Wow, it's the 8th of the month, and no one has yet started a spoiler thread? :confused: Maybe the summer weather has some of us out and about, instead of where we belong? :D

Well, I am playing my first GOTM since XXVI, and I am kicking some butt and taking some cities in the process. Granted, I have had a great deal of luck.

Both of my immediate neighbors, the Greeks and the Celts, managed to lose their capitals to Barbarians :eek: . When I discovered this (at the time I established by Hellenic embassy), I promptly built diplomats and bought the rest of the cities they had settled in around all of those terrific rivers!

The Celts relocated their capital to Carmarthen, then built HG and MPE there. That was sufficient motivation to target the capture of that city in our war. Mission accomplished! I have also built Colossus and Copernicus on my own.

At the moment (1670AD), I have 26 cities and my next largest competitor has 5! That would be the Babylonians, however, and I have seen their ability to build a solid infrastructure before! They have Pyramids. I think that it is time for a transcontinental invasion.

Whoa, the restarts are on! :cool: After assimilating :borg: the Greeks, the Carthaginians entered the game on a small northern island. Looks like a good trading partner/pet civ!

At the moment, I am building Mike's and JSBach, researching Economics. Babylonians have this advance already :mad: , trying to rush it and am pre-building another wonder and several food caravans.

I started, and was soon beset by a loud ARGH (my own) as I discovered that my capital was one space away from a rather nice SSC location. (If it were the ‘optimal’ spot I might have tried an OCC for this game). ARGH #2 came when the Greeks wanted monarchy & I refused -- so we’ve been at war for an extended period of time. My bad, in that I thought (since I had view of Sparta) that it would be a quick & painless activity -- nope they’ve been sending so many units my way that I took the time to research WC to get some sort of offense to equalize the arena. They’ve offered a cease fire a couple of times -- maybe I’ll accept it next time. I think that it would be good if they went & pounded on someone else for a while.

I’m at 800 AD, have a few Wonders, the most cities, but not the most population, so I guess that it is time to shift into second gear.
 
Damn, I didn't know that in the GOTM speed counts, I took my time to research Future Technology 50 before ending the game :crazyeye:
 
I think I switched to Democracy when some will be landing their SS:eek:.Just lack of focus and planning.
Bloody paradise of a starting area.Chased the white civ around destroying them several times.Got their 1 settler cornered now.

Very bad reputation is making the remaining AIs less than cooperative as research partners.
 
I had the Celts as allies for the whole game. They came in very useful researching many techs for me and keeping other civs away. They killed the orange civ 3 times in the first couple of dozen turns. They were the nearest civ to me in size - even though they only had 5 cities. They were the last civ left, but I could easily have wiped them out centuries before had it not been for the 'only win by SS' rule. I decided the leave them be so I didn't have to wage a war whilst I was trying to build my SS as quickly as possible.
 
I managed to get 3 advanced tribes and 1 nomad with only 1 barbarian horde showing up from popping huts. Also the Barbarians and Germans combined to wipe out the Babylonia leaving some cities for easy pickings early on.
I used the early advanced tribes as an base to wip out the Celts and Greeks.
By 1 ad i could wipe out all but the Zulu (no roads to their location) with a bit of an effort. My goal is to hold the AI's to just there Capital and to wipe them out if they attack me. (all but one of course) Question are we all being too much of a pacifist? I suspect someone will wipe out all but one civ ASAP.
 
Very slow start, with a number of hard battles fought by Indian mighty warriors against barb archers. Better endgame leading to a landing in the late seventies.
(how many players landing before 1800?... let us wait and see ;) ).
 
I'm interested in how many turns between building Apollo and landing on Alpha Centuri without giving away actual landing dates yet.

In my case it took 36 years to land 10K colonists
 
I had a ncie game earliier on i was the Indians starting out and the celts started right next to me so the 1 thing to do is take them out befor they take my land ( Island Map ) So i mad units prepared and fast made the great wall for a little D and attacked straight threw to thier capital and sucessfully took it over now i am leading now with 12 cities the next largest is the Greeks with 5 cities. I know it is not good to say this but the game is in the bag for me.
 
I’m in the late late 1700’s with 65 techs so far & have yet to really fight anyone. Had a new experience however. Counted the beakers & had the tech advance before the city working Darwin’s completed it -- picked up Machine Tools, then Refining & Mini. :D

It’s just about time to go visit the neighbors…

I had hopes for a good EL game with this one, but am disappointed. Looks like the Greeks and Celts have sworn eternal emnity, as well as the Germans and Babs. Their tech lists were appallingly short when I got Marco Polo. I had to give several of them CerBur, Myst, Write, and Rep to get them to settle down a bit. Unfortunately, I could not pry Mas or Cst out of the Germans greedy hands, and no one had gotten Wheel yet, so I'm very behind in shooting for Sanitation. My SSC is going to have to wait at 12 for a while. The pre-Republic time was nice for some tribute, on the other hand.

The way this is going, with little AI research help due to neighbor wars, I doubt a pre-1500 landing is doable.

I almost forgot about this game. Hopefully it's close enough to the end of the month to post my landing date. I had a crazy-good SSC city because of a direct rail connection to the city of Thermopylae giving 3 routes as high as +45 (over 2100 beakers/turn possible when I completed the Research lab), but the timing was just never right and I couldn't tech-gift to reduce my requirements so it didn't help me shave off much time. I very rarely could get one turn techs. What it did was allow me to accumulate a TON of cash.

I did some hut hunting and cut down trees before founding my city, and I worked too many forests early on, so I got a late start as well.

I was never really at risk but I had a nasty little war to contend with once the ship had left the planet. I've never seen such a diplomatic barrage like the one I got from the Celts, while the greeks were fighting a conventional war at the same time. It actually starved my city and cost me two citizens (I was able to get one back at the end).

Because the AI civs were sharing the same continent they were often at war with each other, which prevented them from developing much useful tech for an early spaceship launch. My benchmark is 70 techs; I think I had 75 in this game when I hit Fusion. By getting Marco Polo and gifting tech I am often able to skip Horse, Masonry, Pottery, WarCode and one or two others. No go this time.

There is something we have not figured out correctly about using a Station City when the map does not wrap around. My Trade Routes to the German cities should have had the RR bonus but they did not, while those to the Celts did.

Previous experiences with Restarted Civs led me to believe I could get some easy tech trades by finding and gifting a restarted civ; in this game it did not work at all, perhaps due to the Militaristic nature of the Jap civ, perhaps due to the lousy terrain they got stuck with.

Building the Oracle is not a bad alternative to having to research several off-path techs to get Mikes and JSB. After I launched the Germans developed MonoTheism; I traded for it and built Mikes just to allow greater end-game celebrations. Oracle allowed me to keep my core cities at size 6 rather than 4, which helped a bit.

Payouts on caravan deliveries were pretty lousy, except from my SSC which had over 100 trade and a Station City.
