Democracy to Monarchy and back again which may point to some inner turmiol that I can later exploit. Whatever the case, I am keeping a close eye on them and have made sure that they have no more room to expand.

What the future holds - I can see that my closest tech rival and military upstart - the Vikings - will likely have to be removed as a whole. With excellent trade and a technology that boasts the availability of battleships, cruise missles and armor, my military advantage is all bu assured (especially as I watch Viking caravels and frigates roam the waters). My discovery of sanitation can ensure that my cities can continue to grow and with freight my trade dollars are immeasurable. I can see, however, that a pact between the aforementioned Vikings and Egyptians will possibly necessitate a Mongolian government shift as the people demand war to avenge rival actions. When that happens, rest assured that the Vikings will go down harder than they do in the football playoffs and the Egyptains will soon follow.

If the Japanese don't do themselves in, I would think that they would soon follow and the Chinese will have to be curtailed to prevent future uprisings.

I'm feeling confident that the world will soon be mine.

I would love to hear how everyone else is faring as well!!!

How many people have finished the game already? I am curious...

I haven't been able to play the game as much as I'd like to so I'm a little behind. But here's how its going:

I made an early humiliation of the English, but lost the Hanging gardens taking London. Oh well, it's only twenty points. I switched quickly to democracy and my empire became the richest and smartest in the world. I tried trading peacefully but the Russians decided to fight me. And do you know what I did? I kicked their a**! I switched to communism, built a big army, and squashed their empire in a quick pincers movement.

However, some of their cities lied in Egyptian territory so I sought an alliance so that I wouldn't have to worry about Egyptian attacks. Unfortunelatly, I was destroying the wrong civ. While I was crushing the Russians, the Vikings and Japs formed an alliance and built a mighty empire between the two of them. They don't like me and they sunk some of my cruisers, so now I'm trying to take down the Vikings.

But now the Chinese have joined with the Vikings and their forces are quite formidable. I'm slowly winning but my late attack is motivating them towards nuclear development. It's now 1850 and I'm trying to squash the Vikings befor they develop the Laser and start building the Manhattan project. I could probably win by spaceship, but I want to go for the high score, so I'm going to take over the whole world except for one city. I'll build a spaceship and launch it so that it arrives at Alpha Centauri in 2019 with 40,000 colonists.

The war rages on...

Not this guy. I chose to be peaceful and concentrated on science. That strategy worked fine until 1840 when the Russians found me too easy a target. Within one turn I was at war with almost everybody. So I got diplomatic ("Good doggy," etc.) while I stocked up on Howitzers. The Chinese had been stealing my technology, so I dispatched them - gaining a good supply base for my later battles. Even though I still was dealing with my Democratic government, the battle only lasted a half dozen turns. New technique for me: rather than killing off the Chinese partisans, I bribed a bunch of them (209 each) to use as occupying troops in later captured cities.

The Vikings were looking too strong, and they had left a "back door" open so I switched to Fundamentalism and started on them next. That's when the Russians decided to investigate the Manhattan Project. I started to shift towards targeted strikes to stop that idea, but I was too late. Within about three turns, the Russians, Spanish, Vikings and Japanese all had multiple cities seeking the bomb.

Well, if you can't join 'em, beat 'em. I went back to work on the Vikings. I'm up to 1881 now. No one has been willing to be the first nuker, yet, so I'm about to clean up the remains of the Vikings and Japanese and have started in on the Spanish. My allies, the Russians will be next, then I'll pick out one of the English cities - yes, they are still alive! - to keep me company.

Translation: a long slow game, but I should make it by Mar 31st.

Here an update since my last post:

...the war just never stops!

(1900 AD) I was entangled in a massive duke it out affair with the Vikings in the mountainous area located about 20 squares south and 20 squares east of Karakorum. The Vikings had deployed almost their entire army to extract me from the riverbed. Unfortuneatly, the Japs launched a surprise offensive on the spot that is occupied Russia. I forced them back into the ocean and used my UN to force a peace.

Luckily, this was just about the time that my Eastern russian cities began to get up to full production. So I cranked out a three transports loaded down with armor, howitzers, and Mech Inf, and launched an attack on the Viking's exposed flank -their capitol island. I took it out in grand fashion along with all their wonders. With their industrial base in my hands, they are now almost nuetralized. They only have about ten/twelve cities (only three are above size twelve) located to the East of the Mountains that I mentioned before.

But! Just as I was finishing off the Viking capitol, the Egyptians called on me as an ally. They asked me to give them stealth. I said, "kiss my a**!" and they broke the alliance. One turn later they simultaneosly signed an alliance with the Vikings and stole techs from the colonies I had taken from the Russians (located just within a few squares of thier central population centers). I declared war (now I was at war with everyone). I should have just turned the other cheek, because I underestimated their military might and they quickly overan the four remote occupied Russian colonies. DAMN!

So right now I'm trying to finish off the Vikings before I do an about face and fight my former ally. Meanwhile the Chinese are building Apollo Program. I'm not worried since they have only a few industrial cities that can competantly manufacture spaceship modules and I'll be able to easily take them over if their spaceship gets too big. The Japs aren't really a threat either, they can't research anything, so I'll let them be my pets while I rack up massive scoring.

Well it would appear that as my first post I should tell of my results.

1905 Mongols land on Alpha Centari!!!

It was the first game I really finished and was successful. The AI went nuclear and quickly desimating about 7 cities and nearly lowering my citizen count greatly but some how I managed to hang on.

I used a relatively balanced approach. Heavy on Science and when necessary heavy on cash to "purchase"
smile.gif
a few russian cities along the way. After removing the Russian from the game I went after the Japanees army - mistake I was not strong enough and the vikings managed to split my forces North and South and in the mid 1800's I lost nearly all my southern (previously Japanees cities and a lot of tech) to the Vikings.

Once Nukes were involved the Egyptians went on the aggressive. I spent most of my energy just cleaning up pollution and trying to protect the best I could any city that didn't get attacked by the Egyptians nukes. Global warming and famine were real issues by the late 1800's. The race to space was on and I lauched first. After the lauch retreat and defend and hope my population wouldn't be desimated by more nukes and famine. I was at war with Egypt, Japan and the Vikes. With war on 3 fronts and no reserves we made it. Not pretty but we made it

Hi everyone

Game no finished yet, but should be OK.
I started late (around the 10th) because I change my PC and had to reinstall.
I always (for the last 2 years) played in deity, and more than often 7 civ, huge map, raging hords and played as a 'Isolationist & Perfectionist' i.e. never crushed another civ if a can avoid a war, send my caravan to my own cities, switch to republic then democraty as soon as possible and focused on production and science superiority.
So I tried to play my own style again and I found it strange to go back to king, I was building temples in my cities far too early (used to have the second citizen not pleased at all) but the good part of it is than I manage to have almost all the wonders
cool.gif
.
I am around 1200 AD, democratic industrial civ, building the Hoover project before I polluted averywhere, expending on all the islands around.
On the diplomatic area, the english are still ALIVE, I let them survive at the beginnig because I didn't want to waste my time start ing a war without huge technological advantage. Now they still are at Iron working age (with one of my bribed musketeer) against Riflemen and the next provocation might be the last
soldier.gif
.
I saw just ONE other city, an egyptian one and a few other units including a viking crusader than was lucky enough to destroy a just build city by killing the guarding riflemen
angry.gif

I guess than no other civ have gunpower yet and I thing I will have a easy launch to alpha c. without having to divert lots of ressources to hold the other civs back
smokin.gif
(I find it to long and boring to go for a global killing

I hope than was not too long

Here's my latest:

Around 1700, with all techs discovered by the Mongols, things were getting very tense all over the world. The Russians were nothing but ruins and a memory and the English were nothing but fossils. However, the Vikings, the Chinese and the Egyptians were getting a bit hot under their collective collars. The Japanese still could not get out of their own way for some reason.

The Vikings: I Made the switch to FUNDamentalism and decided it was time to take everyone out. Their dips got a few advances with dips (flight, adv. flight - funny they were able to get them and they didn't have things like electricity), and I knew I had to go for the Vikes first. It was relatively anticlimatic as raging hordes of stealth fighters rained down on their SAMless cities. A few outdated fighters tried to help out, but they crashed and burned. Trondheim fell and the democracy they had collapsed. The rest fell to just convincing the rest of the citizens that it was in their best interest to become Mongolian.

The Egyptians: I took 500 gold from the Egyptians a while back to fight the Vikings. Money I needed at the time and put me in an alliance with them and kept them off my back for a while. However, they had no less than 15 units and about 10 diplomats all within sight of a nearby city (no exaggeration). I had to put units outside my city and expel the diplomats when I could. As the Egyptians Stacked them with military units, it meant that I could not get rid of some. I finally had to cancel the alliance, and in about a nanosecond they declared war on me. I was prepared for this one. They were in a republic and they did not have too many cities. They were gone in a blur.

The Chinese: Again, they were in a democracy like the Vikings were. I was willing to offer them the honor of being my pet civ, but they went and stole Nuclear Fission (again - without having any of the prerequisites) so they had to go. They were kind enough to connect their cities with rails and my forces (when they finally got there) made short work of them. Gone.

The Japanese: Poor guys still could not get out their own way. They were trying to be militaristic, and in other games I've had trouble with them at times. In this game, however, I think they had a tough starting place and just could not get on track. They were sending elephants up against my mech infantry - I actually think I heard laughter coming from some of the cities. I took their capital with one howitzer and one calvary, bought all but one, and made peace. I gave them navigation and they became worshipful. It really IS just like having a pet.

Well, the game is in the late 1700's and now I'm fixing up the infrastructure and putting up a new city or two. Boredom has set in and I'll have to decide if I really want to spend over 200 turns padding a score.

The other games here - especially Blue Monday's and Hotrod's - sound like so much more fun to play. Not to say mine wasn't fun while in war time - and it was somewhat entertaining to see enemy triremes try to run from a battleship. RUN AWAY!!!!!!!

MIght as well add my update:

1200AD, English perished very early. Starting continent nearly covered in Mongol cities. Vikings have just one city left on the main continent, and that should soon be mine. Chinese have also declared war, but are too far away to be a factor. Just discovered the Russians, but have not established an embassy yet (dips are tied up fighting the Vikings). The Vikings and Egyptians left lots of land between them, so I have lots of room to expand, which is what I intend to do after taking The Udal. I have Hanging Gardens, Mike's Chapel, Colossus, Copernicus, Isaac Newtons, Leo's, the Statue, (maybe more, can't remember for sure). Just hope I can finish in time.

Quick update:
350 BCE English obliterated. 9 cities and 2 wonders.

Built Statue of Liberty and changed to Communism.

970 CE 44 cities and new techs every 3 turns.

1360 CE 66 cities and news techs every 2 turns.
At war with everybody.
Russians obliterated except 1 city. They are pet civ as they're furthest behind in science.

1515 CE Half the Egyptian cities captured and several from all the rest.
SUDDEN CHANGE OF STRATEGY... I'm so far ahead in wonders, science and city base, that I've suddenly made peace with everyone, and about to change from Communism to Democracy and go for final growth and quick launch.

Well I just couldn't wait anymore so I have finally downloaded it on a friends computer (the one that I am using to post this) and played some turns before saving the game to a disk!!!

The year is 500 BC and the English are no more!! The world has yet to see any wonders but several of my cities are working hard to change this. I have expanded to the nearby islands but have yet to make contact with any new Civs!!!

In 1883, I sent a spy into Egyptian territory, checking for nuclear weapons. Sure enough, two of their cities had nukes so I had no choice but to declare war. Both cities were well defended but my Howitzers made short work of them. I then accepted their surrender.

Unfortunately, the Egyptians were allied with the Japanese. Since I had driven them back to their homeland - and I wasn't ready for a naval assault - I had no way to force a Japanese surrender. So I was a little surprised when a lonely Japanese outpost found a spare nuke to drop on one of my newly acquired cities. I'll deal with them soon.

In 1884, I'm picking off more Egyptian cities (and 28 Howitzers will get quite a few cities), plus that Japanese outpost. Soon the big continent will be just me and the Russians.

The English are still at war with me. They're funny. I think they got their tactics from Monty Python.

Fundamentalism is new to me. Prior to GOTM, I was strictly a Monarchy/Democracy guy. But I'm enjoying Fundamentalism - what a great stress reliever!

Late night update: It turns out those Howitzers can take out 13 cities. The last Egyptian city was spared until 1887 when some renegade Egyptian partisan sniped one of my engineers. Say good-bye to the Egyptians.

[This message has been edited by BigWheel (edited March 16, 2001).]

Further update to three posts ago...

A short postponement to the change of strategy, and a temporary flirtation with Fundamentalism, wiping out the Egyptians to get Mike's Chapel and taking the Russians too.

It's now mid 1600s, and there are three civs left.
We're at peace but they all hate me!
I have 112 cities and my throne room is complete.

Now where was I? Oh yes, my Fundamentalist government still has the support of the people, probably because of recent victorious campaigns. After eliminating the Egyptians, I started building many transports to invade the homelands of the Vikings and the Japanese. As my ground forces were amassing, I sent in a few Stealth fighters and paratroopers to establish a base city. That was easy enough, and when I transported a couple of dozen Howitwers, it was all over.

There was one Japanese outpost that looked like a good pet city, but they wouldn't shut up. And there was still several Japanese units that kept popping up and declaring war, so I lost my patience. That left the English and the Russians (still my allies).

I was going to keep one English city but I got carried away with the Stealth fighters. Whoops! Now it's just the Russians and me.

I started checking out the Russians but found that they had a terribly scattered civilization. Only a few cities were connected by railroads and some didn't even have roads. Being the nice guy I am, I sent in most of my engineers to build connecting railroads for ALL of their cities! Never since the days of the Trojans has someone been so nice to a potential enemy.

Once that was done, I dissolved the alliance and attacked. I'll finish tonight. Thanks to 44 Howitzers and some decent air support, those 31 Russians cities will become one in a single turn.

Managed to get in an hour last night (first time in over a week-felt good). Purchased The Udal from the Vikings, switched to Republic (too many units in the field to go Demo just yet). Am researching Industrialization; techs every three turns. Noticed lots of Viking units still hanging around near The Udal, so loaded a Dragoon and the only available diplomat on a Galleon and started cruising the Southern coast. Yep, there it is, Ravning Enge. Had to quit at that point (1260AD), but my diplo should take care of Ravning Enge soon. Depending on cost to incite from the ship, I may land and try to work around to the North to be farther from the capital.
