Thought I'd try to run a SG :) Sign up here if this sounds interesting. Have spot for one more.

Map:
-Custom made
-Standard size
-Almost no water
-Roaming barbarians
-7 preset opponents
-Deity
-All victory conditions (debatable)

Background
This is originally a map I made to test out RCP on, and as such it is very well suited for this strategy. The map is very symmetrical, and all start locations are identical. Resources are rather scarce though, but there is a nice collection of bonus resources around the start locations. Obviously, I am not suited to play on it myself, so I will merely watch :)

Recomennded dificulty level is Emperor or Diety, as the RCP layout favours humans who can use it to its full potential.

Have a start ready to go, as the Iroquis on Emperor, but can easily change it if folks want to do something else.

Start location:

Players
-Betazed
-Yndy
-Shevek
-TedJackson
-Free

First player takes 20 turns, next 2 takes 15, 10 from that?

I'll join. However, would it be ok with you to change barbs to anything apart from raging. IMHO, barbs are just a bother and do not really test any civ3 skill.

There are a few starting barb camps, but haven't really seen any new ones appear. They really aren't that bad, was worse when I had some more camps close in ;) Would get raided before you could build a warrior.

I'll play if its on Emperor and if the Barbs are lowered. I always play at Roaming, but I could play somewhere in between Roaming and Raging.

I'd play ...

... only if it's Deity. The map seems to be perfect for an overkill.

Did you adjust the optimal cities number to reflect increased number of land tiles?

Would really recommend Deity on it, it seems to be effectively one difficulty level easier.

OCN is not changed.

I would like to play but am rather worried about Deity as I have not yet managed a Deity win of my own. I have won some Emperor though and maybe it is time to have another go at Deity.

Please don't shoot me if this is a stupid question, but what means RCP??

I'd like to play if there's still a slot available.

Emperor or Deity is fine with me.

I'd really like to try RCP in an ideal environment :)

I'm thinking traits here:

If we're using the start posted at the top of the thread then an industrious civ might be a wise choice given the jungle to the South. All those rivers are crying out for commercial.

Standard size map seems to rule out expansionist.

Just my initial thoughts :)

My initial thoughts too would go for an industrious and commercial civ. IIRC, that would mean French or Carthage. Both have sucky UUs (defensive units where we will have to wait till attacked).

If we have to relinquish one trait I would let commercial go anytime. IMHO, industrious is far more beneficial.

Of the Industrious civs I like the Ottomans best (great UU) and being scientific gets that extra tech at the beginning of the age which for all practical purposes ropes in another tech thru trade (leading to almost two free techs in most cases). But I play Ottos very often. So I would not mind playing some other civ.

Chinese is also another favorite of mine (since I am a warmonger) and the Rider is also a decent UU.

Just my 2 cents :)

EDIT: I also see mucho jungle south and south-west of us. Without Industrious it would take eons to cut then down.

A couple questions and comments:

I'll be glad to go with Ottomans or China. I never get tired of playing with them, and I totally agree on the importance of Industrious.

Is RCP mandatory? Because I'm going to have to do a little reading up on it, but don't worry, I should do fine. :)

I will willingly play on Deity. I have played in one SG before on Deity, and we didn't do so bad. Granted, that one was full of Deity players, but with Yndy here we can do alright. :D

And finally, I will be absent on weekends (Saturday, Sunday) unless I specify otherwise. So just skip me on weekends unless I post that I'm going to be home. :)

Lets get this started! :mwaha:

Any industrious civ is perfectly fine with me. Industrious is the strongest trait IMHO so should serve us well on Deity.

Thanks Tarkeel for the RCP link. I have checked it out and it is intriguing. But I am not sure if such city placement can be achieved a 100%.

Looking forward to my first SG.

If we decide on RCP then we also need to decide how far the rings will be placed around the capital. According to the RCP thread each spread condition has its unique characteristics. {e.g. placing it at distance 6 would give two very nice rather uncorrupted rings around palace and FP. Packing them closer will have more productive cities around the palace and a relatively corrupted exterior.}

I have no experience in the different spread conditions. I almost always pack cities a little closer than OCP to maximize the tiles worked on. Maximizing tiles worked on will be very important in Deity.

However, it will be interesting to see what a different spread will lead to.

About RCP, have a look at the map before you decide... City sites are pretty obvious I'm afraid. As I stated, it was designed for RCP testing, and then expanded :)

I find that a temporary ring of 3 (IE, 2 squares N, S, E, W) are nice for inital production, but will discared later.. Main ring at distance 6, allows for 8 cities working 19 tiles.

Edit: I can't type today :(

Ottoman or China sound fine to me. I guess it depends on when we want to trigger our GA :)

We could have 2 rings around the palace. The first ring maybe at distance of 4 and a second at around 8.
That will give us max. of 8 cities in the first ring but up to 20 in the second.

Bilding 1 ring at 6 gives us far more cities with very low corruption but we would be wasting a lot of tiles that cannot be worked.
And also the walking distance between cities for units will be quite long. That might be a consideration in case of the AI attacking and we need to shuffle troops around quickly to defend hotspots.

I think I'd rather prefer a closer build like 4 or 4.5.
