Well, it turns out the "surprise" is the Celts... What I did was just work towards monarchy, map making, and mathematics. When I got map making I sent a couple of settlers over to Europe, and when I got mathematics I sent one phalanx and one catapult to the hills next to Cardiff.. took it a couple of turns later. The Vikings fell in a similar manner, starting with Trondheim. By the time I concquered the Vikings, I had colonized all of Europe except for the South, which was in control of the Spanish. The Babylonians died early and restarted as the Zulus. I was able to build almost every wonder of the world.

When I got Marco Polo's, I talked to the Zulus and found out that they were in the Americas. Well, the Mongols are in control of Asia and are flooding into Africa, but they're behind in tech just like the rest of the world.

King level is a fun refreshment.

One thing is missing, though.. I forgot to save at 1 A.D., so my hopes are bashed. Oh well, I do it for fun anyway.

I took a little different path on my way. I used the celts for a few thousand years to trade off some techs with them. Meanwhile I looked at the other tribes (top 5 list)in the game and found the Americans and Aztecs weren't among them, Chinese and Spanish were. I figured I would wander over to America and was delighted to find nothing. I switched to Republic early to get ahead in science and have done that, and I am so far keeping the colonies appeased

.

There is just something rewarding about watch your riflemen stand up to a horsemen onslaught hehe. I just hope I can keep my expansion going.

I took a different route than both of you. I killed the Celts in the first 15 or 20 turns. I built a road to Cardiff and then rush built an archer and took it out. Then I rushed to Map Making and have 2 cities in Europe and contact with the Vikings and the Spanish. I have 3 cities in the motherland and 2 colonies in Europe.

I think it's only 1500BC so I'm off to a pretty good start. (For me anyway)

Having played this map many times my first objective is the only hut in the isles' before I build...so 3950bc and I knew.1st tech is WC.2 cities built.1 phalanx ASAP.Put him on the hill.Goaded them into war and just survived the chariot..but now he was a vet.3 archers later and it was over.
My game "started" in 2950bc.
Tough start.

Well, it turns out the "surprise" is the Celts...
Dead and buried.

Just for good measure, I had my soldiers shag all their hippos before shooting them and painting them orange.

Well......I'm doing like awesome!!

Just wanted to share the powergraph.

1120AD
Celts and Chinese have been destroyed. I've almost finished off the vikings, spanish and Russians will be soon. MUHAHAHAHAHA!!

Let me see, 3 cities and in the 3000 B.C.'s. Still a lot to go....

This is going so extremely terrible!!

I'm in 1780 AD and I've got 11 cities of which I've built 8 myself. Those are: London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Hamburg, Reykjavík, St. John's (Newfoundland), Québec and Havana. Mainly because the Russians started on two different spots(!), namely North America and Africa, there wasn't any place for my to grow. So I let my cities grow themselves. Now I'm a fundamentalist and start conquering, but probably too late...

But this is what just happened: I attacked Moskow (on the spot of Washington) with a frigate and that cities appeared to have only one defence unit (legion). And I just happened to have a galleon in Havana, so I boarded Havana's only defence unit (riflemen) and took Moskow, very surprisingly.

One thing is for sure: if Tony Blair would've been leader in the past, England would've never expanded as much as they did in the real world.

At the end of my first GOTM, the magnificent ESS Tony Blair overtook RSS Josef Stalin and made its way into History! (:
Good old Joe Stalin, being a bad sport started a nasty little sneak attack with his nukes! (That hurt my score badly.)
I don't favor using nukes my self, as they are rather messy and that hurts in the score.
I hate when all the other civ's team up against me and steal my tech. (My spy network must have been compromised!) ):
It was a good game, but I'm not pleased with my self as the nukes took me by surprise.
I did find a cheap way of getting units! Have the "natives" take one of your cities (a small one and after you have guerilla warfare) then take it back! That gave me 5-10 partisans for the price of some 50£ (being British it must be £) They were useful for the defense of some none frontline cities. Freeing units for the war-effort.

The average airline pilot having some 5000 hour's in an airplane - Most of us properly have more hour's plaing civII?

Too cramped for my liking. I took out the celts fairly soon, and colonized Denmark, but the Spanish are all over Europe and have wiped out the vikings. I planned an historical English global colonization but it isn't going to work. The french are in North America where I now have 6 cities, and they are top of my list for annilation. There seem to be swarms of Russians coming up from South America so I reckon they're unchallenged there. I've got 2 cities in Africa and met the Mongols, who are expanding fast and must dominate Asia, with the Chinese. Australia ? a restart maybe.

Anyway it isn't going to plan, tech's too slow and Wonders are evenly shared between major civs. World domination an impossibility, first spaceship, slim chance. I'm really not sure where to go next, but i am planning to take the Falklands Islands just for fun.

Well, after some time spent last weekend I got her done!!! I think i had a pretty successful time of it too. I reached AC but could have won by conquest as well. It was kind of fun messing with the celts and discarding them when I felt like doing so. I should take more time on the GOTMs because I have to sit a wait for the next one. Anxious to see how everyone else did.

I just noticed something disturbing.. this topic has a VERY high view to post ratio, some 219 to 10. Now, that's the largest on the site at this moment.. it seems people are looking at this topic and getting hints but not posting (because they haven't played it yet?)
Sorry if this seems a bit off-topic, but I think it needs to be mentioned.

Duke

I am checking this thread whenever I see a new post but have not posted up to now. (I was killed early by celts and am not submitting.)

My play is not so great. My highest score ever was 369% at Prince. I am playing GOTM7 for experience and find the spoilers challenging. You mates are writing about doing things I didn't think were possible.

Your posts don't usually include enough to duplicate but give me something to shoot for.

BTW My restarted civs are different than some mentioned. I don't have French (yet), Persions are in America.

Good luck and keep those posts coming.

It's 800 A.D., I control Europe (except for Scandinavia) and am building up in Africa (empty) and Middle-East (one Viking city). I have all wonders available and will start killing of the Vikings and Asia.

It's 1100 A.D., Europe including Scandinavia is mine, just as Africa, North-Sout and Western Asia and North-America. Next goal: total anihilation of Chinese and Mongols!!!! Mwahahahahahaha!

Damn that re-appearing ****! I have killed the blue guys 5 times now! And the yellow 2 times!

It's 1500 AD and I rule Europe, South America, Austriala, I have 5 cities in North America and are at war with the Russians in North America. I have 7 cities in Asia...and are at war with the Mongols. The Babylonians are to the south....probably North Africa and the Middle East and Asia to India. The Persians must be in South Africa, because they are attacking the Babylonians from the south. The Aztecs and the Germans are newly born.
wink.gif
So I have no idea where they are. I think I can conqure this game!!!! MUHAHAHHHAAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

Well this is my first post and first game of the month. Unfortunately i forgot to save at 1 AD, so saved at 280AD - hope they arent too strict about this, i've spent far too much time on this game...

Dealing with Celts, well, built barracks in London and York (giving the Celts whatever they asked for in the meantime - they were going to die so what did it matter) then built about 5 horsemen and kicked them. Then got myself a trireme together and took them all to Europe - and i needed them - the Spanish were EVERYWHERE, cities from Spain right over in to China. Didnt get Hanging Gardens which was a new experience for me, and a pain in the bum - found having the Great Wall invaluable though. Great Library was a waste of resources - didnt get one tech.

Its 1870, all of Asia is mine and Europe. Have East coast and middle of N America. Wiped out Celts, Vikings, Babylonians and Spanish. Approx 100 cities, and its at the stage of game I find really testing - my patience mainly.

New to this so is it better to finish early or have massive number of cities and score? Because I dont research at full capacity as I like to make money to buy my developments and bribe enemy cities. (Only taken capitals by force - every other city bribed)

Ill try and get the game finished tomorrow...

Stay Hoopy

Zaphod

p.s. how do i choose the funky Civ icons next to my post?

Well, this is my first time checking out this thread because I figure I've played enough to not have anything spoiled. I'm pre-1000AD.

I made friends with the Celts after they came at me with a chariot. I built 2 cities and went to colonize mainland Europe about the same time as the Celts. My map is starting to look crazy because I have a one city thick line of cities stretching into Asia. The Celts are right below me and have been allied with me nearly the whole game. The Vikings have the North and the Spanish the South. Nobody is particularly powerful.

The Mongols quickly killed off the Babylonians and the Persians. I don't know how since most of their cities I've found were defended by a warriors. The Babylonians became the Zulus and started in N. America (found out when I colonized across into Alaska). I was going to go to Australia but went for N. America instead and I think it was a mistake.

The Persians became the Americans and started off in S. Africa (right when I was starting to colonize there). They have become quite powerful and are fighting the Mongols back.

I've been at war with the Vikings and Spanish most of the game and haven't been able to gain a clear advantage. The Celts keep the Spanish at bay so I might keep them around as long as they keep liking me. Right now I'm the most powerful and the largest civ which bodes well for victory.

I've actually played on the world map as the English with the Celts as an AI. I've also played quite a few games where I've started off on a small island. Just after I settled London and sent the second settlers up to found York, a Celtic chariot appeared, so I realised this was the surprise.
eek.gif

I always go straight for Monarchy and never trade tecnology before I get it, unless on a small island, when I get Map Making ASAP. I made two phalanxes, another two settlers and a trireme and settled Western Europe as quickly as I could. There weren't any huts left, so I knew someone was around. In this case, I stake out territory with phalanxes, then settle it. This kept the Spanish in the south of Europe. I just expanded east.
rotfl.gif

It's now 700AD. I've got Railroad, > 50 cities and control all of Eurasia. I've got colonies in Africa, east US and northern South America.
There is a lot of luck here: the Spanish and the Babylonians kept each other pinned down, as did the Mongols and Chinese. I killed the Vikings and Celts.

This is a bit of a problem with the AI on lower levels: the AI civilizations will stop expanding for a long time when they run into the slightest obstacles.

I've been checking this thread alot with out posting anything. I got killed by the Celts in a few turns (and did submit). I restarted and lost interest around 1700 AD. The one interesting thing in my restart was colonizing North America after I had railroad: build a city, send out the engineers to build a railroad west, build another city, extend the railraod west, etc. It was almost like building the Union Pacific!
smile.gif

Of course I learned from my first try at this GOTM to give the Celts what they want until I build my strength!
