As opposed to the other thead that talks about how to set production goals this thread is for the actual goals themselves.

I started the other thread because I thought it would do no good to talk about balancing production goals unless we have a mechanism to do so.
Nevertheless, here is a stake in the ground for a balanced approach for the next 2 weeks.

  • We have just the right amount of military, if it is used correctly. We should base our production of military units on specific needs, not because it's just something to do. This needs to be balanced with the military strategy -- if the line is not going to be withdrawn then maybe 1 spear per city, nothing more.
  • The popular choice of strategy is spaceship. We need to be the tech leader if we want to pursue this goal. The science-oriented buildings (library, university) need to be a priority in the cities which have low corruption.
  • In medium corruption areas, the first thing in the queue beyond maybe a defender should be courthouses. Rushing courthouses should be a possible consideration.

OK, now let's discuss this one :D

I do not think we should be building ANY military units right now. There is no need to do so. One problem we are facing right now is that we have many cities without a garrison. This situation has come about for two reasons. First, we have been building many cities this term. We have roughly double the amount of cities we had at the beginning of the term. Second, many units had to be pulled from our cities in our effort to form the Line and to block the Persians and Babylonians that landed in Esquiline. Our governors see their cities empty and think they must build garrisons. This is not so. As we fill our land with cities the need for these blocking mechanisms is reduced which will free many units for garrison duty. So, I say again to our governors, we do not need any more spearmen/pikemen!

I agree with President donsig. The legions we have now are of good rank and are just as worthy as any pikeman. With the reduction of available land for our nieghbors to squat on, the need for "the line" has diminished. We can take take the Legions of our Northern border and just place them on any open spaces.

I also agree with DS in regards to building Science improvements. This is very important, as we need to naturally gain in this department with every turn.

But we should not neglect building Marketplaces and Banks (when available), because we will need a natural flow of gold coming in with each turn also. In fact the gold can be more important to us than the improvements for Science, as a strong gpt income will not only expedite our research, but allow us to keep the Science Rate up at 70%. You might be saying that was a redundant statement, that th first part of the sentance means the same thing as the last part. But it can be looked at as two separate areas, especially in regards of the third factor - happiness.

Therefore, I strongly recommend that Cathedrals be built in all our larger cities immediately. With the Sistene Chapel coming up right around the corner, we need the benefits it can bring. :)

So, infrastructure is the key (IMHO), not military. We are already among the strongest militarily. Let's concentrate on the appropriate improvement in each city compared with our current and immediate future gold intake, but strive towards a Science lead.

I agree with those above. We need to build our infrastructure and improve the lands. This will allow us to be in a better position for whatever direction we may take in the future.

I think we should build libraries before temples. We can also build universities now and our metropolises should be doing that. We should also be looking into rushing some libraries.

In the rapidly-growing medium-corruption cities it is a close choice whether marketplaces or courthouses ought to come first.

I agree that temples should be fairly low-priority items now.

It was mentioned that legions don't upgrade but pikemen do ... very true ... with that in mind it might be nice to see a few (preferably veteran) pikemen coming out sometime soon. Or perhaps the time for that will be after the big cities finish their universities, after which there won't be immediate improvements needed, and the only uses for their shields will be defensive units and wonders.

i think we should build temples in all cities of the Quirinal province before anything else...

I think we should vary it a bit as far as the Quirnial build queues. Dyer and I think we should probably change production in Gingerbread City to a Courthouse. However, the main things produced in Quirnial should be temples.

As far as Quirnial province, I don't see the need for temples. We currently have luxuries and military police to keep the laborers content. All the cities in this province are small enough for the forseeable future to not require additional happiness improvements. I would rather see libraries built as the culture improvement. This also helps our science department. Then if happiness is going to be a forseeable problem, build a marketplace to leverage the luxeries we have and to help build the treasury.
