I see the results for GOTM 7 are posted, congratulations are in order for all who participated last month!

Hey, it looks like some folks have really got a handle on the GOTM score! Cactus Pete, Smash, Noughmaster, and myself all squeezed out GOTM scores that would have won any of the GOTMs in recent history. And all the 100+ GOTM scores would historically be in contention for a medal! So I shudder to think what things will look like in GOTM 8 (with a "Warlord" difficulty level) this month... My new bet is maybe for a few scores in excess of 300, though I haven't personally been able to get started on GOTM 8 yet!

Sooo.... After looking at a few of the end-game saves, my nominations for some awards are as follows:

- The "Most entertaining city names" award would be Smash:

- How about "Most geographically correct city names" for Kev's "Atlas in a GOTM"

- The "North Pole Is Fully Colonized" Award (an award one that Starlifter often contends for, but not this time! ;) ) would be Cactus Pete:

- The "Holy Crap, a freight system can't run with those city names" award goes to Noughmaster! (about 16 GULags 14 ICE-stations... gotta have unique, orderly 1st three letters to rapidly send freight flying!)

- The "Most densely packed cities" nomination would be Sulla, for that urban sprawl around Stalingrad!

- The "Most Airports & Airfields" would likely go to Starlifter, whose excuse is he's a pilot anyway and probably flew into all those places

- The "Help! My Paratrooper is stuck in Madagascar and can't get back!" award is definitely Contact!

LOL, any other nominations this month?

LOL, I'll add one more nomination :) ... a "double" award for Richard:

- the "Luckiest Trireme of GOTM 7" the brave trireme that plowed straight across the North Atlantic (for at least 4 consecutive turns away from shore) in about 2000 BC without foundering:

- the "Elephant with the best sense of Smell" for the Elephant in South America that "smelled" the last AI city from North America and then across the Andes mountains and knew just exactly where to hop off the ship for the kill ;).

I am humbled to be included in your award ceremony, Starlifter. Actually I was getting desperate to dump my engineers into any open spot while my ship was in route to AC. I hadn't thought how funny it looked until I saw your snap shot. Now I'm kind of embarrassed.

BTW your GOTM7 score is incredible. Congrats! I had to go out of town at the end of August so I didn't have time to properly grow my cities (and score) to their full potential, but even then I don't think I could have beaten your score much less the time. Truely awesome.

Thanks so much for all your posts. Even though I don't post often, I do read most of your posts to improve my technique.

No need for embarrassment!!! In fact, the SMART thing to do in the last turn or two before conquest of SS landing is to make cities with all your engineers (settlers?!). Join any extras to existing cities of less than size 8, and it will increase the final score by one or two points! With 100 engineers, this could be worth as much as 200 points, though probably more like 150.

Actually, I hope anyone is not embarrassed, which was not my intent. If anyone (even Richard, who I kinda dogged a little, LOL), would like their "nomination" removed, just let me know and I'll edit it out ;) .

It's probably a good idea for folks to download the save games and have a look at some various techniques. And that's a great time to notice some potential "nominees" for various wacky stuff.
BTW your GOTM7 score is incredible.
To be honest, it suprised me because I "normally" aime for the 1700's or 1800's for a SS. Cutting my game short, launching a SS, and growing as much as possible while it was enroute did give a high GOTM score, mainly due to the 50^PNP factor. The results have made me rethink a few things about my normally slow (late centuries) but massive end-game methods for the GOTMs. Maybe less massive and more speed is the ticket, LOL...

That's the good thing about the GOTM! And why I make such long detailed posts... in a couple GOTMs, I expect (hope) the bulk of the GOTM participants' scores will be clustered near the top end of the results each month. But "real time" is often a limiting factor as much as "skill", I think.

Good job Starlifter. Maybe we can make it a GOTM tradition to give out weird awards like the ones you listed?

Having played Richard at multiplayer I would be VERY surprised if anything but luck accounted for his finding that last A.I! His conduct in his multiplayer game with me (that I won...but it could have gone VERY differently if I hadn't provoked war when I did) was exemplary and hadn't any hint of cheating.

Furthermore his trireme voyage is something he does...I don't recommend it especially as on world.mp there is a VERY easy trireme route that is completely safe. You head to iceland, greenland, then northern canada then move down the N.American coast...

if you have MGE you can use the end turn keyboard shortcut and triremes will never sink. The same cheat used for aircraft and missiles.

Since folks seem to enjoy them :) , we'll do it! And remember, anyone may feel free to contribute one of these informal "awards" :goodjob:.

LOL, I did not know that! I have MGE myself, but normally minimize my naval endeavors during the Trireme era, since the Trireme is so vulnerable. Anytime I venture from shore, my Trireme seems sure to sink, ergo mine are shore-huggers! You used the term "cheat", so I assume that most people probably do not approve of this technique.

:) That is the exact route that I used in the trireme era in GOTM 7! Slower by a day or two, but guaranteed survival of the triremes .

by Hell-Raiser:

I love those Awards!!! you should to those more times!!!
It looks like we will continue to do these after the GOTM results are released each month, since people enjoy them!

:)

You obviously haven't seen my list of cheats and tricks in the CivII Strategy forum then.

In that thread I even try to find out what is 'officially' allowed in GOTM, but it didn't get much response so I'm not sure if people are all that sure what is allowed in GOTM or not.

it probably shouldn't be allowed as there is no such keyboard shortcut in original or classic civ2.
..but there is no way to say that it was used.Triremes can navigate open waters. Its just a matter of chance.IIRC it is 1 in 16.1 in 8 after Seafaring and 1 in 4 after Navigation.

but beware in mp...you may think your island is unreachable....

ok I check the manual and it says 50% chance of sinking.25% after Seafaring and 1 in 8 after Navigation.

so
4 times out of 8 it will sink
Seafaring>2 times out of 8
Navigation>1 time in 8

About those cheats: it's the same old it's unallowed but we cannot check it problem. Any cheats that are actually bugs in the game are unallowed. That would also disallow the airfield-on-hill-cheat, but since everyone is doing that it was automatically made allowed.

But in principle, these cheats are disallowed.

And Duke, I haven't seen that thread yet. Perhaps I'll take a look later on...

Well the thing about the airfields that made that bug so special is that you would normally build the aiurfields on hills to get the defense bonus to your unites - and it would be very hard to look through all the games and see which airfields were build for food and which were build for tactical reasons.

It's easy enough to see it in my games - as I never build air unites - so all the airfields in my games are build for food gain - but since I don't like the look af things i NEVER EVER build airfields anywhere but on hills - I hate seeing people using them as a short-cut on regular terrain....... I always build road/railroad and irrigation/farmland on all the non hill/mountain squares

Thanks for the link, Duke. BTW, from the link, my initial thoughts would be that #4 (Unsinkable Triremes, uncrashable planes) and #10 (the FCT) should be expressly forbidden in GOTMs. In fact, I just learned from Smash (in this very thread) that Triremes can use a trick to keep them from sinking while away from land. Evidently, this is a "double unfair" cheat because Smash said only Civ II MGE could do it (I've yet to actually try it, however... and won't be using it in any event).

Speaking as a big-time proponent of Stealth fighters and of building Airfields (for all reasons, including food)... I would personally be more than willing to agree to a restricted use of airfields, though I think all that was debated elsewhere before I joined CFC and it was decided that airfields should go forth and multiply.

I'll refrain from more comments about Duke's thread, since this thread is on a different topic and I don't wanna confuse people who might look for it.

The end turn keyboard shortcut is actually a scenario making tool and that is why there is no such shortcut in classic. It should not be available until "toggle scenario menu" is on...but it is..oh well.

There was no real easy way to say which airbase is for legitimate uses and which weren't and, more importantly,it takes alot of time and effort to check. They sure do make a map look ugly.Hundreds of little "anarchy" symbols covering the world.

At least in Civ II MGE, there is no defense bonus for a unit defending on an airfield. There is a bonus for defending in a fortress, though.

Many people may not realize something about airfields: units defend one at a time from an airfield. They get no bonus, but like a Fortress, they defend one at a time. For example, if you put 5 warriors on an airfield and attack with a Stealth Bomber or cruise missile, one warrior will be killed, and 4 will be left. You do get the terrain bonus (if any) when defending an airfield, however.

... I always build road/railroad and irrigation/farmland on all the non hill/mountain squares

Some people may not know that the Railroad trade bounuses are not symmetrical, and if you build solid RR's, you are assured of the Road/RR trade delivery bonus, as well as the per-turn bonus.

With airfields, you do NOT get the bounuses (unless, of course, you have the RR/road in addition to the airfield). So if trade routes are important on your continent, airfields are not a shortcut (even though they will allow the zero cost for movement).

In short, airfields are not a cure-all, but they are pretty helpful for quick and dirty expansion in late game when Democratic cities are chomping the food faster than it can be produced :goodjob: .
