Don't know if I'm the first to come up with this idea, but if not: So what?

AFAIK it is possible to make not only strategic resources a requirement for building certain units, but also luxury resources.
Since the luxury resources are not (more or less) evenly distributed over the map, but clustered in certain regions, they mostly are only available to one or a few civs (before the establishment of trade routes, of course).
This way it could be possible to insert units that are only available for one or a few civs, randomly appointed by the distribution of luxury resources. Could make the game a little bit more interesting.

Of course this works only in the ancient and early medieval era, before everyone has trade routes with everyone else, but that's no problem, if the relevant units are from these periods.

First ideas what units this could be:

Ivory: Early elephant rider (obviously), available with horseback riding, 3/2/2, +1 HP, very expensive! (I already tested this as a carthagian UU, strong, but not invincible)

Incense: A religious motivated unit, available with theology, maybe the crusader (5/2/2) or the fanatic (?/?/?)

Furs: Hunter (Scout with 1 attack and defense?)

Dyes: Mercenary hoplite (from Kryten's hoplite collection), (1/3/1) -1 HP. Why dyes? AFAIK dyes (purple) in the ancient world were mainly produced by the phoenicians, who hired lots of greek mercenaries. Not a stringent connection, but better than nothing!

Gems: Swiss guard ( 3/3/1, pikeman replacement)

Silks, Wines, Spices: Ideas wanted!

Comments, ideas, rants?

It seems to be a good idea PH !

For Fantastic mods : Giant spiders with silks. I've included Pearls in Strategic resources in my mod, so maybe Giant Crabs... The same with Game : Warhammer's Gobs Mounted Wild boars etc
Iron, Stone/Marble, Silver Golems...

For SF : Frank Herbert's Dune units : OK ! I know : Easy...

Nice ideas, some of them are old(ex eleohant), but i like the Hunter idea. Why should gems make swiss pikemen?

Quite simple:

1st) I'd like to introduce swiss pikemen since they were famous in medieval european warfare. Since they were mercenaries they need something to get paid (apart from the 1 gold maintenance cost)

2nd) I need a unit that's only available, if the civ has gems

Put them both together and voila: Swiss pikemen need gems! :p

well kinda cool, but eventually those resources get traded around, and then they really wouldn't be UU's....

Great idea! :goodjob:

SILK: A Ninja - a swordsman with hide nationality ability (3/2/1). I don't know why. :) Perhaps fine silk can be used as a camouflage... :p

WINE: Wine Galley - can transport 3 units instead of 2.

SPICE: ???

I think this is a really good idea

For silks you could use some kind of asian unit since that's where silks were first discovered
Wines could also be something religious since both the Christian and Jewish faith use them alot in worship. Failing that it could also be some sort of medieval European unit, I don't know what though.
Spices could be used for a type of witch doctor unit.

Only a few suggestions not very developed but hey i'm only trying to help. :)

Maybe the assassin I'm currently using for oriental civs (3/1/1, invisible).

I won't include hidden nationality-land units! I tried it once with the spy and it was terrible! The AI used them in masses and finally I had to guard all my borders with units to keep them out.
Now I make them only invisible. Still a nuisance, but restricted to wartimes!

Maybe an advanced transport ship would be better for spices, since spices were a very important trading good throughout the ages.

Regarding wine I'm thinking of another kind of mercenary unit, but don't yet know what.
