I was playing my mod and realised something was missing :(

Basically, I was hoping for an old petrol car (ford or something) with a driver and a rifleman passenger. Simple: An improvised military car. Sound cool? :)

I have an old book here that's dedicated to armoured cars, it's a shame I cannot share the photos today, there are no useful diagrams but I will try to scan something tommorow.

This is a drawing of the French Hotchkiss armoured car of 1909. It was exported to Turkey and would fit the role.

All these vehicles predate tanks, and were used as wheeled scouts or sometimes as light artilery. They weren't very good off-road.

The Hotchkiss' gun on the back was mounted in an unshielded turret. IMHO, this car looks better from the front.

The Panhard Genty (1905) might make a better unit as it has no turret and just looks more like an improvised vehicle. Sadly, I could find no images online :(

---

The Charron Girardot et Voigt (1903) was the first French fully Armoured Car.

The following drawing is not it - I suspect it's a later model based on the same design. I have a small photo infront of me. While the drawing's shape and dimensions are more or less accurate (clearly looks like the same vehicle) - the actual pieces of metal (and overall finish) are all wrong :(

I think the original varient looks nicer.

Check out --

Click on WWI in the lefthand frame, then click on the small b/w pix for much larger color renditions.

Also scrolling down the left frame allows you to check out a nice overview of practically every country's AFVs since their beginning.

That's a very good site :)

I couldn't find any pre-WW1 vehicles listed. I was really looking for the "missing link" between cars and armoured vehicles.

I use Kinboat's Italian Lancia car as the Armored Car in my mod. It's pretty generic looking:

The Lancia IZM (page 17) looks good.

If I had known, or if search worked, I might not have started this thread but does that unit have civ specific colours?

Lancia IZM date to 1915 - just for the record.

Yeah the blue line around the turret and the blue on the wheels are civ-specific. Although I think there is still a place for an earlier car... Something like your first picture, a normal car with a rifleman or early machine gun mount, not really the turret that the Lancia has.

This is a different view of the first car I mentioned, the Hotchkiss 1909. Check out the windy-thing at the front :p

The drivers look a little like the Civ3 riflemen... kinda.

Interestingly, perhaps useful for a fidget, hand signals and flags were used for inter-communication. Tank radios didn't appear until 1930.

The other two vehicles I gave mention to.

These vehicles look just absolutely great - I like them all, and it would be just fantastic if someone makes them. There are allready some WWI vehicles out, but these would be so cool.

Hmm... I may have to try to make one of these after I finish at least my matilda.

I do prefer the image I scanned, but here is another photo I found online. It appears to be a cut-down varient of the Hotchkiss 1909.

Large image. Click here

I'm glad the gap in weapons is recieving some interest!

I would make models but I'm still stuck trying to do the relatively simple Avro Vulcan cold war tactical nuclear bomber

Any takers? :P

They do. I see the "Marne taxis" coming in too (transport but no real MG though)...

I would also like to see a generic Motorcyle Scout:

Were there only three types of Tanks in WWI?

The Mark I, the A7V and the Renault?

ww1.jpg

The English had Mk I to V, then the "Whippet".
France had the Schneider, the St Chamon and the FT 17.
The German only the AV7 (it appeared the 21st of march 1918).

The Allied badly outnumbered the German : 6000 against 20 at the end of the war, according to a German expert.

The other countries didn't used tanks before the end of the war.

Where would these fit in the tech tree?

I meen I know were the WW1 units would go but how about the pre war stuff?

If you like my model let me know and I will finish it (im getting tired of tanks for a while).

So here you go an armored car:
