After playing solo for so long it would be real nice to play with the abundance of Civ3 talent that is present in this forum. So I am proposing this succession game.

Emperor difficulty.
Civ - Any civ will do as long as it is militaristic
Map - Large or Huge.
PTW version. latest patch.

Everything else Random.

I will like to drive for Domination or COnquest but I am open to other victory conditions if the majority of the players involved want it.

The real motivation for this game is to learn from each other's playing styles. I have seen that every player gets tied to his/her favorite strategy which is probably not the best way of playing. The good player can adapt and be flexible in their strategy. So hopefully, this game will benefit all of us.

I think 6 players including me should be enough. Anybody who has a decent shot at winning emperor is welcome to join.

Looking forward to playing with you guys.

@earp. Great. We will wait for others to join. We will start with whoever is on board within 24 hours. If we do not have 6 people by then we will leave the game open till we have 6.

Let's pick any militaristic civ. I would say let the other trait be religious. Then we can switch in and out of monarchy to control war weariness. And if we get intervals of peace we can easily switch to a more productive goverment like republic or even democracy when it becomes available. What do you think?

Sounds good to me. I think the mil/rel civs are the Celts, Aztecs, and Japanese. Any of the three are fine with me.

My order of preference would be:
1. Japan
2. Celts
3. Aztecs

Then Japan it will be. I am not a great fan of Samurai but it will do. Since it attacks and defends as well, after chivalry and before MT we need not build any other unit. Just Samurais galore.

I just have time to start a new game before going to work. So here it is.

This the first start that came up. It is not that bad. I see a wheat and it is on a river. And bonus grasslands. We have to move one tile though. So that is one turn wasted.

You can play the first turns if you want.

The strategy that I usually follow in such cases is to go for Pottery full speed so that we can get a granary in the capital and turn it into a settler factory.

The first and the second ring of cities are the ones that makes military units apart from one. One of them should be worker factory.

But as I mentioned in the first post one of our objectives is to learn from each other styles. So let me know what you intend to do and we can discuss the pros and cons of our approach.

I'm at work also. I won't be able to play until this evening. I'll look at the save when I get home and then post what I think we should do.

It looks like a pretty good start location. I think we should move the settler NW to the forest and start the worker irrigating the wheat. I agree with going for pottery at 100%. I usually try to build a granary before my first settler.

Does anyone else want to join our Japanese warfest?

If you want to start go ahead and start. If other people want to join they are always welcome to jump in.

Turn 1 -- 4000 BC
Move settler to the NW.
Worker starts irrigating wheat.

Turn 2 -- 3950 BC
Kyoto founded. Set research to pottery at max science. 0.10.0 Due in 20 turns. Production set to warrior. Due in 10 turns

Turn 3 -- 3900 BC
zzzz

Turn 4 -- 3850 BC
zzzz

Turn 5 -- 3800 BC
Irrigation finished. Begin road.

Turn 6 -- 3750 BC
zzzz

Turn 7 -- 3700 BC
Growth in one turn. Move citizen to BG to gain shield. We would have two extra food if we work the wheat this turn.

Turn 8 -- 3650 BC
Kyoto grows to size 2. Adjust slider to spend 1 gold to entertain new citizen.
New citizen works forest so that we will have enough shields to build a warrior next turn.
Worker finishes road. Border expands in four turns. Decide to move worker to BG next to river to mine. This BG will be within our border by the time the mine is built and will gain 1 extra gold because it is next to the river.

Turn 9 -- 3600 BC
Warrior is built. We have a hut along our southwestern border. It will be "poped" when our border expands. Rvier to the southeast begins at the mountain. River to the northwest probably goes to the sea. We are on the north part of the map. Decide to send the warrior to explore south.

Turn 10 -- 3550 BC
Decide to end the turn without moving the warrior. You can decide if you want him to move him to the mountain or explore south. I'd probably move him towards the mountain.
Looking at the space race. Our opponents are the French, Spanish, Germans, Vikings, Americans, Celts, Ottomans, Romans, Arabs, English, and Iriquois.

Overall, a kind of slow turn.

3550 Bc: View state of empire. Nothing much to view really. Warrior moved towards hill.

3550 Bc. Warrior moves on to hill. More BG seen.

3450 Bc: Kyoto's culture expands. Hut Pops. It is deserted :( Warrior moves south. We see a horse just south west of Kyoto.

3400 Bc: Warroir completes in Kyoto. Production set to another warrior. Pottery in 6. Fortified as military police. Kyoto to expand next turn. Lux dropped for this turn. Scout warrior moves south and sess a cow.

3350 Bc. Kyoto expands. Worked tiles reaaraged to grow in 5, complete warrior in 2. grow in 2. Scout moves south.

3300 Bc: Worker completes mine. Asked to build road in the same tile. Scout moves and see hut.

3250 Bc: Second warrior built. Asked to go east for scouting. Kyoto to build another warrior in 3, and to grow again in 3. Now to pop the hut or not? Decide not to pop. Warrior moves south west.

3200 BC: Warrior scout movement. Nothing else.

3150 BC: Second scout sees fish and wheat. Worked moved to BG tile. Pottery in 1.

3100 BC; Pottery discovered. Set to Broze working in 40 turns. Worker starts irrigating the tile. Warrior formed in Kyoto. Granary in 10. This should be rushed when there in one shield in the box. We are making 6 gold per turn now. I think I already did a :pimp: I have moved the worker to the wrong tile. Warrior scout moves.

Keys to the empire handed to earp.

interturn
Stop worker from irrigating. Irrigating grasslands does not give you extra food while in Despotism. In Despotism, grasslands and bonus grasslands should be mined and plains should be irrigated. Cracker wrote a really good article on opening moves, evaluating terrain, and the sequence that tiles should be improved. Improving Your Opening Play Skills Also, you should generally improve tiles along rivers first because they give you an extra gold each turn.

1 3050 BC
worker starts to mine BG
warriors explore

2 3000 BC
An iriquois conscript warrior shows up on mountain next to southern warrior. We are both standing next to a goody hut. I decide to take a chance and pop it. It spews barbs. :(
Iriquois have 35 gold, WC, Myst, and two cities. They do not have the wheel. I usually avoid trading a tech that gets a rival closer to their UU, but I decide to see what they will offer us for the wheel. It seems like it should be pretty valuable to them. They will give us WC+35g or Myst+2g. I can not work anything out for both WC and Myst. I decide to trade for Myst. This will allow us to research polytheism which I usually have good success trading with the AI. After some thought, I change research to poly. We have only made two turns progress on BW. I think we will be able to buy or trade for BW before the 40 turns would be up.

IT Iriquois warrior attacks a barb, redlines, and wins. One barb moves to a mountain. The last barb attacks us, we lose one hp, but win.

3 2950 BC
exploring... flood plains to south and horses to the east

4 2900 BC
exploring...

5 2850 BC
exploring...
move citizen to forest so we do not waste food when we grow. I wonder if I should have slowed growth so we build the granary before growing.

6 2800 BC
exploring... Find iriquois border to the east.

7 2750 BC
Kyoto grows. Increase slider to make new citizen happy.
worker finishes mine. Begins to road.
We have 56 gold. I decide to move one of the two warriors out of the caoital to explore a little more around the capital. Increase the slider again. We are now at 6.1.3.

8 2710 BC
granary due next turn. MM to gain an extra food this turn.

9 2670 BC
Kyoto granary-->settler

10 2630 BC
Worker finishes road. Move worker to next BG that needs mining.

I think the best location for the next town is on the forest next to the wheat to the north.

Read Cracker's article. That was good learning. I will probably play tonight and post.

2590BC: Worker starts to build road on the tile he is on. Warrior movement.

2550 BC: Warrior movment. Hut popped. Empty. Settler created. Sent NW. Production changed to warrior.

2510 BC: Scout Warrior movement.

2470 BC: Worker start mine. Warrior movment. Sees Orange border.

2430 BC: Warrior completes in Kyoto. CHanged to settler in 5. Scout warrior movment.

2390 BC: Settler moved to coast. We see fish. SHould be able to catch it when border expands. No way to get both fish and wheat at the same time now. Contact made with English. They have BW, Masonry, Alphabet and WC. Iroquois have all of these except Alphabet. So we buy Alphabet off English for 80G, Mysticism and 1 Gold/turn. Sell this to Iroquois for Masonry, BW and 31 G. Thus net result is Alphabet, Masonry and BW for Mysticism, 59 G and 1 gold/turn. I would say not bad, but let me know if this could have been any better.

2350 BC: Osaka formed. Citizen works on wheat. Grow in 7. Production set to warrior. Warrior comes out of english territory. Will rest for one turn next

2310 BC: Warrior movement.

2270 BC: Settler completes in Kyoto.

I played one turn less, since I want you to make the decision on the next city placerment. I think we should go for the spot next to the hill to our south east. It has water. But it is upto you.
