Amazon ad?

Just today, I've noticed a problem when I enter the civfanatics.com main page. It first loads up the page (with the usual pop-up which gets blocked by my pop-up blocker). But then, the page advances on its own to an Amazon.com web page, shown here:

I ran Adaware, removed all identified processes, but the problem persists. I don't know if this is something specifically with this computer, or if this has been happening to others as well.

It has happened to me several times as well. I wasn't sure what the problem is.

It only happens when I use the address bar pull down for CivFanatics; and only occasionally. It doesn't happen if I manually type civfanatics.com in the address bar.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home.html/002-8267609-9609642
is the address that shows after it redirects to Amazon from CFC.

Interesting, Kring. I still get it whether I type the address in, follow a link, or scroll the address (which is what I do most often). It sometimes takes as long as 10 seconds before the page gets forwarded.

I will try it from a different location, as well as trying from home several different ways since it only happens sometimes, and not every time.

On a side note, I don't always use a pop up blocker, so I will try it with and without the different popup blockers I have installed to see if that makes a difference. On that same note, I don't always get a popup type ad on the main CFC page when I am not using any popup blocker.

No problem on my computer also...

Those amazon ads at the bottom of the page use iframe technology... Could it be that the browser you use can't handle iframe very well?

PS: People really should use the mad smily less often. ;) I see 5 mad smilies on page 1 of this Site Feedback forum alone.

People are very angry...I use it semi-often. ;)

I've never gotten that...

Currently using IE 6; also was using IE 6 at home. I get it both places. I will experiment some with Opera and Netscape when I get back home.

Additional feedback. I get it with either typing in civfanatics.com or using the address bar pull down, but only the first time I go to the main page in a window. If I have multiple windows open, then the first time I go to the main page in each window, I get switched to Amazon. Subsequent trips back to the main page don't get the switch, even if the Amazon ad is at the bottom of the page in the subsequent trips.

Tried a couple of times with Opera and Netscape: goes to CFC main page without a problem. Machines used include Windows XP Pro, XP Home, and Windows 2000 OS.

Interesting additional note, Apolyton has a similar Amazon ad, and I get the same problem going to Apolyton's main page.

Edit: further experimentation has revealed that it only happens the first time in a new window for either Apolyton or CFC's main page. If I go to one, then the other, only the first one (either CFC or Apolyton) I go to gets redirected to Amazon.com.

Edit 2: Being signed into/not signed into Amazon didn't change the redirect.

 That's exactly what I thought! It doesn't help to have two 'mad' smilie options in the message icon menu. ;)

Maybe I was being melodramatic. Perhaps we need a smilie that says 'peeved,' kind of like Chieftess' -_- during chat.

I have updated adaware, spybot search and destroy as well as my AV program; then ran all 3 on both computers. No spyware was found, and the computers are virus free. And, still, I get the redirect to Amazon.com.

hehe, it falls under the class of "Veera Smileys" (the ^_^, -_-, O_O, >_< ones).

anyway, regarding the topic, I haven't seen the Amazon.com ad.

I have removed the amazon ad from the bottom of the main page. Let me know if you continue to have redirect problem…

I am no longer being forwarded to the Amazon page. I still have the same pop-up blocker, so I suspect it has to do with their ad. :goodjob:
